Premise: When the Sonics were sold following the 2005-06 season, the new owner, Clayton Bennett, stated repeatedly that the team would not relocate. That was when he believed the team was legally obligated to stay at least one more year. He had planned to move the team anyway, and stating he had no desire to relocate the team was merely a public stance, meant to keep Seattle fans' continued support of the team. But, when his lawyers informed him that the lease on Key Arena had a loophole, enabling the termination of the contract should the team be sold, he acted quickly. With the support of David Stern, who was eager to again try to sell the game to western Canadians, Mr. Bennett quickly secured a business partnership with the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, acquiring use and revenue shares from GM Place. In an unprecedented amount of time, the SuperSonics organization was now located in Vancouver, British Columbia. And Canada once again had two NBA franchises.

Coach Hill's remarks regarding the team needing time to mesh proved rather prophetic. The team's first game of the year was against the Portland Trailblazers. It was also their first home game of the season, and the first NBA game played in Vancouver April 14, 2001, the day of the final Grizzlies home game. None of that seemed to matter, as Vancouver came out tentative, Chris Wilcox injured his left hamstring, and Rashard Lewis got ejected with 2 technical fouls after logging only 16 minutes of playing time. The Sonics lost the first professional basketball game in Vancouver in over 5 years, 93-87.

NOV 3: VAN 104 - LAL 112

Two days later, the Sonics squared off against Kobe Bryant and Lakers in Los Angeles for their first nationally televised game of the season. In Canada, the Sonics have an exclusive broadcast deal with the CBC, who are airing NBA basketball for the first time. With Wilcox's left hamstring still bothering him, Andrea Bargnani starts in his place. Kobe Bryant would put on a phenomenal show, missing only one shot from inside the arc en route to his 37 points.

The Vancouver SuperSonics posted their first win of the season at home in a rematch against the Los Angeles Lakers, by a final score of 105-102. The main catalyst? Robert Swift! Beastin'! Check out that stat line - 34 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks. This could be a breakout game for Robert Swift in a breakout year. After 3 games he is leading the team in scoring and rebounding, with an Elton Brand-like 20 and 10, respectively. Kobe had another strong game, but he was simply outclassed by Swift's career game. Chris Wilcox remains hampered by his left hamstring injury, limiting him to 7 minutes.

Wow you traded away Rayy Allen :o Interesting roster now, but I think that Parker is too weak for the starting SG spot. Looking forward for good performance by Wilcox

NOV 07: VAN 102 - MIA 111

Following Vancouver's dramatic 3 point victory in a rematch against the Lakers for their first victory of the season, the team left for it's first road trip of the season, a 4 game stretch taking them through Florida, then up to face off against Atlanta and Charlotte, in a series of back-to-backs. The first stop is Miami, and the team's second nationally broadcast game. The Heat were unbeaten heading into their match-up with the Sonics, but the return of a healthy Chris Wilcox had the team buzzing with anticipation. Miami is still certainly the deeper team and heavily favored to win, but Rashard Lewis doesn't put any stock in odds.

"I like how we match-up against them, the Heat. I do. I think we can throw lots of different looks at them. We'll see who comes out on top."

Though Lewis had a reasonable game, aside from shooting the ball, he certainly didn't step it up as needed against the defending champs, fouling out in 29 minutes of playing time, and the Heat cruised to a 111-102 win. The game wasn't as close as the score would indicate, however. The Heat dominated from the tip, getting pretty much whatever they wanted on offense, and forcing Vancouver into contested jumpers on the other end. Were it not for a late rally by the Sonics, it may well have been 20 point victory for Miami.

The next day the Sonics played in Orlando, getting blown out 106-89. Dwight Howard showed Robert Swift he still has a few things to learn about the NBA, putting up 31 points and grabbing 9 offensive rebounds alone, 16 total. With Turkoglu and Nelson knocking down outside shots, the game was over by halftime. Chris Wilcox returned to the starting lineup for Vancouver following his strong showing against Miami, and posted a 15-13 double double.

