The Beer Thread

Postby Indy on Mon Sep 22, 2008 10:26 pm

I think we had one of these before, but since I'm in Ireland I have beer on the mind quite often.

What are your favorite beers? Best places to get those beers? Any other beer opinions?

I've realized while here that the most incredible thing known to man is a pint of Guinness, but only in Dublin. Anywhere else in the world (even in the country of Ireland) Guinness is nothing like what it is here. It is an orgasm in a pint glass that I just cannot get enough of.

Leffe

Most of these are not that easy to buy here, but should be simple to find in Europe.

I like my beers light and smooth but not watered down like some american beers. Thats why I go with beck's...german for beer...

Image

...but if you like your beers frosty with zest..you can't go wrong with a corona & lime. Thats how I do...

I don't drink, I used to because I wanted to look cool in front of my sister's friends, even though I was like 10 years old. Now I don't, and I doubt I will.

hmmm... I missed out than. When I was in Ireland my dad kept telling me that I would love Guinness there... it turned out tasting like the same sludge in America.

I'm only allowed to drink since 2,5 weeks actually, but I drank some beer here and there before as well. I'm also gonna stick with a Corona and a lime, gotta love it.

But after a hard bball pracitce, when you're like thirsty as hell, the best thing in the world is a good old can of a Viennese beer called Ottakringer :D
Image

Ottakring is an area of Vienna and I'm actually 10 minutes away from the brewery.

Jesus, Corona sucks ass. Taste like fucking rust. Take the lime out of it and you might as well be drinking your own piss. Carlsberg and Beck's both taste pretty brutal too... LMAO @ Pisswasser

I don't completely agree on the "Germany's got the best beer" comment. I think it depends on what kind of beer you're fond of. I personally dislike lager and am mad at Germans/Czechs for having invented it. Though when you want a good amber ale, I agree that Germany's got the best. Diebels is pretty awesome...

That said, my favorites are

Hoegaarden Verboden Frukt
Chimay Bleu or Rouge (great cheese also)
Rogue Honey Cream Ale
Rogue Brown Nectar (would be even more amazing with slightly less carbonation)
Leffe Brune or Blond (too malty though)
Newcastle Brown
Ottakringer Dunkles (Buzzy you lucky son of a bitch!)
Hopf Dunkle Weisse (dark wheat. Best thing I've ever tasted)

Not easy to find at all here in Italy, though, and when you do find them, they're not easy on your wallet, so when I'm tight on budget I just get Ceres Old 9 or Leffe Blond, both great beers for the price...

I agree. Its a horrible beer, but good for people who don't like more 'beery' beers.

I do enjoy laughing when people buy a beer with raspberry cordial in it, and then have the nerve to call it something manly like a 'snakebite'.

My fav beer varies, but I love Grolsch, Peroni and Tiger.

I do a lot of homebrew though, so I get to make a lot of beer for cheap. Dam nice stuff too

I thought snakebites had beer, vodka, red cordial & some other spirit in it. I could be mistaken though. A mate raved about them yonks ago & shouted me one. Pretty ordinary, but was free so didn't turn it down. Tis the only time I had or probably will ever have it.

I like the Euro beers (German, Belgium, Austrian, Dutch), as well as liking the Irish stouts (Killkenny, Guinness).

I don't particularly enjoy their regular lager, but their double-malt pilsner is amazing. Very full-bodied, extremely bitter beer, kind of like an English ale. €1,30 per bottle, though (as for most of the beers I listed before.)

The X wrote:Killkenny

Cream ale, not stout, X. I hear it's pretty much the same as Smithwick's... Any truth to that? Smithwick's is a pretty damn good beer so if Kilkenny's even remotely similar I'll get one next time I'm at the bar.

Foster's is Australian's international beer, meaning it's not really sold here & nobody here really drinks it. Either that, or they have it rebranded for sale in Australia. I dunno. All I know is when I lived in New Zealand, I've had Foster's, but since being back in Australia, I can't recall ever seeing it at the bottle shop.

Either way, from what I remember, Foster's is a very forgettable beer & not worthy of recognition.

As for other beers I like, Beez Neez (Honey Ale Beer), is a good drop. Aside from that, I usually get into the Pure Blonde's (low carb beer) or Toohey's Extra Dry's.
