how to improve in basketball

Postby wargreymon54321 on Tue Oct 14, 2008 8:18 pm

hmm i'm 6 feet tall and i'm good at mid range shooting and i do post up at times as i like baby hook. i need to improve on a few things and i need suggestions on drills or practices i can do to improve.

- i'm trying to expand my shooting range, how should i get more range fast and also be more consistent at shooting?

- i'm trying to train for better explosiveness and more vertical jump.. any good drills for that?

- my footwork is also not up to par, how should i train my footwork?

- any drills to get better handle?

thanks.

Practice dribbling.

Oh, and master physics.

Just don't tell anyone else about this revolutionary system.

You can Google to find good drills....but yep, Benji is right, it's all practice....that's how I became a pretty good & consistent threat from 23-25 feet out....but there are no quick fixes, it takes a lot of practice....everyday for years....

They say that spending 10,000 hours at something makes you world-class level. I'm sure you could get away with doing a quarter of that and still be really really good.

Try that, and if problem persists, then you probably naturally suck.

Well, for shooting. You could practice shooting. Since you want range, you could do long-range shooting.

I think you can extract the general principle from this specific example.

Maybe you're not being clear enough, but if you want to "practice" good form for shooting, then study videotape of good NBA shooters, or Google basketball shooting forms, or get something from your local library. If you want to get more precise with dribbling, try using a tennis ball instead of a basketball. Other than that, just practice, as everyone had said, as in, just do it*

I'm with X. Search online or go the old school route and find a book on basketball drills and then regularly practice, practice, practice. Just to give you an idea though...

Practicing shooting is pretty straight forward. It's a matter of putting up a lot of shots from all different spots on the floor and developing a shooting form that feels comfortable and works for you. There are different games you can play and if you've got someone with you then you can practice shooting under the pressure of the defense (the old broom method, in which you get a person to hold up a broom in front of you so that you develop a nice arc on your jumpshot, can also be effective here).

Dribbling is pretty easy to practice as well. Start of slowly, just walking and dribbling the ball. Find something to look at and keep looking at it while you dribble up and down the court, so that you get used to dribbling without looking at the ball. You can then increase your speed and get used to looking around the court, as if to find teammates. As you get better, you can also set up markers/obstacles (chairs are fine) to dribble around and between to further enhance your ball control.

Passing is probably best practiced with someone else but if you're by yourself and have access to a wall that no one will have an issue with you putting some chalk marks on, draw a few Xs on the wall in chalk and then practice hitting those Xs with your passes. Not as good as having someone else to practice with but it can help.

These drills might be too basic for you, I'm not sure how well schooled you are in those fundamentals so they might not be appropriate. Once again, if you research a few drills and put in the work you should see results. :)

If you want to improve in shooting, you need to learn from the "best shooter in basketball history", that is JJ Reddick.

In Reddick's defense, that was a layup and not his patented jumpshot.

No, you might still hear it from commentators.

"Reddick's defense is (insert word)"

- abysmal
- horrible
- non-existent
- in need of improvement

That is if he ever finds himself on the court and off the bench.

What's you height Jao? You look tall, or your opponents just look small.

Tough call. I'm still inclined to give it to Redick, simply because Wesley at least hit something on the attempt.

Go on YouTube.com and type in Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan's basketball fundamentals. For ball handling type in Pistol Pete Maravich basketball fundamentals, and I can give you a few pointers here and there on vertical jumps & explosiveness. I'm going to be assistant coaching a little league for the first time, and it's going to be far different than the private basketball teaching that I do during the summer.
