Freshman Calimbas Will Declare For Draft
March 20, 2013
ATLANTA (AP) – So much was said about freshman PG Jesrie Calimbas and his season for Maryland filling in the shoes of 2012 first overall pick Jao Wu. Now it is looking like he will follow in Wu’s footsteps and declare for the NBA Draft. After a college season in which he averaged 12.7 ppg, 4.5 apg, 1.3 spg; it all came down to one shot that should haunt him for weeks to come.
Maryland could not escape the first round of the NCAA tourney against a lower seeded North Carolina side missing its best player. Calibas was terrible under pressure as he shot 2-11 from the field and finished with just 7 points, 2 assists, 6 turnovers in an ugly 54-53 loss. Calimbas also missed the potential game tying and overtime forcing free throw with 1.3 seconds left in the ball game.
He was in good spirits after the game though and thought his performance would not affect his draft stock, “I’m still confident that there is a place for me out there (in the NBA).”

Otoo Leads Blue Devils In Rout, Virginia Continues Cinderella Story
March 22, 2013
ATLANTA (AP) – The 3rd seeded Duke Blue Devils got another strong scoring performance from Junior PF Zee Otoo as they routed the 11th seeded Akron Zips 68-52. Otoo top scored with 22 points on 10-12 shooting and added 8 rebounds for good measure. Akron was led by Alexander Sotirov’s 37 points but did not have the firepower to compete with Duke.
It was only the third time in the Zips’ history that they have reached the NCAA tourney after only their second ever time as MAC champions. Senior SG Sotirov was the reason for the Zips making it this far as he led the team in scoring with 26.7 ppg (second in the nation). He is to declare for the NBA Draft and is looking like a solid first round prospect.
Meanwhile, 11th seeded Virgina continued their fairytale run with a comfortable 62-49 win against 3rd seeded Xavier. The Cavaliers’ tight zone defense was the difference as they shut down the Musketeers. Likely All-American PG Christian Oliver was again the main player for his side as he notched a near triple double of 13 points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists. Virginia advances to face 2nd seeded UCLA in the Sweet Sixteen.
