I suppose we'll soon find out if he's right but it sounds more like speculation on Mutombo's part rather than inside knowledge.

Given the date on the article his prediction is a little overdue. However, with the Walsh rumours it may still come to pass.

The Donnie Walsh era in NY officially begins at 1pm EST. WFAN(660 AM) will carry the press conference. Unfortunately, siah's status won't be addressed. So I'll be twisting in the wind until the season's over.

This column by Adrian Wojnarowski asserts that Isiah won't be around as a coach, even though Walsh hired him in Indiana, but alludes to the fact he could retain some front office position with the team.

Meanwhile, so much for the denial. You hate to trot out cliches but the old standard of "Where there's smoke, there's fire" seems apt whenever a pro sports team goes to the trouble of denying anything. It also looks like Mutombo's prediction could be right after all, though a little later than originally suggested.

Buzz Up PrintNEW YORK (AP)—Isiah Thomas was fired as coach of the New York Knicks on Friday, ending a year fraught with embarrassing episodes on and off the court.

Thomas, the coach for two seasons, will remain with the organization reporting directly to new president Donnie Walsh, a rapid fall for Thomas who also was team president a little more than two weeks ago.

Walsh took over that role April 2, and his first big decision was to change coaches as he begins the process of turning around a team that never won a playoff game in Thomas’ tenure.

The Knicks finished 23-59, matching the franchise record for losses, in their seventh straight losing season.

Dude, this roster is godawful - bunch of me-first players who have no knowledge of basketball 101. The Knicks are going to suck for 3-4 years. Blowing up the roster is hard to do because of these ridiculous contracts. Bottom line, we're f-cked until the contracts expire. That's the Isiah Thomas Knick legacy.

"Without getting specific, Walsh said there were assignments he'd feel completely comfortable giving to Thomas....."

I'd def. keep him around as a scout, no denying he has an eye for talent. Its gonna be interesting to see how Donnie trys to fix this mess while still remaining a contender.

Sorry Stack, but The Teflon Con doesn't deserve to be a part of the Knick organization. He's run the franchise into the ground with his bonehead moves. I'm very disappointed he wasn't kicked to the curb. His eye for talent didn't translate to much.

Forget about contending....this team is going to suck for a long time.

Presumably if he's kept around, he's not going to have a lot of power and greatly reduced importance to the organisation, if not as a scout then as an advisor whose bad advice can be ignored. Or maybe he'll decline a lesser position and quietly move on to some other venture.

While I don't think it is one of Donnie Walsh's strong point to make bad contracts disappear. Jared Jeffries, Jerome James, Quentin Richardson and Zach Randolph's contracts should definitely go. I think that the Knicks would need at least wait until the 2009-10 season to feel some real changes in the team.

yep, smart pickup, he seems to fit into the Charlie Ward type role of a PG that doesn't need x number of shots to be effective....you can see that Walsh is trying to slowly change the culture of the team....bringing in Gallinari & Duhon is a start....hopefully keeping Lee too....

i remember starbury's glorious days. he was so fun to watch back then. i wonder if he can ever get back close to his old self. he just needs a motivation and i think he'll be fine. wherever he lands, hope it ain't italy like he said b4.

Hey, reassembling the 2002 Warriors worked for the Wizards, let's reassemble the 2005 Bulls. Alas with Crawford instead of Gordon or Hinrich. Though there might still be a chance to get both of them! They need to pry Antonio Davis out of retirement and bring Othella Harrington back as well.

True, though if the other team is simply after cap relief they can make the trade, cut him and let his contract come off the books at the end of the season. Mind you, that makes you wonder what would be coming the other way; potentially $20 mil worth of bad contracts for the Knicks instead of one that is due to expire. Maybe it's something they'll explore nevertheless, since Marbury's days in New York are supposedly over.

Marburt, the self-proclaimed best point guard in the NBA.. hahaha! It seems like mr. marbury doesn't want to play basketball anymore,or for the knicks perhaps.. you just can't see in him, the willingness and the passion for the game..

They should trade Randolph, E. Curry was doing great when Randolph wasn't with the team 2 years ago.. their rookie better be good and clear some cap space if they want lebron by 2010.. but I think Brooklyn has the greater chance in this chase for LeBron than NYK..
