Same here. And Smirnoff Ice too.

For local beers: Red Horse. The beer that kicks you in the head.

I don't particularly enjoy their regular lager, but their double-malt pilsner is amazing. Very full-bodied, extremely bitter beer, kind of like an English ale. €1,30 per bottle, though (as for most of the beers I listed before.)

I can never remember their more expensive one, but I think thats the one you're talking about... Ive found it in one shop in Melbourne. Cost $8 - but it was a dam nice beer...

Qballer wrote:no Aussies vouching for Foster's? I still remember their TV ads as if were yesterday.

BEER. Foster's, Australian for beer.

I've never had one... no one sells it. I'd like to though. My mate tells me its nice

Sure you can. You can go past it all the way to the vb tap!
But seriously, after my mates and I went on a pub crawl to a bunch of Euro-beer places, and tried a Carlton, it was like drinking a glass of malt! It was so god dam malty it was ridiculous... Now I dont like carlton nearly as much.
VB ftw!

Foster's is garbage, just like every other pale lager. Looks like piss, almost no head at all. Tastes thin and boring, add a little water to it and it's Budweiser.

Cost $8

Jesus, and I thought it was expensive here... Though it's worth it, eight dollars for a beer is ridiculous. Was it 50 or 33cl?

Fosters is the Great Aussie Scam. I've heard it's alright but I don't see it around either so I've never tried it.

Recently I've mostly been drinking the low carb "Blonde" beers but I'm still a fan of Tooheys Extra Dry and Extra Dry Platinum, though not so much these days. I'll still settle for a Tooheys New if I don't feel like spending a lot of money. I'm also a fan of Stella, Beck's, Blue Tongue (brewed here in Newcastle)...I feel there are some I'm leaving out. Don't mind Carlton Draught/Cold or Beez Neez, my old boss introduced me to the latter. Not a big fan of VB and especially not Tooheys Red.

33

8bucks a beer is pretty much standard price in melbourne clubs/pubs for a bottle. Off tap its cheaper, but I cant find this beer anywhere on tap...

You won't find it on tap. I can't even find it here on tap and it's brewed 30 miles from where I live.

€5 is pretty standard for pubs and bars here too, but definitely not for liquor stores. The most I've ever payed for a bottle of beer was €3,50 for Rogue.

Tooheys Extra Dry and Extra Dry Platinum

Tooheys Extra Dry has the potential to be a great beer. I just feel like they kind of over-filter it or something. Like, the aroma and the flavor are there but I wish they were stronger. Never had Platinum but from what I hear it's watery... I'm particularly fond of Tooheys Old; it finishes a bit rough on the palate but overall it's a pretty good beer.

1. in stores: 1 euro = 35 rubles (1.5 litres), 15 rubles (0.5 litres)
2. in Bars: 2 euro (0.5)

European beer:
1. in stores: 2 - 4 euro (0.5)
2. in bars: 5 -10 euro (0.5)

I prefer lagers to ales so that aspect of Extra Dry/Extra Dry Platinum doesn't bother me. The Platinums are significantly stronger though so if pure intoxication is your aim, they'll get you there faster.

Right, but if you're gonna drink vodka at least do it right. Old-fashioned glass, rocks, vodka and kahlua. Stir and serve.

Smirnoff Ice is known as a "girly drink" in case you didn't get it.

No, I got it, but if it's between beer or Smirnoff Ice, I'm still gonna get the Smirnoff. I just can't stand beer. It doesn't make me less of a "man" when it comes down to personal choice.

I've never understood why beer is the "man's drink" and is considered a hetero thing to do. I'm a liquor guy myself. I rarely drink beer and malt liquors, just liquor and strong mixed drinks.

My favorite beer is Corona and Blue Moon. Miller Lite is also good. Heavy beers and dark ales settle really hard on my stomach so I don't like them. My favorite malt beverage is Sparks because it has a lot of caffeine in it to keep me awake.

Just one of those stereotypes, I guess. Beer is an acquired taste for a lot of people whereas mixed drinks are more palatable to someone who doesn't drink much or is starting to get into that scene, so maybe it's a case of being "man enough" to stomach beer.

I don't mind beer, it is an acquired taste as Andrew alluded to, & I would drink more of it if it didn't make me piss like a fire hydrant....so yes, I usually go no more than 1 or 2, then get onto spirits (Scotch etc)....

I can do shots of vodka, which is supposedly harder than stomaching beer. I think it's just an acquired taste, as I just really dislike the taste of beer.

The need to consume large amounts of anything that has alcohol without worrying about hangovers or headaches after such an amount is the reason for that. Taste nice too.

Absolutely. There isn't the same kind of stigma attached to drinking spirits neat though, just mixed drinks. Whatever you like to drink, I say. When I first started drinking I mainly stuck to the so-called "lolly water" drinks but as I grew used to beer and developed a taste for it, that's what I stuck with.

It does come down to personal preference, as does everything else, but again, if you like vodka, you don't get Smirnoff Ice, you get a White Russian or something (I'm not a vodka kind of guy so I don't know many vodka-based drinks.)

I also believe beer isn't an acquired taste. I don't think it is something that grows on you, you don't get used to it, you either like it or you don't. I drink beer because I like it, just as I drink tonic water or lemonade or whatever because I like it. I didn't start drinking beer to feel manly, I just like how it tastes. I certainly think it tastes much better than Smirnoff Ice or Bacardi Breezer or any other kind of alcopop, artificial crap, I always have.

Straight vodka is much more of an acquired taste than beer. Much higher alcohol volume. Tastes like rubbing alcohol to me. Give me gin, rum or scotch on the rocks and I'll gladly drink it, vodka I can't drink unless it's mixed. Even then, I would prefer to be drinking something else.

As for ales settling hard on your stomach, I never had that kind of problem, I guess it's different for everyone of us. I actually find ales and darker beers to be much more digestible than lagers. I once had a bottle of Miller (godawful by the way; they should call it sparkling corn water) and it took almost three hours before I felt the need to piss, while it usually takes 15-20 minutes for an ale or stout.

I don't agree that that's necessarily the case. I think for some people it's fairly black and white but in my experience, it took a bit of getting used to, going from the sweeter mixed drinks to the taste of beer and most of the people I know were similar in that regard. However, that's not to say it's an acquired taste for everyone, some people are never going to like it and some will like it straight away but most people I've talked to about drinking beer feel it's a taste they've developed.
