N-Word Hurled at Blacks During Westwood Prop 8 Protest
Geoffrey, a student at UCLA and regular Rod 2.0 reader, joined the massive protest outside the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westwood. Geoffrey was called the n-word at least twice.
It was like being at a klan rally except the klansmen were wearing Abercrombie polos and Birkenstocks. YOU NIGGER, one man shouted at men. If your people want to call me a FAGGOT, I will call you a nigger. Someone else said same thing to me on the next block near the temple...me and my friend were walking, he is also gay but Korean, and a young WeHo clone said after last night the niggers better not come to West Hollywood if they knew what was BEST for them.
Los Angeles resident and Rod 2.0 reader A. Ronald says he and his boyfriend, who are both black, were carrying NO ON PROP 8 signs and still subjected to racial abuse.
Three older men accosted my friend and shouted, "Black people did this, I hope you people are happy!" A young lesbian couple with mohawks and Obama buttons joined the shouting and said there were "very disappointed with black people" and "how could we" after the Obama victory. This was stupid for them to single us out because we were carrying those blue NO ON PROP 8 signs! I pointed that out and the one of the older men said it didn't matter because "most black people hated gays" and he was "wrong" to think we had compassion. That was the most insulting thing I had ever heard. I guess he never thought we were gay.
Jasmyne Cannick has a similar and unfortunate report. "I have received several phone calls from Blacks, both gay and straight, who were caught up in Westwood around the time of that march. From being called 'niggers' to being accosted in their cars and told that it was because of '
you people gays don't have equal rights and
you better watch your back,' these gays have lost their damn minds."
This is because blacks voted overwhelmingly (70+%) for Prop. 8 (gay marriage ban) in California. As they always do for these kinds of things. And they had increased turnout due to Obama. And when combined with the solid amount of white social "conservatives" and Hispanics (who also supported, although not as much as blacks) this allowed Prop. 8 to pass in "Blue" state like California.
I've actually been waiting about this for some time. I always wonder when interest groups in a political coalition will turn on each other over an issue. Especially if they're "identity" fanatics.

I suppose everyone has their politics and beliefs, but I've never understood people who are discriminated against and subjected to slurs then discriminate and hurl slurs at other groups of people. If you oppose a certain behaviour, you certainly shouldn't perpetuate it. That said, I don't doubt gay people are upset with the outcome but one form of negative discrimination is no better than another.

the part of the article doesn't surprise me as Mormons have historically been racists against blacks. they weren't allowed to go to BYU until 1989. and that's becuase they were needed to compete in sports. if you can't beat em, recruit em.
the only reason why i went out to vote last week was to vote no on 8 since CA is almost always a blue state and I was planning on voting for Obama
Mon Nov 10, 2008 2:14 pm
amen benji!!! lol! we are finally seeing who the real racists are.
Mon Nov 10, 2008 2:53 pm
As opposed to all the fake racists we've seen so far?

Huh? When did it say anything about Mormons being racist?
The only thing the story has to do with Mormons is that they were protesting outside a Mormon church.
This was racist insane gays who wanted to protest at a Mormon church (for some insane reason) and saw black people and started hurling racist comments at them. Not racist Mormons responding to the protest.
Mon Nov 10, 2008 5:36 pm
hmm i guess i didn't read it right the first time, but the gay rights activists were condemning the Mormon (as well as pretty much every church's) stance on Prop 8.
however, i do see the irony in blacks voting for a discriminatory change in the California Constitution. that was a big reason why i chose no on 8 becuase i have been discriminated against and i wouldn't want that for anybody else
Mon Nov 10, 2008 6:04 pm
It's not really ironic, blacks on average are some of the most religious and anti-homosexual people in the country. Just like it's not really ironic to see gays attacking religions, or races that go against them.
The interesting stuff is, as always, interest groups turning on each other, and the "stabbed in the back" myth.
that was a big reason why i chose no on 8 becuase i have been discriminated against and i wouldn't want that for anybody else
Would you, and anyone else on here, vote for/against a ban on polygamy? Elimination of age restrictions?
Mon Nov 10, 2008 6:33 pm
Not saying that the same point can't be made about polygamy, but how is it the same as same-sex marriage? I'd like to hear some points.
I don't know how to react to the passing of prop 8. I am for gay rights and all, but if California isn't ready to accept gay marriages, I'd rather not force the issue. If gay people are as intolerant as the ones in the article, I don't see how they are deserving of equal rights.

