Raptors' February Team Summary

Toronto kicked off this month with a bang, and won three consecutive games, including two tough road victories to start the month against the Miami Heat and a huge blow out win against the Los Angeles Lakers, while rapping it all up by beating the New York Knicks at home. This was Toronto's third three game winning streak of the season, and the Raptors headed into the All-Star Weekend as the top Atlantic Division team. Unfortunately, the Raptors yet again lost their last game of the month against a young Chicago Bulls team by a large margin of defeat, but the Raptors would put together another great 3-1 month.

Two Raptors were participating in the All-Star Weekend, Chris Bosh and J.R. Smith. Bosh won the MVP for the Got Milk? Rookie Challenge and led the star-studded sophomores to a fantastic victory over the rookies. J.R. Smith also entered the Rising Stars Slam Dunk Contest, and walked out as the new slam dunk champion after wowing the crowd and the judges with three perfect scores and beat out Tracy McGrady in the finals.

Jalen Rose played the first 3 games this month and was traded before the trade deadline, but not before going off with a spectacular display of offensive heroics as he would take over games with ease. First, he scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter against Miami, and also hit a three pointer with 2.8 seconds remaining to seal the deal on the victory. The Raptors blew out the Lakers the next game, but Jalen would stop any chances of the Lakers to make a run and scored 13 points to help put the Lakers away. The week after that had Jalen Rose hit a three pointer dagger in the hearts of the Knicks with 11 seconds remaining.

It was a shame that Jalen had to be traded after those incredible three games. Rose was shipped off with the inconsistent Donyell Marshall, 6th man Kedrick Brown and Rafael Araujo to the Los Angeles Clippers for Corey Maggette, Kerry Kittles, Chris Wilcox and Maurice Baker. Although Toronto gained more youth, athletiscm and cap room in the off-season, the new Raptors disappointed in their debut against Chicago.

Grade for the Month: A-

Raptor Monthly Report Card

A: Fantastic. This player has exceeded expectations and is doing very well.
B: Solid player. This player has done very well and has lived up to expectations or is doing slightly better than expected.
C: A little below average. This player has a slight dip in numbers, but it isn't a really big deal.
D: Below average. This player hasn't been doing what he's supposed to be doing and he's kind of crap.
F: Absolute garbage. This player has been given the minutes, but just never does anything right. It's rare for a player to get as bad as this.

Centers
C. Wilcox (B-) Wilcox was probably the least disappointing player to come in from the Clippers at the trade deadline. Wilcox never made a really large impact on the game, but he quietly managed to accumulate himself 8 points and 5 boards off the bench. If Wilcox can continue this type of play, Sam Mitchell might consider putting Wilcox into the starting lineup.

D. Davis (?) Davis has been activated, but he'll be playing behind Sow, Wilcox, Bonner and Battie.

T. Battie ( B ) Battie has continued to put up some pretty solid numbers, especially against Miami where he had a double-double against Shaquille O'Neal, and not to mention that Battie held him to only 16 points. His starting job might be in danger if Wilcox plays a little harder.

Power Fowards
C. Bosh (B-) He's gotten 3 double-doubles in 4 games (including a 22 point and 9 rebound effort against the Lakers), and although his scoring has dipped a bit and he struggled against the Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler against the Bulls, Bosh is starting to show signs of being a leader on this team.

M. Bonner(C-) Still hasn't been getting the playing time, and Sam Mitchell seems to be favouring the Raptors' other second round pick, Pape Sow over Matt.

A. Williams(?) Aaron is gone to the I.R. and Dale Davis is activated. Well woopty doo.

P. Sow(B-) His numbers aren't too good (3ppg and 4.3rpg), but Pape has really impressed us with his athletiscm and his defensive agressiveness.

Small Fowards
C. Maggette(C) Maggette was out of rhythm in his first game in Toronto with only 16 points and 2 rebounds. Hopefully this is not a sign of what is to come of this trade.

D. Stevenson (B-) Stevenson played very little minutes off the bench, but he has recorded at least 8 points or more in less than 15 minutes of play for all 4 games this month. What impressed Sam Mitchell the most was probably his defence against Kobe Bryant, and with Kedrick Brown out of the way, this is an opportunity for Stevenson to shine.

Shooting Guards
J.R. Smith (C-) After a couple of OK games and some whining from Smith, Sam Mitchell decided to insert the rookie back into the starting lineup against New York. Smith has probably hit the "rookie wall" as his shooting percentages are starting to take a nosedive. He did have a 21 point effort against Chicago, but he shot terribly from the field.

Kerry Kittles (C) After being praised by Rob Babcock for his defence and shooting skills, those attributes were no where to be found from Kittles in the first game.

Point Guards
R. Alston (B+) His numbers are virtually the same as last months, but we've been really surprised with his defence as of late. Alston has played terrific defence on some really talented point guards such as Dwyane Wade, Kirk Hinrich and Stephon Marbury. Guess what? None of them shot over 40%.

Alvin Williams (D) He has really struggled to get playing time and is a non-factor when he is on the court. Rose usually played a lot of minutes at the point guard but now he's traded, so maybe Williams can capitalize on that.