Two days later the Sonics earned their second win of the season, first on the road, against the Charlotte Bobcats. Robert Swift bounced back from his poor showing in Orlando, and thoroughly dominated Emeka Okafor, going for 20 and 10, his 4th double-double of the season. Rashard Lewis topped 30 points for the first time this season, posting 32 in the win. Adam Morrison led the Bobcats with 18. The final score was 112-101. The next day, though, the Sonics lost again, this time to the surprising Atlanta Hawks, who, with the victory, improved to 5-1 on the young season, by a final score of 110-91. The loss prompted coach Hill to suggest in his post-game comments that Anthony Parker may be replaced in the starting lineup for the next game, due to his poor showing on the current road trip. Earl Watson rolled his left ankle in the third quarter, and did not return. The diagnosis is a mild sprain which should heal in about a week. He will be able to play through it, but his quickness will be limited.

The team also completed it's second trade with the Raptors so far this year, sending rookie center Saer Sene for power forward Kris Humphries. The Vancouver fans were not fond of this deal, feeling it was a lateral move that did nothing to make up for trading Ray Allen, which was a wildly unpopular trade to so far, with the team struggling to 2-5 start. General Manager Rick Sund had stated at the time of the deal that a large consideration was the new owners desire to move Ray Allen's $14 million dollar contract so that the team would have the cap space available to rebuild around Rashard Lewis. A poor seven game stretch is unlikely to alter that plan.

NOV 14: VAN 96 - PHI 87

Vancouver's next game was another televised match-up, this time at home against the 76ers. With Earl Watson still hampered by injury, Luke Ridnour is expected to handle most of the point guard duties. When asked about the situation before the game, Ridnour was excited about the possibility of playing the majority of the game.

"Of course I'm excited. It's a good opportunity to show coach what I can do with big minutes. I mean, obviously it's too bad Earl got hurt, and he's a really good player, but everyone wants to play as much as they can. I just want to go out there and help the team as much as I can, and hopefully that translates into more minutes later."

Ridnour's performance turned out to be quite good. In just under 30 minutes of playing time, he shot 7 for 12 from the field, making both of his shot from behind the arc, and scored 17 points. While he only recorded 3 assists, he still facilitated the offense quite smoothly, and made good decisions with the ball, not turning it over once. Joey Graham replaced Anthony Parker in the starting lineup, though he only played 9 minutes and shot 1 for 5 from the floor. As for the Sixers, they entered the game with only 1 win on the season, despite Andre Igoudala being second in league scoring with a 28.2 PPG average.

Shocking victory on the road! The Vancouver SuperSonics upset the Phoenix Suns 93-91, closing to within one game .500. This truly was a shocking win. No Sonic played well, except Swift and Watson, with Luke Ridnour even going 0 for 7 from the field, and having more turnovers than assists. Yet somehow, they managed to eke out the win by holding Phoenix to 14 3rd quarter points.

ImageImage

The Sonics then had another back-to-back set, at home against the Jazz on Friday, and then against the Warriors on Saturday in Oakland. Utah emerged victorious 94-86,due in large part to Andrei Kirilenko's near triple-double of 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists. Mehmet Okur led the Jazz in scoring with 27 points, while the Sonics were paced by Rashard Lewis' 24 point effort in the loss. Lewis again led the team in scoring the next day against Golden State, in a game Vancouver won by a final score of 89-86.

The Sonics had hoped to carry some momentum from their road victory over the Warriors to their next game, a home contest against New Jersey. Instead, New Jersey took control from the tip, and never looked back. They embarrassed the Sonics 102-87. Vince Carter dropped 39 points, and Jason Kidd notched a triple-double, his first of the season, with 11 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists. No Sonic scored in the 20's. Following this disappointing and disheartening loss, Sonics brass decided they needed some more back court help. Specifically, that the time share at point guard between Luke Ridnour and Earl Watson was not working out. Both players were shooting under 40% to this point in the season, and Earl Watson still had 4 years left on his contract, which paid him over $5 million dollars a year. So on November 22, with the team sitting at 5-7, Vancouver's roster was shaken up once again.

