Playing With Pride-Down In the Game, the Bulls Don’t Get Down on Themselves
PHILADELPHIA- Twice in this game, the Bulls could have thrown in the towel, given up. They had 15 points and the lead with 4:00 left in the first quarter, but only scored 2 points the rest of the period. Kirk Hinrich watched Allen Iverson hit a 25-footer at the buzzer, such were things going for the Bulls. They trailed 25-17, a deficit that grew to 29-17 in the early minutes of the second quarter. Color commentator Reggie Theus remarked at that point, “They’re [the 76ers] tearing them apart!”
No, but the Bulls didn’t give up there. Andres Nocioni made it his personal mission to make sure of that, as he abused Kyle Korver in the post and on the perimeter, scoring 8 points and grabbing 3 rebounds in the span of about 5 minutes. Chris Duhon played stifling defense, forcing offensive fouls and turnovers, while hitting both of his shots from the field. So even though the tandom of Iverson and Chris Webber combined for 25 points, the Bulls trailed by just 1 point at the half: 42-41.
The second time the Bulls could have, but didn’t hang their heads was after the 3rd quarter. Phili dominated just like in the first, with Iverson blowing by people left and right, and nailing jumpers from everywhere. The Bulls had no answer for “The Answer,” who went 7-11 in the period and once again hit a desperation 25-footer at the buzzer. The Bulls found themselves down 11 points, on the road, heading into the 4th quarter.
No, but the Bulls didn’t quit that time, either. “We play with pride,” Dwyane Wade said. Coach Scott Skiles decided to put the ball in Wade’s hands in the fourth, to let him create offense for himself and the team. It worked out well, as he was wheeling-and-dealing, and driving-and-dishing all over the court. Hinrich and Luol Deng both got hot, and Wade kept them that way with plenty of good looks at the basket. The two combined for 17 points on 7-9 shooting in the quarter.
AI, trying to hold off the Bulls rally, was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer with 27 seconds left in the game, and the Bulls leading 86-85. He missed the first two free throws, and hit the third, tying up the game at 86. But Wade went down, beat his man, and swished a 10-foot baseline jumper with 12 sec. left. The Bulls protected that 88-86 lead on the last play, when Webber’s jumper was stuffed by Eddy Curry.
GAME NOTES
The Bulls outrebounded the 76ers by 48-30, a huge margin.
Allen Iverson and Chris Webber scored 62% of their team’s points: 53 of Philadelphia’s 86. “I can’t do it alone,” AI said.
The Bulls played without backup Eric Piatkowski, who is expected to miss 7 games due to injuries sustained from a fall in his house.
It was a great win by the Bulls, who are playing with a whole new confidence after the trade for Dwayne Wade. They are 4-0 with “Flash,” and have improved their record to 10-8.
