Hurricane Gustav to hit New Orleans

Postby cyanide on Sun Aug 31, 2008 1:01 pm

"This storm could be as bad as it gets," Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Saturday afternoon. "We could see flooding even worse than we saw in Hurricane Katrina."

It's expected to reach the US gulf coast late Monday or Tuesday. It might go down to a category 3, but it could still be a category 4. New Orleans has got to be the worst US place to live in.

Katrina was a category 3 when it hit landfall (the second time, it hit the bottom of Florida first) IIRC.
New Orleans has got to be the worst US place to live in.

It does sit in a hole surrounded by water and run for years by a corrupt political machine.

It's getting some steam. I took a couple meteorology courses so I'm watching this with the radar, satellite and weather maps for surrounding areas. I guess you could call me a weather geek somewhat because I'm going to be watching it the rest of the night and its Saturday.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city beginning 8 a.m. Sunday but urged residents to consider escaping "the mother of all storms" before then.

I wouldn't be sticking around either. Hopefully the fatalities can be avoided this time, even if the destruction can't.

This is New Orleans we're talking about. Half the city can't leave. You need car/money to leave.

The government should provide for those who truly dont have the means to leave which i think they've done a better job with this time....

Local (same "Chocolate City" Mayor!) and state governments, not the federal government.

(And last time over a million people got out from the area, only 30,000 did not or could not leave. Considering Blanco and Nagin didn't issue a call for evacuation before the last minute after Bush prodded them that's pretty impressive.)

Hopefully the levees won't be topped or break. And it'll just be like a standard hurricane and the media will not care just like they didn't until they broke.

hopefully this storm isn't as bad as they say its going to be. I'm in texas right now and they are talking about sending us down to help witb clean up and security if needed. I hope it doesn't come to that. I'd be glad to help but that woukd only mean more lives destroyed

They need to just leave New Orleans alone. Its a saftey hazard. Its already below sea level. I did some research and New Orleans gets brushed or hit by a hurricane every 3.80 years!! They're trying to rebuild the city, but the hurricane is going to destroy all their progress.

have you not heard of the 700 buses and the 10+ trains that can carry several thousand people each in a single trip?

edited due to inaccuracy.

The hurricade didnt do shit to New Orleans, it looks like New Orleans got hit by a rain storm. Fortunately the levys held this time.

this hurricane has already greatly increased buisness where i work. every time one of these things hits land even slightly hard(that even make sense?) we get insanely busy(i work for a back up power supply company). being said i always feel bad cause we pretty much beg for these and then they hit and i feel bad for the people, then feel even worse when i get overly happy about my paycheck thanks to the amount of ot. anyway..... that was probably pointless but whatever

Hornets Had No Contingency Plans For Gustav

Not that it would have been the most pressing issue facing the city as a whole but one would have thought the organisation would have made some plans, just in case.

Diddy, a little bit behind, compared to the destruction of katrina, gustav was like spitting at New Orleans. With where they are situated and the geography of the city etc. they will always be getting hit and always having to try to come up with a plan to minimize the effect on the citizens. They seemed to have at least semi learned that evacuating the day before isnt a good decision
