Four Game Recap
ABOVE: Andrew Bynum has come
a long way in such a short time
Minnesota Timberwolves @
Los Angeles Lakers
Nov. 7, LOS ANGELES. (AP) -- Maurice Evans made his return to the Lakers’ starting line up by leading the team with 19 points and 8 rebounds. He led four other scorers in double figures including rookie Jordan Farmar who finished with an impressive 15 points and 8 assists off the bench. “Farmar played his best game yet,” Phil Jackson said, “But he’s not going to start any games until he does this every night.”
Kobe Bryant was also impressive in his second game back by chipping in 13 points in limited minutes. The visiting Timberwolves were led by Ricky Davis and Kevin Garnett. Minnesota fell behind early but were never too far behind the home side until the third quarter when Bryant scored 8 of his 13 points. The Timberwolves used their size advantage in the last quarter; taking advantage of Andrew Bynum’s foul trouble. Minnesota trailed by as little as 6 points before the Lakers edged away in the closing minutes.

Portland Trailblazers
Nov. 8, PORTLAND. (AP) -- Brandon Roy scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half of this game and proved to Kobe Bryant that he was ready for the NBA. In a pre-game interview, Bryant said that he was confident that his Lakers would take advantage of the Trailblazers’ inexperience, especially rookie Brandon Roy. “I didn’t let him (Bryant) get to my head. I just wanted to prove him wrong,” Roy stated.
Bryant played limited minutes as Luke Walton led the team with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Jordan Farmar was impressive again with 14 points and 5 assists from off the bench. His hot play has led to many people asking Phil Jackson to start the young rookie to which he has quipped, “It’s still too early.” Andrew Bynum seems to have hit some kind of ‘Sophomore Wall’ as he fouled out in his second straight foul plagued game. “He’s just not coping,” Phil Jackson said before hinting, “He might not start the next game. He’s tired.”
The Lakers and Blazers were neck and neck for most of the game before the Lakers made an early 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter. Portland came back behind Roy’s 9 fourth quarter points and contributions from Raef Lafrentz and Jamaal Magloire. “It was a good win and confidence boost for us,” Juan Dixon stated, “We’re pumped for our next game.”
Detroit Pistons @
Los Angeles Lakers
Nov. 10, LOS ANGELES. (AP) -- Rip Hamilton, Chauncey Billups and Tayshaun Prince played poorly, leading to a fourth quarter meltdown against the Los Angeles Lakers. Rasheed Wallace led the team with 20 points and 11 rebounds and Nzar Mohammed had 18 points but it all depended on the productivity of the other three Pistons starters for the outcome of the game.
The Lakers on the other hand made a mistake be sitting back after taking a big lead after the first half. The Pistons battled and fought back into the game before Phil Jackson urged his side to play with a bit more intensity. It worked out as they didn’t even need an ailing Kobe Bryant to finish off their visiting opponents. Shammond Williams was big in the final quarter as he finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds despite dismal shooting. Maurice Evans, Luke Waltons, Vladimir Radmanovic and Jahidi White each finished with double digit scoring. Brian Cook was simply outstanding finishing with a team leading 26 points and 8 rebounds from off the bench.
Memphis Grizzlies @
Los Angeles Lakers
Nov. 12, LOS ANGELES. (AP) -- Pau Gasol made an unlikely return to play as doctors informed that he had made a speedy recovery. He seemed to be the spark to a struggling Memphis team as he finished the night with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists and led the Grizzlies to a 17 points win. Rookie Rudy Gay was impressive in his first ever game in Los Angeles and scored 8 points on 4 for 5 shooting in front of the STAPLES Centre crowd.
Andrew Bynum struggled again as he was man handled down low in the post. This brought Phil Jackson to react, “Andrew is not ready to start every game. That’s why we are anticipating the return of Kwame Brown tomorrow and Kwame will start in Andrew’s place.” The Lakers were led once more by another big game from Luke Walton who had 19 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists. Rookie Jordan Farmar put further pressure on Phil Jackson to start him as he outplayed Shammond Williams with 13 points on 6 for 11 shooting from off the bench.
