FAILPORT FAILPORT FAILPORT FAILPORT.

Seems like a lot of stuff being said talks about a crappy frame-rate even on beefed-up computers. Rockstar is suggesting to use medium at most for now, and they're going to have to release a patch, otherwise their reputation could take a serious hit.

Maybe they shouldn't have increased the image resolution and the number of polygons. I'm guessing playing it on lower settings is more or less equivalent to the 360/PS3 version in term of graphics quality?

GTA IV PC patch released
Posted at 04:12 GMT by Chris :: Category: GTA IV :: Comments: 17
The patch promised by Rockstar for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV has now been released. Start up GTA IV and connect to LIVE to initiate the download. The patch is 32.6MB and will take a few minutes to install. It should fix the following issues:

* A fix to the crash after legal screen that some German customers were reporting.
* Numerous improvements to the video editor: Smarter naming of videos, improved rendering quality, better fx during replays.
* Fix to bowling while using certain sensitive mice.
* Fix for ATI 1900 shadows.
* Overall savings to memory.
* Graphic improvements to particle systems and mirrors.
* Multiplayer character settings are preserved.
* Support for DirectInput controllers.

fo sure it worth.. I just cant stop playing it

Re: GTA IV

Fri Dec 19, 2008 2:58 am

I installed it yesterday (after the usual SecuROM problem that had me request an "unlock" code to be able to register it  ...) but haven't tried it yet. That's torture, but I think I want to finish Far Cry 2 first, otherwise I'll lose interest in it, because I'm sure GTA will absorb me as much as Fallout 3 did...

even more.. belive me

Re: GTA IV

I gave it a try to see how it runs and what the fuss is all about, and I gotta admit I was wrong earlier...It does run like shit. My GTX260 handles any game at max settings, but definitely not this one, and it doesn't even look that great. There's tons of stuff on screen and it's mostly the large amount of sounds that makes up for it, but it's full of ugly low-res textures as expected, which is typically synonym of good performance on a decent PC, but not in this case.
I never say that for any game and I don't consider myself a whining noob, but GTA IV is painfully unoptimized for PC. Still looks like fun though, just needs some good tweaking.

have you installed the patch and special nvidia drivers for gta iv?

Re: GTA IV

Sat Dec 20, 2008 1:39 am

Yup, installed both of them, but it's still annoyingly laggy, I have to lower the LOD settings to medium basically, that should not have to happen... I'll do some more research online to see if there are already any suggestions to gain performance. I checked the config files but it does not look like they can be viewed properly with a text editor, I'd like to change the mapping on my controller too...

EDIT: I just checked the official forums for the first time...Wow, I hadn't realized how bad it is. Threads about poor performance have reached 70+ pages in barely two weeks. There are suggestions here and there, but the bottomline is, even people with very decent PCs have to turn down most graphic settings like crazy. I thought it was bad that I had to lower the volume of traffic, shadows and level of details to maybe 60-65%, and mostly the view distance (apparently the main performance killer) to 20-25, but most people apparently need to lower them even more, sometimes having to lower their resolution.

This is ridiculous on Rockstar's part. Because a game has a zillion things going on on screen most of the time doesn't mean it should take up so much graphic memory, considering how low-resolution most of the textures are. There's plenty going on with Crysis or Far Cry 2 too, and it still yields much better performance while also looking much prettier...

I bought this game a couple of days after it came out and it hasn't disappointed me although I don't know what to do next. On game Progress it says 62% Completed and I've killed Dmitryi, the guy Nico was working for the whole time and when I killed him or beat the level all the credits come up but like I said it only says 62%. Does anyone know what to do next? BTW there are no more letters on the map or places you can go to.

Re: GTA IV

Wed Jan 28, 2009 2:17 am

If you've finished all the main storyline missions then you're free to do whatever you want, until you get bored of the game.

Re: GTA IV

Wed Jan 28, 2009 2:33 am

To get up to 100% you gotta shoot all the birds, complete the stunt jumps and do all the side quest people thingys (the blue person on the map, you gotta be close to them and at the right day/time of day to have those show up)

when you complete the story you get a website you can goto in game and it will show you the locations of the above things you havent done yet

Re: GTA IV

Wed Jan 28, 2009 2:58 am

Well yeah I completed all the missions so yeah now all I have to do is complete the stunts like JS said but I don't think I will be doing that because all the interesting parts have passed.

Re: GTA IV

Wed Jan 28, 2009 8:47 am

Yeah, you've got to be really into doing all that stuff to get 100% completion. I think I got around 80% completion in GTA3 but I've never come closer than that to date.

im probably gonna get my manager to return my copy today. it's been sitting in a closet for months and i have no desire to pick it up again. this game has no replayability value at all not even the multiplayer could save it. plus i save a little over 3 GB of hard drive space by deleting it. (Y)
