Great moments in NBA history

Postby koberulz on Sun Dec 27, 2009 7:46 pm

I'm working on a DVD cover at the moment, and I'm trying to include images of some great moments in NBA history, and I'm running low on ideas.

So far, I have:
  • Jordan's last shot with the Bulls
  • Jordan's game winner against the Cavs in 89
  • Wilt scores 100
  • Reggie Miller making a choking gesture in the direction of Spike Lee
  • Havlicek steals the ball
  • Erving's ridiculous one-handed reverse layup on the Lakers
  • Kobe's game winner in game 4 of the Suns series in 2006
  • The Warriors upset the Mavs in 2007

Any other suggestions? I've had a quick Google for images relating to T-Mac's 13 in 35, but couldn't find anything, and other than that I'm just throwing in random images of Maravich, Shaq/Kobe, Malone/Stockton, Bird/Magic, Wilt/Russel, Abdul-Jabbar, Robinson, and so on. Images would be really helpful, and discussion is more than welcome.

I call it overrated as I don't believe it was not the 2nd (or even top 10) greatest game in NBA history. Sure it was a great individual performance under tough circumstances for Jordan, but I've seen the game a couple of times & I just don't consider it that great of a game outside one great individual performance. Jazz played pretty average & Mailman did his usual Australia Post impression late in the 4th. Overall I would definitely put it below the MJ shot game vs Cavs & vs Jazz.

Even putting aside my Bulls bias, I'd say it was a great game between two great teams that came down to the wire; the kind of thing you want to see in the NBA Finals. There's Jordan's performance while feeling under the weather and on the road in one of the most difficult venues to win in (then and in recent seasons), the current and soon-to-be Hall of Famers involved and the meaningful nature of the game (a pivotal Game 5 in the NBA Finals) which are all significant factors but on top of that, I'd call it a really good game of basketball to watch.

If you're going to rank the flu game lower then frankly I think you've got to knock Wilt's 100 point game down a few notches, too. I know it sounds sacrilege to say that but if we're talking about the quality of the game then I don't know that it's the greatest game of all-time given that from all accounts, it turned into a complete farce in the final minutes with Wilt's teammates force feeding him the ball and the Knicks fouling on every trip down the floor, in a game where the result had long since been decided and become an afterthought. It's meaningful in that Wilt's 100 is a staggering record but as for the game itself? It doesn't sound like an all-time classic, the record aside it's a regular season blowout. I'd say it better fits the description of a game that isn't all that great outside one great individual performance.

This gallery might be of some use. I'm guessing that's what will be the most helpful to you koberulz, the iconic photos from NBA history like Pippen helping Jordan to the bench or Jordan's lost shot as a Bull, Wilt holding up the handwritten "100" sign, Dr. J mid-flight on the infamous layup...things like that.

I found that first image of him when I googled it but got a 404 error. Thanks for that.

I'm done now. I've got The Last Shot, The Shot, Wilt's 100, Wilt vs Russell, Knicks Choke, Havlicek Stole The Ball, Stockton Wins The Game, The Flu Game, Steal By Bird, Kareem, Junior Sky Hook, David Robinson, Dr. J's Reverse, Pete Maravich, 13 in 35, Fisher Scores, Shaq & Kobe, Kobe Beats The Suns, We Believe, Horry's Game Winner, Iverson Over Lue, Nuggets Upset Sonics, Stockton & Malone, Bird vs Magic, and The Logo.

I'll post the whole cover in the Photoshop Lounge when I'm done.

Agreed, I wouldn't put Wilt's in the top 20 All-Time because it probably wasn't that good of a game. Same with Abdul-Jabbar achievement. Ditto with Willis Redd injury game.

As for Bulls-Jazz, you could argue there were numerous good games in those Finals series. Game 1 2007 MJ buzzer beater/Mailman choke, Game 5 2007 Flu Game/Mailman choke, Game 6 2007 Steve Kerr jumper, Game 5 2008 Mailman doesn't choke, Game 6 2008 MJ shot/Mailman choke. Obviously the Flu Game & Game 6 2008 stand out above the others for their defining moments/performances.

I'd put Nuggets-Supersonics 1st Round Game 5 1994 up there as a great game. The recent Bulls-Celtics playoff series had at least 1-2 great games in it.

But yes, I can understand an NBA Finals game being ranked higher than games that mean slightly less. But if that's the case, then Suns-Celtics triple OT must be up near top of list, as well as some of the classic Celtics-Lakers matchups & so on.

As for the Flu Game, Luc Longley was the unsung star of that one, keeping the Bulls within range for MJ to strike :P

But as you can see, I wanted Jazz to win in 1997 & 1998 as was a big fan of their teams.

But if you were to look at it the other way, if The Mailman had delivered with bad flu in game 5 & MJ had choked time & time again in the 4th quarter then I have no doubt that historians would not call it the #2 greatest NBA game of All-Time. Heck, even if it was Pippen (in my eyes he was the true 2007 Finals MVP) or Kukoc who had that same game as MJ did, it wouldn't have been considered top 2, maybe not even top 20. That's my problem with it, the obvious bias involved because it was MJ delivering.

Then again, I've probably got reverse bias & I'm being a bit overly harsh & shouldn't. In the end, history is always written from a winner's perspective, so be it I guess. If I have an issue I can just publish my own top 20 games of All-time :P

I think that might be fun, trying to compile our own top ten or twenty or whatever. I do see your point (and it would be boring if we all had the same opinion, after all) but even putting aside my own bias and what I like about the outcome of that game, I do think it was a very good one to watch with enough meaning that it's a fair call to rank it fairly high. When compiling such a list, I think you have to strike a balance between the memorable moments, historical significance (including any records set), significance within the season itself and the overall quality of the game in so far as it being enjoyable to watch from start to finish.

I think trying to compile a proper list would take too long. I just simply haven't seen enough NBA games over my lifetime to be a proper judge. I will however accept that I do have reverse bias  Was a good game though, just not the desired result :P

The really funny thing is that every year in that entire post is ten years off.

Are you absolutely sure you're not drunk? Not even a little bit?

Perhaps you should try getting drunk, then, see if that fixes the problem. I know a girl who is actually far more coherent and sensible when she's drunk, maybe you have the same problem. :P

More effective? Perhaps. More talented? No.

You give LeBron Kobe's athletic abilities and leave him with his current skills, he'd be nowhere near Kobe's level.

I love this picture and I don't have a clue why. It's probably because back in that day you didn't really get to see the game the same way we see it now and seeing that steal from the floor is just sick. (Y)

It's an angle you seldom see. When most people who weren't in the building think of that moment, they probably think of the video:
