If you download a file that has the ZIP or RAR file extension, then you need WINRAR to extract them from their archive. You can google "winrar" if you don't have it. Once the archive is open and you see the file(s), you will need to drag and drop them into the correct folder. The folder will vary depending on the type of files that are in the patch. More complicated patches should come with some instructions in a text file in the archive that you can open with notepad or wordpad. Here is a breakdown of where the file types go.
All patches that are not rosters go in various subdirectories of your main installation folder. The default location for NBA Live's installation folder is "C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\NBA Live 08\". If you chose a custom folder to install to and can't find it, just right click on the NBA Live 08 icon, click properties, and when the properties window opens, choose "find target" and it will open the directory for you.
FSH files are the graphic files. The go in the SGSM folder.
EBO files are the geometry files. They go in the SGSM folder.
BIG files are archives and can contain several different files. They go in the SGSM folder.
VIV files are archive files that can contain many files, including BIG files. VIV files need to go into their original folder, replacing the original viv.(Please backup your original VIV files incase you want to remove a patch.) Sometimes custom VIV files are added(like jerseys) and you won't be replacing any files since the game did not have them originally. In that case, you just put the file in it's proper directory so the game can recognize it. Example- A jersey VIV file should go int he SGSM\UNIFORMS folder.
Roster files have DBF extensions, and there are many DBF files in a roster. The go in your "My Documents\NBA Live 08\saves\save name\ directory.
Camera files go in the MERLIN directory.
AIACT files go in the AI\ACT folder.
Animations go in the ANIM\BODY folder.
I hope you understood this.
