I'll assume your are talking about Alby's roster. Copy (drag and drop) the SGSM folder to the root NBA Live folder. You do not want a SGSM folder inside the SGSM folder. I normally extract the file to a temporary folder. Then copy the roster to the SAVES folder and then the SGSM folder.

Just in case you or anyone else does not know this. The SGSM folder contains the graphics files for the uniforms, player faces, player portraits, arenas and coaches. Modders create files that can be copied to this folder. By default player, uniform and arena graphics are contained in VIV files. The VIV files usually contain FSH files but can contain other types of files such as 3D mapping. FSH files contain the graphics files you see on the court. Player faces and portraits, uniforms, icons, arenas, etc. By default there are very few files in the root SGSM folder. Modders create new or updated players, uniforms, arenas and more. These files go in the SGSM folder. The games looks in the VIV file and uses the graphics but if there are files in the SGSM folder it will use them. This is why you can have the new Oklahoma City uniforms, arena and logos that replace the old Seattle graphics. This is why you can also add new players and coaches. If you don't have the Michael Beasley files he will have a weird colored head in the game. This also applies to shoes.

The files in the Optional folder do not have to be installed. Most change the look of the game to have an ESPN feel. My suggestion is to not install these until you learn what to do. Don't try to make major changes. Readme files are included. Use them. Another suggestion - if you want to try the xshadow or xindic files make backups of the original files so you can revert back to the originals.

You did not ask but the Gameplay Patch files really improve the game. Just make backups of the files first. These files work in conjunction with the roster.

To fix the crashing, try loading the original roster. If it works then you probably copied files to the wrong folder. If the game can't find a uniform file it may crash, so try a different team or another uniform. You need to isolate the problem. Then you can fix the problem yourself or ask for more help. If the game still crashes with the original roster then try to undo what you previously did.
