I'm not sure about the death penalty as I have to imagine being forced to live for decades in a little cell without basic freedoms is a more effective punishment than a lot of people probably think and the suffering of the convicted is prolonged. Whatever the sentence, there's no way he should be allowed out on the streets ever again.

Apart from that, those nasty prisons in the US are the worst punishment, if you don't get fucked by the fact that you will never get out of prison, than you will get fucked by the other prisoners. Saw some documentaries where it looked like survival of the fittest in those prisons.
