DENVER, Ocotober 26th
The Oklahoma City Thunder is travelling to Denver, Colorado for its only preseason game to take on its Northwest division rivals, the Nuggets.
The Nuggets started as hot as if they were still in last season’s playoffs, largely because of the stellar play of swingman JR Smith. JR made 8 of the Nuggets’ first 10 points, including two three pointers, while the Thunder was struggling to get anything to go. That was not the way they sought to start their season.
Coach Brooks had to talk things over early, but with success. Not only were they able to catch up with the Nuggets, but thanks to some terrific defense in the second quarter, Nuggets guard Chauncey was held to just 2 points in the first half, and finally some working offense, the Thunder was able to take the lead late in the second. Kevin Durant and rookie James Harden, who had a solid NBA debut, combined for 16 points in the second period. The score at the half was 44-41 in favor of Oklahoma City.
Russell Westbrook goes in for the ridiculous up and under layup in traffic. His Thunder lost though.
So far, so good.
In the third though, the Nuggets started to take over. Led by JR Smith, the Nuggets’ offense was simply too much to handle for the Thunder, as they scored 60 points over the last two quarters, evenly distributed at 30 each.
Main reason for this was sloppy passing on the part of the Thunder. 15 Turnovers as opposed to 6 Nuggets giveaways, ultimately lead to many Nuggets buckets
“Not taking care of the basketball will give you that”, Nuggets coach Scoot Brooks said after the game.
Russell Westbrook was going nuts in the third, scoring 10 straight Thunder points, but those flashes of brilliance weren’t enough against a well balanced Nuggets team, which routed the Thunder for their first preseason victory.
