Christian Oliver Leads Upset Against Villanova

March 19, 2013

ATLANTA (AP) – NBA hopeful Christian Oliver led Virginia (11 seed) to a 76-70 win against Villanova (6 seed). Sophomore PG Oliver, 20, scored finished with 26 points and 6 assists to help cause an upset of the Wildcats. Fellow NBA hopeful and Wildcats star Leigh Meredith led the Cats with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists.

Virginia face third seeded Georgetown in the next round. In other games, first seeded Kentucky cruised past Harvard 79-45 with SF Justine Calimbas putting up 23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks. SG Alexander Sotirov scored 26 points to lead the 11 seed Akron Zips past 6 seed Marquette 64-54. Blue Devils Junior PF Zee Otoo scored 16 points to help lead 3 seed Duke in a 67-55 win against lowly 14 seed Washington State.

Freshman Calimbas Will Declare For Draft

March 20, 2013

ATLANTA (AP) – So much was said about freshman PG Jesrie Calimbas and his season for Maryland filling in the shoes of 2012 first overall pick Jao Wu. Now it is looking like he will follow in Wu’s footsteps and declare for the NBA Draft. After a college season in which he averaged 12.7 ppg, 4.5 apg, 1.3 spg; it all came down to one shot that should haunt him for weeks to come.

Maryland could not escape the first round of the NCAA tourney against a lower seeded North Carolina side missing its best player. Calibas was terrible under pressure as he shot 2-11 from the field and finished with just 7 points, 2 assists, 6 turnovers in an ugly 54-53 loss. Calimbas also missed the potential game tying and overtime forcing free throw with 1.3 seconds left in the ball game.

He was in good spirits after the game though and thought his performance would not affect his draft stock, “I’m still confident that there is a place for me out there (in the NBA).”

Otoo Leads Blue Devils In Rout, Virginia Continues Cinderella Story

March 22, 2013

ATLANTA (AP) – The 3rd seeded Duke Blue Devils got another strong scoring performance from Junior PF Zee Otoo as they routed the 11th seeded Akron Zips 68-52. Otoo top scored with 22 points on 10-12 shooting and added 8 rebounds for good measure. Akron was led by Alexander Sotirov’s 37 points but did not have the firepower to compete with Duke.

It was only the third time in the Zips’ history that they have reached the NCAA tourney after only their second ever time as MAC champions. Senior SG Sotirov was the reason for the Zips making it this far as he led the team in scoring with 26.7 ppg (second in the nation). He is to declare for the NBA Draft and is looking like a solid first round prospect.

Meanwhile, 11th seeded Virgina continued their fairytale run with a comfortable 62-49 win against 3rd seeded Xavier. The Cavaliers’ tight zone defense was the difference as they shut down the Musketeers. Likely All-American PG Christian Oliver was again the main player for his side as he notched a near triple double of 13 points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists. Virginia advances to face 2nd seeded UCLA in the Sweet Sixteen.

Oliver Leads Cavaliers Into Elite Eight

March 24, 2013

ATLANTA (AP) – As the buzzer sounded, Christian Oliver slumped to the ground. The German national team PG and Virginia sophomore cried as his teammates surrounded him before carrying him to his feet. The 6’0” floor general could not believe that he had just willed his team back from the brink of elimination against UCLA.

The Bruins held a 43-21 lead at the halftime break before crippling defense and some hot shooting from Oliver salvaged a win and a ticket to the next round. “This was just amazing,” Oliver said afterwards, “I can’t believe it. Not even in my wildest dreams would I have pictured this.” Oliver scored four three pointers in a row and finished with 17 second half points and the Cavaliers held on for a 62-58 win. Their tickets to the Elite Eight were punched when Oliver drained an three with 36 seconds remaining in the game. Oliver finished with 28 points and 5 assists.

Bruins junior SG Julian Martin was devastated about the loss. He had a brilliant first half but couldn’t find his shooting stroke in the second half. Martin, 21, finished with 12 points (4-16 FG, 2-7 3PT, 2-8 FT) and an embarrassing 7 turnovers as a result of the effective zone Virginia put up.

Who is that Oliver guy? If only my teammates was as good as me we could have won the game easily. 7 T.O because I'm running the team and my teammates couldn't catch my perfect pass. Fuck them :shake:
