Do you play ball?

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

Matthew if you come down to Melbourne, I'll get you to fill in for our team for a game, or however long you're staying. Bring Kate too, and remind her to bring her pom-poms :D

Will_K8 yeah I see what you're saying dude... I'm the big guy on my team, if I show them how to pass they'll think it's coz I want them to pass me the ball more :D hehehe... I will try to give some advice or constructive criticism and if they don't take it well I'll either let it go or resort to the Michael Jordan school of solving problems: either I'll call them all flamming faggots like Laddas said, or I'll try to steal their girlfriends while I chomp on my cigar! MUAHAHAHAH!!!!

I can relate to the problem Stevan. When I played, I was the one who took the game seriously (some might say too seriously), wanting to compete. I wasn't one of the ones who would muck around every week in training. I was also the oldest on the team, and didn't go to school with any of my teammates, so much of the time, I was kind of seperated from the team - even when I was captain.

Andrew im in the same situation.........i don't go to HS with anyone on my team

well....if i have something to say i say it..........i'm VC and the C is my bestfriend on the team........besides i'm the teams vocal leader on the floor.
I also play some PG (i switched to SG recently) so i get the ball like all the time, and if someone doesn't listen they dont get the ball

well, i have 10 games left in the season..........then kick boxing

Name: Clint a.k.a. The Show Stoppa

HT: 5-6 1/2

WT: 145

Age: Between 16 to 18?

Country: From Baltimore Maryland, living in the Caribbean (or West Indies)

Years Playing Ball: 7

Strenghts:
1. Awesome Defender, (but not a good on the ball stealer, and nor a good shot blocker)

2. Scorer: despite my height I can score of penitration, jumpshots, and at time post up.

3. Very good midrange shooter (between 15-18 Feet), I use to be a pure shooter. I could shoot from anywhere on the court, but when I stopped playing for a while, I lost that part of my game.

4. Excellent Free Throw Shooter!

5. Good Passer!

6. Exellent Ball handler: (I'm not Allen Iverson, but good enough...LOL.)

7. Have tremendous ups for 5-6, I can at times touch the a 10 foot rim, or I can tap the backboard!

Weakness:
1. Fatigue/Stamina: When I get tired, it affects my whole game and can't play well!

2. Of course I'm not a Good Rebounder...LOL!

Where I live, the three top divisions or best level of basketball, is 1st Divsion, 2nd Division and 3rd Division...

I play in 3rd Division, this year for the first time. My team is the BARNES HILL REBELS... we have 12 games in a season, we play 4 quaters, 10 minutes per. So far we've played 6, and we're 4wins and 2 losses. We need 8 to qualify for the tournament/playoffs! I start at shooting guard, and play point at times during the game. After each game we put our stats on computer, and here are my stats so far after 6 games...

MIN PT AST STL REB BLK FGM/A FTM/A 3PM/A T.O. Fouls
173 101 18 12 9 0 34-73 30-36 3-11 20 15 Total

29 17 3 2 1.5 0 .466 .833 .273 3.3 2.5 AVG.

yeah I posted in the old form...

we got another game tonight, and on thursday... 2 games in 3 days, right now it looks like I won't be dressed for tonights game?

remember I have a problem with stamina and what not, in a 40 minute game, i play 29 / 30 minutes... last game sunday night, I played 35 mintues... that's the game I scored 24Points and had 6 dims (assists).

It wasn't till after the game when i rested, I started to have alot of pain... especailly like my stomach and ribs, and my thighs are killing me. I've been resting alot and drinking alot of milk & water... I couldn't even attend practice last night... man, this really hurts me!

N.B.: My Team averages like 83 to 85 points per game... I'm 2nd on my team in scoring with 16.9. My teammate Pernell leads the team with 17.8 points per game, and leads the league in three point shooing... so far he's: 14 out of 29 (48%)...

Stevan wrote:well since this is the basketball thread, and I do play here is my dilemma...

