Good Basketball Shoes?

Postby BZ on Thu Nov 06, 2008 2:00 pm

Alright, since this is a basketball forum and I assume alot of you play ball as well, I'm gonna give it a try.

I've been playing ball for most of my life. I usually play basketball outdoors, and my ankles have been fine. It wasn't until recently when I purchased a pair of new Jordan Flight 23's
Image

and used them for games did I start to sprain my ankle. I must've sprained it twice over the span of 4 months wearing that shoe. Definitely not gonna wear it anymore over fear of a 3rd. The shoe has low ankle support, and the sole is damn heavy.

Anyone know any shoes that are great, light shoes that are sturdy and great at preventing ankle sprains? Getting older each year, and can't really afford to experiment anymore.

Thinking of getting the new Kobe's which is VERY light, I'm guessing I'll have to wear ankle braces with them.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

Yes, get light shoes, preferably with ankle support. Nobody plays basketball with steel-toed boots.

Just for kicks:

I'd normally advocate Nikes, the ankle injuries I had when I played all came down to stepping on someone else's foot or in one case a rundown surface on the school's outdoor courts. I'd definitely steer clear of the pair you've got though, I see what you mean about a lack of ankle support and the sole does look pretty heavy.

The newer Jordans all suck when it comes down to ankle support. I find them particularly uncomfortable too.

The best shoes you could ever get are Asics' ALL JAPAN. I have been using them indoors for a long time and I haven't twisted my ankles once. Really hard to find, though, unless you live in Japan or know somebody who lives in Japan.

Other good choices are Jordan I's and, as Cyanide pointed out, Nike's Air Penny II. Stay away from And 1 and Adidas.

While I'm more of an outside player, I've always liked high cut Nike, especially the Shox. Right now, I have the Air Force 25, and they're pretty comfortable. Quite heavy though.

Thanks to those that helped.

Joe, are you talking about these shoes?

Image

That's what I googled up, a bunch of other shoes that look nothing like BBall shoes, so I assume those are the ones. They look pretty light and comfy though, the ankle support doesn't seem that great.

After investigating some more around the net, I'll probably end up getting Lebron 2 or 5, or Nike Zoom Kobe 3's. The Kobe's barely have any ankle support, but it's very light, tight, and stable. So I'm guessing if I wear an ankle brace with it while playing it should work out well hopefully.

Get Nike Hyperdunks if you want a shoe with great support, and very light.
I got a pair about 3 weeks ago, and they are so light compared to my old Airmax 360's. They also have great support and I recommend them to everyone. (Y)

Nope, I'm talking about these:

They're not the best appearance-wise, but I've never twisted, let alone sprained, my ankles when using these shoes. They're narrower in ankle area to prevent it from moving.

I'll definitely check that out. I've been eyeing a pair for a while.

Wow, I get what you're saying now. Those shoes definitely look nice for basketball, they're as tall as boots! I'm not so concerned by the looks, I'm sure it's much better standing up and being fine as opposed to laying on the ground writhing in pain and clutching some fancy Jordan's or other nice looking shoes.. been there and done that. I'll try to keep an eye out for those. Thanks.

The only basketball shoes I wear are Nike. Basically the Nike Shox because they're pretty much comfortable. Not because of the cushioning, and the talk say it helps your jumping ability. It's pretty much lite on the feet just any other Nike basketball or turf shoe.

Well, I've only had 2 pairs of basketball shoes in my life so far, which are Adidas Lyte Speed Feather and Converse Dayhawk Mid, but I'll say some about them.

Hmm .. These are the ones I currently have, and I only bought them 'cause I was in a need of new shoes, and they had a real nice discount (66%). They're ALRIGHT. I've rolled my ankle though, which still hurts after 2½ weeks, and they're quite slippery. ( The gym I usually play is really slippery itself too, so I'm not sure which one to blame. )

Really satisfying. I loved the looks, they were comfortable and quite soft as I remember. They were really durable too, since they only decayed when my foot grew too big for them.

Off the court, I wear Nike Tennis Classics with black and red.

They're extremely comfortable, while I'm almost never cold in them, despite walking through snow, etc. I don't start sweating or anything in warm rooms or so either, even though I wear them almost all day, from the time I put them on to go to school, till going to practice, home or if I have a PE during the day.

So yeah, my two most comfortable shoes are probably the Adidases and Nikes.

I'm currently using an old pair of Air Jordan 3's... They are wearing down badly though. So after Christmas I am most likely buying some new basketball sneakers.
