Only a 7.0 for IGN. I'm surprised, I thought it was gonna get a great review, but it's apparently marred by a mediocre pacing, repetitive action, and a false sense of roaming freedom (unlike GTA IV I guess). Still, should be fun to play, I guess I just won't buy the limited edition though, just the regular one on PC.

Gamespot gave it a 8.5, but they're usually not as tough in their reviews.

Just installed the game and started playing it, it started out well (although with some strange slowdowns in the first driving scene), but it suddenly crashed on me for now reason. I hope it won't make a habit of doing that...

Which of the horrific hate crime console ports did you play?

There's a ton of reviews and stuff out there bashing it for not being "open-world with tons of crap to do" because none of them played the first game and just assumed this was GTA IN MAFIA DAYS! That's the problem with console-only idiots. If they had played the first one it was the said shit console ports (which they probably didn't play as those reviewers have either moved onto real jobs or the games were thrown onto the low-pay reviewers who have to review all the crap) and plus they love average crap in the first place. (See: MW/MW2.)

That PC review for example is just a copy/paste of the 360 one, by the same guy. The original game was reviewed back when there was a separate PC review team and it got a 9.2. They gave the Xbox/PS2 ports a 6.8 back in the day. GameSpot is the same, the review now is just a copy/paste of the 360. They loved the original when they had a PC team. The fact either of them scored the console ports of the first game a 7 is even worse. Shit wasn't even playable. Although those reviewers seem to have understood it's not GTA, it's a story based linear game instead of a sandbox.

Not saying the game can't be worse than the first, or even terrible, just that IGN/GameSpot/etc. reviews are usually worthless as hell. They love blockbuster crap that they've been hyping themselves over for months, and anything else they just spit a 7-9 on depending on how much it fits into what they wanted the game to be like. It's only when you have something expected to be crap that turns out awesome like Batman that you can escape this obvious review system. But since they wanted Mafia II to be GTA IV but in the mob days, and it's not because it was never going to be, they could never give it a 9 unless they were trying to shift copies at GameStop, it has to be an 8 at best.

Any review for a game that's not marked with red on MetaCritic isn't worth the time to read.

I'm having crashes to desktop each time I pick up a new Playboy magazine.

I like the game so far, but the lack of joypad support (other than xbox360), the relative linearity and those crashes I'm having keep me from really enjoying it.

Took some tweaking but I can finally enjoy this game with my gamepad. As usual with games now, it's only designed for Xbox360 gamepads, so an emulator is needed in order to play with another type of gamepad (I have the cordless Rumblepad 2). Makes a world of difference now, driving and fist fighting was such as hassle with the mouse and keyboard...

EDIT:
There apparently used to be a "freeride" mod in the first Mafia game, and someone already managed to make it work for Mafia II on PC. With it, you can change seasons at will, or use any car from the beginning, among other things. They apparently removed it from the Mafia Empire forums, but it can be found here (it's a reputable French website).

Damn the game was so short i was able to finish it within 8 hours of gameplay and the Ending was so freaking bad cuz it was soo easy to defeat falcone...i think there will be a sequel to this game and the new enemy is that old man Mr. Galvante...

If i were to rate this game i think ill give it an 8.5 :D

...meaning you were playing it on easy. :P

Anyway, those who really rated the game so bad may not have played the first one which is basically the same pattern as with this.

Alright here goes, I've finished the game in like 14 hours or so on the most difficult of difficulties. All I've got to say is: this game is epic in its own right. The story drove me from laugh to WTF towards the end. :( Although nobody compares to Tommy Angelo's ascension from Taxi Driver to apparently a big part of Salieri's mafia. Vito held his own though.

 Sequel plz.

So Kris have beaten the final stage "easily" but it took me awhile to actually strategize because I actually played on the Hard difficulty. The last two areas really took a lot of playing time. But it's worth the annoyance. (Y)

The ending is sad though. :( But not as sad as that of the first game.

So uhh, Kris, would you mind posting an image of your game's Load Chapter screen?