Los Angeles Clippers (4-17) vs Toronto Raptors (11-7)

Toronto will be hoping to start off the month of March with a win against some familiar faces when they face the Los Angeles Clippers at the Air Canada Center. Both teams only played one game after they made a large blockbuster deal at the trade deadline that sent Corey Maggette, Chris Wilcox, Kerry Kittles and Maurice Baker for Jalen Rose, Donyell Marshall Kedrick Brown and Rafael Araujo. Toronto lost their previous game against Chicago, where they were blown out and had poor performances from Corey Maggette and Kerry Kittles. Toronto has shuffled their starting lineup a little bit, putting Corey Maggette in the shooting guard spot and moving J.R. Smith to the small foward position.

"I think that we can exploit Corey's ability to break down the defence and use his strength on the inside when he is at the two guard," said Sam Mitchell. "Hopefully Maggette can feel more comfortable there and we can pull this thing off."

Los Angeles on the other hand, had a fantastic blowout win against the Dallas Mavericks with their new players and the Clippers are now on a two game winning streak. Elton Brand has continued his stellar consistent performance and leads his team in points and rebounds per game. Los Angeles also recently welcomed back starting point guard Marco Jaric, who had played only 7 games this season until he injured his back.

"We are glad to have Marco back," Bobby Simmons had said. Simmons lost his starting job after Kedrick Brown took over as the starting small foward. "He'll need to get used to playing alongside Jalen, Donyell and Kedrick, but I'm sure he'll pick-up fairly quickly."

"I love the Clippers, but I feel like I'm coming back home," said Kedrick Brown. "Toronto is such a great city and I already miss it, but right now I'm a Clipper and I've got to focus on helping to turn this franchise around."

Notes to Know
-Kedrick Brown never started a single game in Toronto and he made his first start this season as a Clipper.
-Rick Brunson had a brief stay as a Raptor for 3 games last season until he was traded to Chicago for Roger Mason J.R. Brunson averages 7 points per game coming off the bench.
-Mamadou N'diaye was born in Sengal, just like Raptor power foward Pape Sow, and N'diaye also played his first three seasons in the NBA as a Raptor.
-The Clippers are 6th in the league in turnovers and first in the league in committing fouls.

Starting 5

C - T. Battie(5.9ppg, 6.7rpg) vs C. Kaman(7.8ppg, 8.8rpg)

PF - C. Bosh(17.7ppg, 8.8rpg) vs E. Brand(21.8ppg, 10.8rpg)

SF - J.R. Smith(12.9ppg, 2.5rpg) vs K. Brown(10ppg, 3.2rpg)

SG - C. Maggette(18.7ppg, 4.1rpg) vs J. Rose(16.5ppg, 4.3rpg)

PG - R. Alston(9.8ppg, 5.8apg) vs M. Jaric(10.6ppg, 3.6apg)

Key Matchup
PF - ImageC. Bosh(17.7ppg, 8.8rpg) vs ImageE. Brand(21.8ppg, 10.8rpg)

This will be a tough battle for Chris Bosh, since Brand is one of the top rebounders and shot blockers in the league. Bosh just isn't strong enough to hold Brand downlow in the paint, and Brand can easily overpower Bosh if he does not get any inside help.

Clippers Can't Find Answer for Bosh and Maggette (116-112 OT Raptors*)

Raptors Boxscore
Clippers Boxscore

Even though both teams wanted a win over each other desperately, Toronto was the team that prevailed. The Raptors managed to tie the game at the fourth quarter and force a decisive overtime where the Raptors managed to squeak away a win. Chris Bosh scored a career high 28 points and also had 9 rebounds. Tony Battie and Rafer Alston also fell short on double-doubles. Alston had a career-high 6 steals this game along with 9 assists and 13 points. Corey Maggette and Kerry Kittles were both brought in from Los Angeles in a trade played poorly in their first games as Raptors and recieved heavy critiscm, but Maggette bounced back with a 25 point, 6 rebound and 6 assists effort. Kittles also had a monumental role during crunch time and scored 14 points off the bench.

Los Angeles' leading scorer Elton Brand was held to only 14 points, but shot 5 of 9 from the field and had a double-double. Ex-Raptor swingman Jalen Rose put up a game-high 32 points on 10 of 19 shooting and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. Kedrick Brown, the Raptors 6th man was given a starting job with the Clippers and also lit the Raptors up for 16 points. Bobby Simmons made a large contribution off the bench with 18 points.

Toronto went on a 10-2 run to start the game, and Rafer Alston already picked up two quick steals and managed to draw two fouls on Marco Jaric. Toronto opened up their first double-digit lead of the game after DeShawn Stevenson made two freethrows to open a 20-9 lead. Former Raptor big men Rafael Araujo and Donyell Marshall also made brief appearances this quarter and the Clippers would go on a 11-4 run to end the quarter.

Jalen Rose began to heat up as he scored the Clippers first 5 points and the Clippers tied the game at 40 apiece after a Bobby Simmons one-handed slam. The Raptors were up 46-44 after the first half of the game and Jalen Rose and Corey Maggette each had 10 points.

