I'm not saying it's not possible, but I don't see why everything has to be an indication of psychological or emotional issues. I realise that such issues can manifest themselves in a variety of ways, but I don't think it's the case here, because they're playing characters (as evident by outtakes and other videos that show them out of character) and playing up certain characteristics for comic effect. They've discovered a style of comedy and a topic for satire that resonates with people, that being pop culture from Generation Y's childhood, that weren't so good looking back on them...or even at the time, for that matter. It's a skewed take on nostalgia which usually has us looking back on things with rose coloured glasses, even if they sucked. Sure, it might be how they really feel about those movies, TV shows and whatever, but I highly doubt it consumes them, or that they are consumed by a desire to be kids again or are angry that they can't.
When an ordinary explanation will suffice, why go for an extraordinary one? If that's what you want to believe then fair enough, but to me that's a stretch when the Nostalgia Critic and Nostalgia Chick are characters of Doug Walker and Lindsay Ellis respectively, created and exaggerated for comic effect.