Image

Brevin Knight suited up for that night's game against the Clippers, and came off the bench to score 9 points, and hand out 10 assists. He also played a pivotal role in Vancouver's 4th quarter comeback, although they eventually lost the game 106-103, thanks to a Cuttino Mobley 3 pointer at the buzzer.

He's not that bad in real life. But yeah, I'm surprised at his dominance so far. He's young, too so hpefully he'll only get better. I wouldn't be surprised to see him play in the all-star game in this dynasty.

Thanks, by the way. I'm hoping to add some better video and other cooler things in the future. Stay tuned.

NOV 24: VAN 131 - SAC 124 (OT)

The Sonics played their first overtime game of the season, a televised game against the Sacramento Kings on November 24. After Mike Bibby tied the score at 111-111 on an old fashioned 3-point play with less than 5 seconds left on the clock, Anthony Parker missed a buzzer beating 3-point attempt to win. Brevin Knight got the start at point guard for Luke Ridnour, who continued his sub par play as of late, shooting 1 of 7 from the field, and only scoring 4 points. For Sacramento, Ron Artest was very quiet for the first 3 quarters, only scoring 4 points, but he got hot late in the fourth and scored 13 points over the last 10 minutes of the game.

NOV 26: VAN 104 - SAS 96

The Sonics then went up against the powerhouse San Antonio Spurs, another televised affair. The Spurs were without injured guard Manu Ginobili, so Gregg Popovic went with Michael Finley in the starting lineup. The Sonics were also fairly fortunate to get Tim Duncan in early foul trouble, limiting him to just 27 minutes of action. San Antonio is a very beatable team when neither Duncan nor Ginobili are on the court. Vancouver capitalized on their opportunity, despite another horrendous game from Luke Ridnour. Robert Swift had another great game, while Rashard Lewis remains a consistent scoring threat.

Following the team's consecutive wins against Sacramento and San Antonio, the Sonics had a 7-8 record, with only one game left in November - a home game against the Orlando Magic. Winning this game would have put Vancouver at .500 for the first time this season. However, as with the last time the teams met, Dwight Howard dominated the paint, and Orlando emerged victorious, this time by a final score of 90-85.

December did not start out as planned, with blow out losses to the Pacers and Jazz. On top of which, Brevin Knight tore his Achilles tendon in the 117-91 loss to Indiana, sidelining him for the next 10 weeks. Utah made short work of Vancouver, cruising to a 105-89 victory. Point guard Mike Wilks saw his first action of the season in the loss to the Jazz, replacing the injured Brevin Knight, and put up an underwhelming 5 points and 3 assists in 19 minutes of action. The combined effect of the blowout losses was that GM Rick Sund now felt another move was necessary to bring in a combo guard, one who could back up Ridnour at the point for the duration of Knight's injury. So Sund once again made a call to his Canadian counterpart, Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo, and they quickly came to an agreement.

Image

Dixon made a significant impact in his first game with the team, propelling them over the streaking Atlanta Hawks, by a final score of 119-100. Though he didn't light up the scoreboard, he played calmly, under control, and made smart decisions with the ball. He dished out 7 dimes, and had 0 turnovers, as well as 2 steals. The win brought Vancouver's record to 8-11.

DEC 8: VAN 123 - NOH 118 (OT)

The Sonics first televised game in December promised to be a good one - a home game against the sharpshooting New Orleans Hornets. Lewis against Peja. Ridnour trying to contain CP3. Wilcox and West at power forward. When asked about the Lewis-Stojakovic match-up, Sonic Chris Wilcox had encouraging words for his teammate.