The Clippers took the lead in the third quarter and they would take a 62-57 lead, but Los Angeles got sloppy and shot only 30% this quarter. Back-to-Back J.R. Smith dunks and a short jumper by Kerry Kittles answered the Clippers and cut the deficit to one. Rafer Alston sparked another run by getting 5 straight points and Toronto re-took the lead, 75-69. Jalen Rose had 8 points to match Chris Bosh's 8 points and 5 rebounds.

An 8-0 run was orchestrated in the fourth quarter by back-to-back dunks by Elton Brand to give the Clippers the lead again. Toronto would fall behind by as many as 9 points, which was the largest lead of the game for the Clippers. With three minutes remaining, the score was 96-85 in favour of the Clippers, but the Raptors fought back with a 9-0 run to tie the game which was sparked by a miraculous four point play by Corey Maggette. J.R. Smith missed a three pointer as the buzzer sounded, and the Raptors were going to overtime!

Kerry Kittles went to work in overtime, hitting a three pointer and a layup as soon as overtime began. Jalen Rose singlehandedly nearly brought the Clippers the victory and was well known for his heroics in Toronto as he buried a three pointer, but Kerry Kittles set up Tony Battie for a mid-range jumper to answer back. Jalen Rose hit another jumper and that was answered again by Chris Bosh posterizing former teamate Donyell Marshall. Los Angeles was forced to call timeout and Rose had a four point play, giving the Clips their first lead in overtime. Corey Maggette answered right back by getting fouled and slamming down a stylish dunk. The Raptors led 112-108 with 29 seconds left and Chris Kaman hit a short jumper and was forced to foul Rafer Alston, who buried both free throws. Elton Brand tipped-in a missed shot by Kedrick Brown and Los Angeles had to foul Maggette and he made both shots at the line to end the game.

Toronto Raptors (12-7) @ Dallas Mavericks (11-5) Preview

The Toronto Raptors will travel from way up north to way down south in order to face the red hot Dallas Mavericks. The Raps were impressive with an exciting overtime win against the Los Angeles Clippers. Chris Bosh scored a career 28 points and hauled down 9 rebounds while ex-Clipper Corey Maggette bounced back from his terrible first outing as a Toronto Raptor to teach his former team a lesson with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and Kerry Kittles also chipped in with 14 points off the pine against his former team.

The Dallas Mavericks are currently one of the hottest teams in the league after starting the season with a mediocre 3-3 record, the Dallas Mavericks have gone 8-2 in their last ten games and are riding a two game winning streak thanks to the stellar play of the European superstar Dirk Nowitzki. Dallas' team statistics are very similar to the Raptors; they are one of the lowest ranked teams in the NBA in turnovers and offensive rebounds, and both teams are one of the top three teams in the league in field goal percentage.

Notes to Know
-Chris Bosh and Tony Battie should feel right at home since they are both born in Dallas.
-Keith Van Horn will make his first start of the season after playing all 16 games off the bench.

Starting 5

C - T. Battie(5.9ppg, 6.7rpg) vs D. Nowitzki(23.2ppg, 10.3rpg)

PF - C. Bosh(17.7ppg, 8.8rpg) vs K. Van Horn(7.9ppg, 4.1rpg)

SF - J.R. Smith(13ppg, 2.6rpg) vs J. Howard(10.6ppg, 5.8rpg)

SG - C. Maggette(19.1ppg, 4.2rpg) vs M. Finely(17.9ppg, 5.4apg)

PG - R. Alston(10ppg, 6apg) vs J. Terry(14.3ppg, 4.8apg)

Key Matchup
C - ImageT. Battie(5.9ppg, 6.7rpg) vs ImageD. Nowitzki(23.2ppg, 10.3rpg)

Dallas has made a strange but smart move this game, placing starting center Erick Dampier on the bench and making Dirk Nowitzki play center instead. Nowitzki can hit his shot from anywhere and even though Nowitzki's biggest weakness is his defence, Battie is not really an offensive threat so this matchup is definitely in the Mavericks' favour.

Yo dude, how were u able to make an 8 player trade? The max is 6 players!

Mon May 23, 2005 3:12 pm

Nice update and good win too. Maggette had a very good 2nd game for your team, he really filled the stat sheet and shot pretty efficient as well.
By beating the Clippers in such an exciting game, do you feel like you got the better of the trade? Rose had 32 but still they weren't traded for each other straight up.

Anthony15 wrote:Yo dude, how were u able to make an 8 player trade? The max is 6 players!

I'm guessing he did either two 2-for-2 trades, or a combo of trades that resulted in essentially a 4-for-4 trade....

wouldn't mind knowing what the trades were though It's Pape

Mon May 23, 2005 10:59 pm

Sorry I havent posted in here much at all. But this is really good, I like your write ups and your player report cards are great, they give me a chance to catch up on how you players are going when I dont have time to check all the game recaps. I look foward to hwo you go for the rest of the season.

Are you going to NLSC rookies??

Good Luck.