Why can't I marry any consenting adult I want?
We allow contracts between more than just two parties in other situations. (Even social contracts.) Why not marriage?

regarding the prop 8 in californication
focus on the family has an amazing story. start listening at 10:45

btw the mormon church banned polygamy back in the late 1800s!!

Proposition 8 is entirely unconstitutional. People shouldn't even be allowed to vote on referenda like that.
Tue Nov 11, 2008 7:14 am
People shouldn't be allowed to decide on whether they like something or not?

not if it restricts the rights of others.

Not by the California Constitution it isn't anymore!
People shouldn't be allowed to decide on whether they like something or not?
Should people be allowed to decide on if they want to return blacks to slavery or not? Or are there certain things that don't get to be put up for mob rule to decide?
Tue Nov 11, 2008 1:59 pm
oooo nice benji. btw i love the one where we arnt supposed to judge them. hmmmm. wait a second if i tell them God says its wrong they immediately judge me. very weird this nation

You're comparing stopping two people from marrying the same sex to importing generations of a nations to a life of slavery?
Tue Nov 11, 2008 3:51 pm
Actually, I'm not:
if they want to return blacks to slavery
Either way. Liberty is liberty, no?
My liberty stops only when it deliberately harms another. How does marrying who I want do that?

Just remember: articles/news just like this represent a minority. Do most homophobes go out hunting gays to kill? No. But if they do will you hear a story about it? damn right you will. Do most Islams suicide bomb Jerusalem? There's about a billion on the planet so the answer would be no. But do we hear about it when it happens? Yes. This is the same thing: idiots giving other people in their minority a bad name. For some reason interest groups seem to have a problem seeing similarities rather than differences...The same thing is true in the disabled community between the blind, the deaf, and the physically disabled. They tend to compete rather than joining together. It just doesnt make sense to me.
As for the rest of it: Who gives a shit who anyone wants to marry? as far as the government is concerned: there SHOULD NOT be a difference between a marriage or a civil union. Also: to putt: i've met several gay couples with adopted children who have better family lives than straight kids born to straight parents. Gay marriage doesnt affect the family, its just a different view than what most of america is used to. I dont care what "God" or the bible say: Jesus never said a damn word about homosexuality and if you are following "christian" beliefs: you shouldnt give a shit what they do as long as they are still good people.
Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:03 pm
That's your liberty, not mine or someone else's. I can be anti gay marriage just as I can be anti people picking their noses. It's my decision to not like it the same way it's your decision to try to argue virtually everything anyone says.
Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:10 pm
Nobody said you can't not like gay marriage, or even hate homosexuals.
For some reason interest groups seem to have a problem seeing similarities rather than differences...
Always true. The first people the Communists turned on was the Socialists.
The same thing is true in the disabled community between the blind, the deaf, and the physically disabled. They tend to compete rather than joining together. It just doesnt make sense to me.
The deaf community is one of my favorites. Apparently certain groups are very territorial over the "true deaf" (born deaf) vs. the rest. And don't even get started on the people opposed to cochlear implants for denying "deaf heritage" or whatever it was.
Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:14 pm
When you try compare gay marriage to slavery though, which was one of the greatest atrocities in mankind, it is in a way saying you shouldn't be anti gay marriage.
And yes, that's an assumption just like you're assuming this is a post.
Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:19 pm
Well, it was an
example, not a true statement of comparison. We can agree there are variations of degrees in denial of liberty. But they're still denials of liberty.
Noticed something, didn't want to edit.
That's your liberty, not mine or someone else's.
Actually, it's all our liberty. That's the great thing. You get to marry who you want. And so do I. And so does Axel. Everyone wins! (Except whoever decides to marry me. Amirite?)
Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:22 pm
So I can marry my cousin? Awesome.
Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:23 pm
If you're both consenting adults, why should other people care?
