What/Who are the bandwagoners?

Postby Billie on Wed Jul 16, 2008 4:52 pm

I think that this is the latest or the most popular word or trend in the forum. I just want to know what the exact meaning of the word bandwagoner or bandwagon is.

Can you help me understand what this is all about. Everytime that there is a Laker fan with less than a hundred posts, members here with a hundred plus posts that hates kobe (I think that there are a thousand of them) will call him a bandwagoner. Same thing with Lebron or Dwayne Wade fans (except if LBJ or wade are compared to Kobe). They will call him a bandwagoner. How can I identify a true fan then?.

Is this the latest way to look cool?. I mean calling someone a bandwagoner and trying hard to oppose what most people like in order for you to look different from others?.I'm very puzzled.

You've been a registered member nine days. There is nothing new about "bandwagoner" claims.

I think you're just a "fret about bandwagons" bandwagoner.

Now it's the "mock statistics because I don't understand numerical representation of events" and likely the "I prefer emotions and feelings to arguments" bandwagons?

How quickly they jump on the bandwagons these days...and ever how quickly they want to troll!

I guess a couple of dictionary-style definitions would be the best place to start. Note that "fairweather fan" is another term for a bandwagoner.

Wikipedia wrote:A fairweather fan is a fan that roots for teams that are playing well.

Dictionary.com wrote:a popular trend that attracts growing support; "when they saw how things were going everybody jumped on the bandwagon"

Urban Dictionary wrote:In sports, someone who shamelessly cheers for a particular team not because he likes them or follows them faithfully, but only because that particular team is the "popular" choice or has been or is the top team in their specific sport recently. When that team which bandwagoners follow falls from grace, they gleefully jump on the next teams bandwagon and cheer for that team.

Essentially, it's someone whose fan "allegiance" changes depending on who's winning. The term "fairweather fan" is also used because such fans tend to stop supporting a team when things look bleak, drawing a parallel to good and bad weather (it's also known as "jumping off the bandwagon"). Despite being fickle, bandwagon fans are usually very outspoken, at least when the team is winning.

In Forum parlance it's a term that gets thrown around a lot, much like "hater" and "fanboy". It's a term that is probably used too readily to try and discredit someone but a legitimate example of a bandwagoner would be someone who rarely posts when their team is losing but begins posting enthusiastically when they start winning, usually in a very smug/boastful manner while trying to demonstrate their passion for and interest in the team. Since a bandwagoner's allegiance may also change frequently, anyone who displays such behaviour is likely to be identified as one. It's certainly not something that's restricted to this Forum and Lakers fans in general tend to have a rep for it, though they're certainly not the only ones.

It's not necessarily a fair assessment as we all have to "hop on the bandwagon" at some point but the idea of disliking something because it's popular or building up public figures just to tear them down later is nothing new and certainly not a phenomenon restricted to this Forum either.

It's a burn now to try and mock people who use arguments with support over emotions and beliefs? (Even if everyone hates me because of this.) I didn't know the NLSC was so religious before this bandwagon started up.

Just personal opinion. I found it funny and since people post how they feel about certain posts/threads, I felt the urge to do the same.

The fact that in NBA topics you use plenty of graphs and statistics (which I am not against by the way, they are actually very good) and seeing how graphs do not ave anything to do with this topic, made me chuckle a bit. No harm meant.

That still doesn't explain how it is even a burn. Let alone a good one.
plenty of graphs

You post a graph once and suddenly you're always doing it...

In my opinion it was a good burn. Simple as that. I think everybody is entitled to their own opinion just like you are to yours.

You do post plenty of statistics. Not only once.

Ok, perfect then. Since you do want people to have their own opinions, then how is me saying that personally I thought it was a good burn such a conflict.
You say people don't read but you are actually not reading because I already explained why I thought it was a good burn:

What? A conflict with what? Where did anyone say it was a conflict with anything? Other than the common definition of burn.

So a burn is pointing out something obvious but doing it off-topic?

Well that's perfectly fine rooting for another team if your favourite team did not make it. It just depends on how devoutly someone claims to follow a team when they don't at all. That is when people start calling others "bandwagoners".

Heh, I hate you so much Emiliano. *long-winded post regarding Ginobili, racism, stats, depressingly bad sense of humor, ball-shaving, The X's old 2005 prediction game, Blur > Oasis, and multiple graphs deleted*

On the subject of bandwagoners, it seems everyone is a Portland fan now. At least the Manu-lovers stay consistent with their homer-isms. Sure, I will bandwagon a team if my favorite is out (I am rather fond of Utah), and I care about individual players as much as I do teams, but I don't adopt an avatar of the team, speak of myself as part of the bandwagon team or make 100 posts in the thread about Summer League rookie progress, but that is just me.

I don't see how I ever offended you or anybody else. But it's ok. Knowing that you hate me means you think about me. How manly of you (Y) Big tough guy when sitting behind a computer screen huh. Ah, love it. Makes my day knowing that you follow me around just to see what I'll write next. Love it.

Ohhhh, i'm soooo sorry. That was a cheap shot?? What I wrote was a cheap shot? Tell me how it was? It meant no harm, I was stating my opinion. Simple as that. EVERY topic in this forum is full of opinions. But ohhhhh I'm soooo sorry. Because everything you write is ALWAYS perfect and on-topic.

Why don't you and lamrock. just jerk each other off while you are it? It's funny how people get mad over AN INTERNET FORUM! Get a life.
