Raptors' February Team Summary
Toronto kicked off this month with a bang, and won three consecutive games, including two tough road victories to start the month against the Miami Heat and a huge blow out win against the Los Angeles Lakers, while rapping it all up by beating the New York Knicks at home. This was Toronto's third three game winning streak of the season, and the Raptors headed into the All-Star Weekend as the top Atlantic Division team. Unfortunately, the Raptors yet again lost their last game of the month against a young Chicago Bulls team by a large margin of defeat, but the Raptors would put together another great 3-1 month.
Two Raptors were participating in the All-Star Weekend, Chris Bosh and J.R. Smith. Bosh won the MVP for the Got Milk? Rookie Challenge and led the star-studded sophomores to a fantastic victory over the rookies. J.R. Smith also entered the Rising Stars Slam Dunk Contest, and walked out as the new slam dunk champion after wowing the crowd and the judges with three perfect scores and beat out Tracy McGrady in the finals.
Jalen Rose played the first 3 games this month and was traded before the trade deadline, but not before going off with a spectacular display of offensive heroics as he would take over games with ease. First, he scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter against Miami, and also hit a three pointer with 2.8 seconds remaining to seal the deal on the victory. The Raptors blew out the Lakers the next game, but Jalen would stop any chances of the Lakers to make a run and scored 13 points to help put the Lakers away. The week after that had Jalen Rose hit a three pointer dagger in the hearts of the Knicks with 11 seconds remaining.
It was a shame that Jalen had to be traded after those incredible three games. Rose was shipped off with the inconsistent Donyell Marshall, 6th man Kedrick Brown and Rafael Araujo to the Los Angeles Clippers for Corey Maggette, Kerry Kittles, Chris Wilcox and Maurice Baker. Although Toronto gained more youth, athletiscm and cap room in the off-season, the new Raptors disappointed in their debut against Chicago.
Grade for the Month: A-
Raptor Monthly Report Card
A: Fantastic. This player has exceeded expectations and is doing very well.
B: Solid player. This player has done very well and has lived up to expectations or is doing slightly better than expected.
C: A little below average. This player has a slight dip in numbers, but it isn't a really big deal.
D: Below average. This player hasn't been doing what he's supposed to be doing and he's kind of crap.
F: Absolute garbage. This player has been given the minutes, but just never does anything right. It's rare for a player to get as bad as this.
Centers
C. Wilcox (B-) Wilcox was probably the least disappointing player to come in from the Clippers at the trade deadline. Wilcox never made a really large impact on the game, but he quietly managed to accumulate himself 8 points and 5 boards off the bench. If Wilcox can continue this type of play, Sam Mitchell might consider putting Wilcox into the starting lineup.
D. Davis (?) Davis has been activated, but he'll be playing behind Sow, Wilcox, Bonner and Battie.
T. Battie ( B ) Battie has continued to put up some pretty solid numbers, especially against Miami where he had a double-double against Shaquille O'Neal, and not to mention that Battie held him to only 16 points. His starting job might be in danger if Wilcox plays a little harder.
Power Fowards
C. Bosh (B-) He's gotten 3 double-doubles in 4 games (including a 22 point and 9 rebound effort against the Lakers), and although his scoring has dipped a bit and he struggled against the Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler against the Bulls, Bosh is starting to show signs of being a leader on this team.
M. Bonner(C-) Still hasn't been getting the playing time, and Sam Mitchell seems to be favouring the Raptors' other second round pick, Pape Sow over Matt.
A. Williams(?) Aaron is gone to the I.R. and Dale Davis is activated. Well woopty doo.
P. Sow(B-) His numbers aren't too good (3ppg and 4.3rpg), but Pape has really impressed us with his athletiscm and his defensive agressiveness.
Small Fowards
C. Maggette(C) Maggette was out of rhythm in his first game in Toronto with only 16 points and 2 rebounds. Hopefully this is not a sign of what is to come of this trade.
D. Stevenson (B-) Stevenson played very little minutes off the bench, but he has recorded at least 8 points or more in less than 15 minutes of play for all 4 games this month. What impressed Sam Mitchell the most was probably his defence against Kobe Bryant, and with Kedrick Brown out of the way, this is an opportunity for Stevenson to shine.
Shooting Guards
J.R. Smith (C-) After a couple of OK games and some whining from Smith, Sam Mitchell decided to insert the rookie back into the starting lineup against New York. Smith has probably hit the "rookie wall" as his shooting percentages are starting to take a nosedive. He did have a 21 point effort against Chicago, but he shot terribly from the field.
Kerry Kittles (C) After being praised by Rob Babcock for his defence and shooting skills, those attributes were no where to be found from Kittles in the first game.
Point Guards
R. Alston (B+) His numbers are virtually the same as last months, but we've been really surprised with his defence as of late. Alston has played terrific defence on some really talented point guards such as Dwyane Wade, Kirk Hinrich and Stephon Marbury. Guess what? None of them shot over 40%.
Alvin Williams (D) He has really struggled to get playing time and is a non-factor when he is on the court. Rose usually played a lot of minutes at the point guard but now he's traded, so maybe Williams can capitalize on that.
