New Year's Resolutions.

Postby Jackal on Wed Dec 24, 2008 7:15 am

I'm a bit early I suppose, but I'm not much of a Christmas person myself...so hence the early question.

What are your new years resolutions going to be this time around? I think I did pretty well with the last ones I made, I tried to be more organized and more goal oriented.

I got a promotion at work that has me earning 9.50 instead of 7 per hour and my grades have never looked better. (English > Dutch.) I also said I'd lose a lot of the fatness I was being bogged down by and take a more positive outlook on life despite all the shit we've gone through as a family. (Drugs, alcohol, depression, death, attempted suicides and poverty.) We're in better times now I suppose, just short three to four members of the family, alas. But all right, if you keep a smile on your face long enough, problems seem to have a way of working themselves out. Or the people just die. One of the two.

Anyways, this coming year I'm hoping to be a nicer person, less rude remarks, less sarcasm and being kinder. It's kind of tough to be honest, because everyone thinks I'm sick or ill whenever I behave nicely. (It's not like I'm hated (I think?)...it's just people are used to the sarcasm/evilness that comes with me.) Not to mention that I should pull fewer legs this year.

Besides that I'm pretty happy with how the last two years have gone...barring a couple of deaths in the family.

So how about it guys? Quit smoking? Less drinking? Weight watching? More sex? More women (men for Axel)?

Share, share!

Loosing some weight, getting into a couple of good workout habits I have lined up for myself. Eating more veges (already started and in a good habit already)

Considering the weight is the only thing "wrong" with me that is all I plan to correct.
Opinions are my own.

Every year I make it my New Year's Resolution to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. I'm not gonna change it this year. So it's basically just that and getting a scholarship from the exchange student program thing, which requires me to have a 8/10 (A) average in school at the end of the year. So yeah, I think it's enough for me.

I need to start working out again. I used to do my 100 situps/pushups and stretching every single day for a few years, and I became so absolutely lazy about it. Now, I'm like a disabled grandpa. I mostly need to do the stretching because my back is fucked up and I need to keep my legs...well, operational I guess.
Also, I really need to spend less time playing on my PC and more time with my wife, I became the type of husband I despise in the past few months/couple of years.
Oh, and find a better job.

Probably just making a bigger effort to curb two of my biggest vices, spending money somewhat impulsively (eg getting boxsets and the like as soon as they come out) and procrastination. I made those resolutions last year too and I did a [i]little[/b] better this year but ideally, I'd like to kick the habits once and for all. With a lot of my friends moving out of town with new jobs, I also resolve to do a better job at keeping in touch with them.

New Year's Resolutions are a weird thing, they're usually things we should resolve to do much earlier and in all likelihood could commit to at any time of the year, though I guess there's the "new year, fresh start" aspect has more significance to us than resolving to do whatever beginning August 17th or another random date.

How about procrastinating on your impulsive buying? Use one vice to eliminate another vice.

That's pretty much the way I see it, the whole new year = new start thing. I try to implement that sort of thinking on a day to day basis too, but with the gray/cold weather mixed with cold and shrivled up people, it's not always an attitude you can keep up day in and day out.

What I have noticed is that when I get a bit unhealthy with food, I make it a point to start eating "clean" from Monday onwards. (New week, fresh start.)

Perhaps not a resoulution, but I've decided not to be clean-shaven in 2009, regardless of the occassion. (I shave for stuff like weddings, graduations and the like.) But this year, it's going to be trim, trim & a bit more trim. (That's random, I know, but day before yesterday while "styling" the beard, I took off a piece with the razor which forced me to shave it all off.)

Agreed and it makes sense really, if you want to start fresh you basically have to start over from the beginning of a cycle, be it a week, month, year or whatever. It also gives you a bit of time to wean yourself off things or phase something out.

I'd love to stop smoking and get back out on the basketball court so I can get in shape. I want to make it a point to move out of the house next year.

I know I've already said it, but it's officially Christmas over here now, so merry Christmas. Plus everybody's sleeping now and they kind of left me alone with the champagne and I've been trying to cut the alcohol so yeah, I needed to do something to distract my mind.

I am probably most definitely going to get some champagne now, bye.

I guess my resolution is to be more outgoing and not worry as much about what I should say. Being a first year university student and living away from my friends has made me realize that sometimes I can be quite socially reclusive.

But don't you see? If you give up all other beverages rather than enjoying select ones in moderation, then they're still controlling your life.

But seriously, that's a tough one.

I realized all I'm giving up all these drinks but I'm aiming towards purifying myself and I know this alone will help with my weight. It's going to be great for me I'm positive about it.

And Andrew, it's just for a year . Right now I have an unhealthy addiction to soda and shakes and stuff. Never really drank coffee or tea or anything. ALL I DRINK NOW IS COKE, NO JOKE. I DON'T THINK I DRANK ANYTHING BUT COKE AND SHAKES FOR 2 MONTHS NOW. I'm hoping that 2010 I will be able to drink what I want in moderation. Plus in 2010 I'll be legal to drink so (Y) (Y) for me.

Just find alternatives. If you're drinking sodas because of its sweetness then try going for like diet coke or juice thats low in sugar. Everything, even sodas, should and can be consumed in moderation.

Doobie, don't you get tired of Coke and shakes? I mean, I used to drink Coke all the time when I was a kid and just kind of grew tired of it. Same for milkshakes, the taste kind of gets old after a while.

Anyway, water isn't all you can drink if you're trying to cut sugar out of your diet. Coffee (no cream or milk, one sugar) and no added sugar orange/grapefruit juice are good for breakfast. Most dietitians actually suggest consuming one glass of freshly-squeezed grapefruit juiced with each and every meal. They are very high in fiber and help you control your appetite or something.

I understand that and I admire your resolve, but as Joe' said you could certainly shake it up with juice when you feel like something different. Nothing wrong with a glass of OJ as far as I'm aware. ;)

Anyway, best of luck with it. (Y)

I used to yearly give up everything but water, juice, and gatorade for 8 months of the year for track season. Its tough to stick too. But best of luck on that one...

For me my goals for this year
1. Get back in shape. Track ended the way i did, i "quit", and i feel so fucking out of shape it sickens me. As soon as i can im going to get on a weight program...speaking of which i have research to do
2. Cut back on the gaming: at least to a point where its not the only thing i do
3. Find a Job
4. Get the fuck out of this house with said money from said job