"Yeah, that'll be good battle, right there, 'Shard and Peja. Those guys can really shoot. It's goin' be rainin' 3's all night. But I'm conifdent in 'Shard. He's in a zone right now. He's sharp. Oh wait, wait. That's a great nickname - Sharp. Sharp, like a shard of glass. Rashard 'Sharp' Lewis. I like that. I can dig that. That's gotta be his nickname from now on, right? Hahahahaha."

So Chris Wilcox has dubbed Rashard Lewis 'Sharp'.

The next week saw Vancouver go on a season high 4 game losing streak. The Golden State Warriors beat them at home 112-96, to notch only their 4th win of the season. They used a balanced attack to overpower the Sonics double team strategy, with 6 Warriors scoring in double figures, led by Jason Richardson's 19. Rashard 'Sharp' Lewis led all scorers with 26. Vancouver then left on 5 game road trip. The first stop was Milwaukee, where the Bucks used 29 points from Michael Redd to cruise to a 106-95 victory. The Sonics played in Chicago the following evening, and lost again, this time by a final margin of 111-100. Kirk Hinrich led the scoring for the Bulls with 25 points, while Ben Wallace dominated on the defensive end, grabbing 3 steals, swatting 4 shots, and pulling down 13 rebounds. Juan Dixon started in place of Anthony Parker, and scored 13 points to go along with 8 assists. The 106-93 loss to Cleveland on Friday would establish a new season high losing streak, and culminate a disappointing 0-4 week for Vancouver.

DEC 17: VAN 91 - DET 89

Game 4 of a 5 game road swing, against the 2nd best team in the Eastern Conference, and the Sonics are riding a 4 game losing streak. Their record at the moment is 9-15, and they desperately need a win to try to salvage something from this road trip. While 'Sharp' and Ridnour have stepped up admirably in the time since Brevin Knight's injury, the team's big men have collectively been struggling, especially in hitting key shots. This has forced Vancouver to settle for jump shots far too often on this road trip. To try to counteract this tendency, Bob Hill again started Juan Dixon in place of Anthony Parker, going with 2 point guards to feed the ball inside to the big men, and to initiate the fast break. Coach Hill and the whole team know that Detroit is far too good a defensive team to beat by taking the first available shot. You need to work the ball inside and play inside out to generate open looks against this team. Isolation basketball will not beat the Detroit Pistons.

Thanks. I do the short recaps for any games I don't play. They're interspersed throughout. The only games I play are the 4th quarters of 2 possession games, and I got blown out in every game that week. Everything else is simmed. Except during playoffs, then I'll play the 4th quarter of every game.

DEC 18: VAN 110 - MEM 104

The last game of Vancouver's road trip was in Memphis against the Grizzlies, the day after the dramatic victory over the Pistons. The Sonics came out with a lot of energy early as they looked to Rashard 'Sharp' Lewis to take control of the game. However, they may have looked to him too much, as he shot merely 5 of 14 from the field, turned the ball over 5 times, and fouled out early in the 4th quarter, showing signs that perhaps the pressure was getting to him. He was still active and aggressive in other areas, grabbing 10 boards for his 4th double-double of the year, along with 4 steals and 2 blocks. The Grizzlies took control in the 4th quarter thanks to season highs in points from both Mike Miller (30), and Damon Stoudamire (27). Juan Dixon started consecutive games for the Sonics for the first time this year, and he also set a new season high with 19 points.

GIVE ROBERT SWIFT A NICKNAME CONTEST
Well, it's a pretty obvious and boring contest but it goes like this:

I think Robert Swift needs a cool nickname now that he's beastin' on a regular basis, averaging about 15 points, 11 boards, and 2 blocks so far this year. So I'm calling on anyone who actually reads this to help me name Robert Swift. Grand prize is, well, naming Robert Swift. Post your replies in this thread. I may make a poll if I get enough replies, or I might just choose one I like. Or I might not choose any if they all suck.