When a team mate (or several teammates) are dragging your team down, what do you do? We're all friends on this team but it's just not going well since we got moved up a league. I'm a quiet kind of guy on the court and, but after seeing people make the same mistakes week after week, what can I do? I realise I'm not perfect and I really didn't play that well in tonights game, but I made my mistakes when the game was well and truly over.
I've tried making jokes in reference to certain things in the hope that they will atleast get the message, but some people are like walls... atleast walls could play defence. I'm just worried that if I say something people will get upset since some of them can be sensitive. I know they don't put in the effort, and after three seasons a lot of them just don't seem to learn. On top of that one of our players just decides not to show up to random games recently. I pulled an MJ at half time and kind of had a go at the whole team... ofcourse one guy takes it personally. Fuck.
This shit is depressing, I felt like throwing up after the game. I dunno if I've ever been this close to blowing up before... :(
Sorry to dampen the mood, god basketball can be a bitch sometimes. If I blow up they'll hate me, if I try to talk to them properly they won't respond. One guy was pissed off that he played poorly so he said he was gonna go shoot around tomorrow. A guy that takes no shots, is going to go work on his jumpshot, and continue to throw no look passes and other ridiculous passes, and rack up 10 turnovers and not take a shot. Arrggg!

Stevan,
don't talk to our team in timeouts or at halftime...
take over the game, tell them what to do in defense, set up the offense, control the ball, set up plays for ur guys and hit the open man with the pass, the team will respect you and do what you're telling them!

hope that helps a bit...

best,
G

Thanks for the advice man, I guess I should update this thread with the latest news, this has been the season so far.

First game, we kept up first half, but got blown out in the second half. It was the first game in a higher level comp so I put it down to inexperience.

Second game, with our leading scorer not showing up, we trailed by 12 halfway through the second half. We made a run and I nailed a 3 at the buzzer to tie it up, finished as a draw (since we don't have overtime).

Third game we got absolutely blown out by a team that simply murders everyone so it wasn't a big deal.

Fourth game we got blown out by a team I thought we could beat. I told everyone they played like pussies during half time, as a way of trying to pump them up, but that didn't work. We made a brief run, but then we shat our selves.
Decided to have a chat with the team, sort some of the problems out before the next game, and did so.

Fifth game, expecting a turnaround, but we suffered the second worst defeat of the season. I told my team mates that each and every one of them is a shit cunt (and I included myself in that list even though I don't believe that, it's not like I've been playing great). The season is lost though, now I'm just going to play for my self, enjoy it, don't worry about everyone else, just look after my own game.

I give up, it doesn't matter what I try to do, they don't listen, and they certainly don't understand me so fuck it. The only reason I didn't quit is because I want to keep the team in this comp next year, only it's going to be made up of new players. Plus right now, if I go any further with what I say to them, there go the friendships. I tried being nice, didn't work, I sort of blew up and we'll see where that leads us.

I know I may sound like an asshole but you don't know until you've seen what happens week in, week out. I know some of you have been in the situation. I normally keep to myself, but somebody's gotta do the talking. I wanted to take on more of a leadership role because I felt like I could deal with whatever happened. I tried to deal with it and I failed. But atleast I failed trying to do it the right way unlike the rest of my team. It's simple, I can't stand losing... infact maybe I should see a shrink? j/k

Any of you superstars wanna come down under and join me next season? :P

If anyone has a prob with me using this thread as my personal venting thread, let me know through here, or pm.

Maybe you should try encouraging them in a slightly less abusive manner. I say this not as a shot at you but rather as constructive criticism. Your hard ass strategy does work with some people. Then again some people simply don't respond to it. My advice to you would be to try and give people constructive criticism (like pull them aside and suggest a better way to do something). This especially applies if you're one of the better players on the team, because the other players will think "hey he's trying to help me, maybe I should listen." instead of "Man, he thinks I suck, I shouldn't even bother trying". This strategy will also make you less likely to lose your friends during the season.

Believe my Billy-Bob I've tried doing it the nice way, this is our fourth season, and I was nice for three seasons. The reason I'm cracking is because people are making the same mistakes after three seasons, after I've tried to explain things, show them, etc. We'll see how they respond. Sometimes you just have to be an asshole, especially when being nice hasn't worked for so long.
