Rating bench players are difficult . you can't really blame Andrew. I guess he just tried to be really objective by basing it strictly on stats. However, i do think that bench players should be rated differently from the starters.
I've noticed that what EA does is give Rookies
and bench players very low Endurance, Hardiness and Fatigue Ratings. This pulls down the overall ratings of the players but they're not necessarily crap. The other attributes are still decent. Thus, they can still be effective for short periods of time. Just like in real life.
If you really want to be objective, you can base bench players' the stats on a 40 minute basis. Then just lower them if they end up having higher overall ratings than the player starting before them.
this is what i did for PBA Live and it worked out pretty well.
btw, on the simulated stats,
Even if a player has high offensive ratings, he still won't be able to average a lot of points if he's not a starter. So giving darko higher ratings won't necessarily make him score more when you simulate.
