Jason Williams retires

Postby Cartar on Sat Sep 27, 2008 6:45 am

Los Angeles Clippers point guard Jason Williams announced his retirement from the NBA today, ending his 10-year career. Signed by the Clippers as a free agent on August 7, 2008, Williams did not appear in a game for Los Angeles.

Williams enjoyed a 10-year NBA career that saw him take the court for three different teams, (Sacramento 1998-2001, Memphis 2001-2005 and Miami 2005-2008). A member of the NBA Champion Miami Heat in 2005-06, Williams started all 23 playoff games and averaged 9.3 points and 3.9 assists for Miami in helping to win the organization’s first title.

Very surprised about this decision, imo he had still at least 3-4 years left. Just surprising.

Indeed. Really surprising. Wonder what the Clippers will get for the cash though, I hope something useful.

His claim to fame was as a flashy player from the Sacramento days. After that, I barely hear about him again. At least he got a ring.

I wonder why he decided to retire a month and a half after signing. Isn't training camp happening right now?

Indeed, you'd think if he was mulling retirement he wouldn't be looking to sign on somewhere else. I guess he had a change of heart.

The Clippers must have been disappointed/shock though, they must have thought that they've gotten hold of a PG and all of a sudden he retires.

They've got a pretty good one already in Baron Davis. But yeah, really surprising. :?

White Chocolate rules.
I still remember that elbow pass to Raef LaFrentz during the All-Star festivities, too bad Raef missed the shot. Stupid LaFrentz.

He had some pretty good handles. Every Sacramento game on TV I'd watch and wonder what kind of absurd trick pass Jason Williams would perform

funny in signing a contract you would expect that he was intending to play ball.

they weren't a bad team on paper so im really confused right now.

But the Benji-meter has them at around 30 wins, so they are a poor team on paper.

This did hit m by surprise, since he isn't that old and isn't always injured. Then again, I don't think he has much to offer these days.

What? You mean when he started for a bunch of 50 win teams in Memphis and then won a title starting for Miami?

maybe he didn't really click with other clippers. and for sure, clippers don't seem to be a great team to play for either atm. i guess there were plenty of reasons to retire from j-will's perspective. however i c him attempting a comeback next year tho. pathetically that is. in the end he just wanted year of vacation time. just my guess.

He didn't really have a chance, training camp hasn't even started yet. All jokes aside, it probably had little to do with the Clippers, he probably just had second thoughts about continuing his career.

He would have been a crowd favorite. Ever since the showtime Lakers, Los Angeles fans have loved the fast paced flashy game.

...would Dunleavy have let him do that? Riley told him to keep the fancy stuff to a minimum.

At least there will no longer be any more of those pull-up threes.

Man...he was my fav pg after jason kidd in his sacramento days. I remember he had the best selling jersey after jordan retired the second time. Seems the new trend in the nba is retiring early...it's sad.

It's not really a new trend as it is a return to the standard. Guys like Kareem, Kevin Willis, Stockalone, Jordan, etc. were outliers, not the standard.

Has anyone considered that maybe, just maybe, he is retiring to get out of his contract with the Clippers, so he can get more money in Europe?
In the article it said his retirement from the NBA, he hasn't said anything about retiring from basketball. I think he might go to Europe for a year or two, get some more cash, and then maybe retire from professional basketball.
Just a thought.

Didn't they say something about him negotiating with Maccabi Tel-Aviv? Maybe he changed his mind and used "retirement" as the gateway to go to Europe. Seems highly unlikely though.

I guess it's possible, though if he wanted to do that he could have just asked to be released from his contract.
