The old laughing lady came briefly across my door...

Postby Bill Russell on Mon Nov 10, 2003 3:30 pm

I wonder if some of you guys know why I've disappeared for the last 3 weeks... I nearly died.

I do a scientific research on uni, and recently I published 2 articles. I went to an international congress of Production Engeenering to do a presentation about one of those articles on October 21st. It happened on a city called Ouro Preto (something like "Black Gold"), it's a very important city here in Brazil due to being one of the first to be inhabited.

Me and other master ("post-graduation") students went on a bus, it took the whole day to arrive there, and I was quite fine. We arrived there on 7 pm, took our baths and decided to go eat something. Cool.

The next day, I would do my presentation on 2 pm. I woke up at 9 am, and noticed my stomach wasn't right. I thought, "it could be something I ate yesterday, or that I'm a bit nervous due to the presentation in front of 50 people or something). I took a bath, ate my breakfast and joined the other guys as we took a bus to go to Ouro Preto (when we arrived there, there weren't hotel rooms, so we went to Mariana, the nearest city, to manage to get a room).

On the way to the bus, my stomach ached again. I thought it was something I ate, so I decided to arrive at the place where the meeting was being held to go take a poop... I did that, and my stomach felt very bad, it was like someone punched me in the belly for a thousand times.

I looked for my teacher and told her I wasn't feeling well... She was very kind and said she would do the presentation in my place. I took a taxi and got back to Mariana, to my room. Once there, I vomited 3 times in 1 hour, and couldn't stand up. My stomach felt horrible.

The next day, I had surgery on the appendix. 15 stitches on the right side of my belly. The appendix was inflamated (spl?), the doctors had to took it off and wash all my inside parts within the cut.

I had to take a medicine to prevent my stomach from inflamating. The problem was, my body didn't react well to this medicine. I kept taking it and vomiting like 4 times per night, for 4 days. The doctors didn't notice it, and told me to avoid drinking water.

I kept getting ill. Nevertheless, the doctors let me go home, saying everything was alright. My father, who traveled to stay with me, took me home on Monday. I had surgery on a place which was 730 km away from home.

When I arrived home, after nearly fainting in the car and throwing up 2 times, my aunt noticed I had difficult to breath. My father took me to the hospital, where some doctors took a X-ray and noticed I had an infection. I was taken to a hospital bed, again, and stayed there from Tuesday from Sunday (November 2nd). I was told that, due to my difficulty in breathing, all my inside parts were suffocated, and maybe they would have to open the cut to clean it again, but fortunately they didn't need to do it.

I spent all last week on bed, I can hardly walk now, though it will get better with me. I may miss the school year.

I don't know if I'm getting too personal or something, but some of you guys know me for more than 2 years and I've been always like that. I think I got some close friends (as a Internet connection allows) here at NLSC (and at .org too) that I can relate. I see no problem with that.

I don't know if I will post again, I think I need to take some time off to think a bit about life.

Sorry if I annoyed some of you guys.

I hoped your absence was due to less serious circumstances - study, work, or a vacation. I'm real sorry to hear that wasn't the case Tales. :(

I hope you have a full recovery, and can one day make a return to the community. It's certainly always fun having you around. :) Also, thank you for sharing this with us. I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed your absence, so I feel confident in saying when you get better - not if, when - a return to the forum will be most welcome.

Take care good buddy,

dude, I've been thinking about you, I noticed you were missing, was gonna make a "where's Tales" thread but I have barely been on the last few days due to school stuff.

Hope you make a quick recovery and everything is sweet. Just remember, chicks dig scars, and Yasmin will want to see the one on your Belly!! ;)

I can sort of relate to you, though I didn't have surgery, I had some problems last year and the docs thought it might have been my appendix. After some tests it turned out I passed a kidney stone. Quite painful, but the hard part, like in your case, is not knowing what the hell is wrong and the pain is so constant...

Hope it works out dude (y)

Sorry to hear that Tales...

I'm truly glad that you did live throught it, and that you and the people around you realized what was wrong before it was too late.

The worst thing i see from this is you not being able to finnish the school year...can't you take classes from home? Aren't there other options?

Near death experiences make up analyze life, think about our path and our decisions. Some people, the more ignorant ones, need one of them o push them into thinking. You are not one of those people, yet, a little self analysis never hurt anyone.

This should teach you to not take life for granted, and to not waste it on the small non-important things. I dislike the concept of time, yet i'd have to use the analogy of saying this...each second that passes, we're one second closer to our death. Some people don't realize it, yet, i'm sure that you realized that on that day.

Having your apendix removed is a good thing in itself. Although it produces iron, it is still an organ that is prone to inflimation all the time. You're better off without it. I subcounciously fear the day in which i'd have to have my apendixe removed, yet, ialso fullheartedly wait for that day...it will make my mind live more at easy.

I'm not criticizing you here...i'm only pointing out facts when i'm saying that this should teach you to not make asumptions. Next time that something's wrong with you, you will go to the doctor. This near death experience will probebly aid you in saving your life another thousand times.

Reflect on life Tales, yet don't change your big picture. You're a great person, stay that way. You have talent in your line of work, stick to it. Do not let this incident live life in fear, yet, also...learn from it. Think of how your world would be without you, and after thinking enough...you'll realize that the world as you know it will not exist without you...yes...that's how important you are!

My advice to you for right now is to just rest, listen to music, relax, think, and not to worry. You survived. You will live. That's what's important. Let your body take its natural course in healing...do not push it...you have all the time in the world now...take it easy. Keep on doing the things you enjoy, your condition shouldn't stop you from donig most of them. Engage on independant study...don't let yourself get back on your studying. Real, analyze, and think.

That's my adivice to you. I wish you the quickest recovery, and the best thinking of your life, while you're still in bed. If you ever need to talk to someone...i'm an internet adict who spends hours oppon hours on MSN...i'm always here. Just messege me.

Get Well, and know that there is a person in Honduras that cares about ya :)

Sorry, a little slow to reply. Havent been on all week. Sorry Tales. I was wondering what happened to you. I thought school had you gone. That really sucks.

I kinda know how it feels. I had a terrible pane in my side one day. (i was in 4th grade) The doctors thought i had apendicitus(spl) and also thought they may have to remove my appendix. I threw up all the time and could barely move. I didnt eat for like 2 days and i lost 4 lbs.

By far yours is much more serious. Get well. Looking forward to the 'I'm back and i dint die' thread.

BTW, you dont need your appendix to live. :D

Hey guys,

Just by checking back this thread after nearly 1 month and a half and reading it, I must confess I nearly let a tear drop from the corner of my eyes.

Thank you very much from your support. I know I don't know you guys from personally, but I simply felt your replies were sincere and all, not just made-up stuff. Also, thanks for the ones who cared and asked about me thru MSN and e-mail, you know who you are.

I had a good recovery, actually I should have spent one more week resting before goin' back to uni, my first week there I just stayed in bed all day, my stomach was slow to go back to normal.

Regarding school, I was approved on all subjects, except one, Marketing Management. I'll have to do it again next week, but fuck, comparing to what could have happened to me, I'll take it. I shouldn't have problems in graduating at the end of 2004, let's see if I can manage it, though.

This end of year wasn't a good one for me. On Christmas' day one very close uncle of mine died, and my grandfather, who is the 2nd person in this world I love more (after my father), had to have 2 surgeries on the last 6 weeks, had part of his stomach taken out, and is in serious condition. I just hope he can get well enough to live some more years, and hopefully go to my graduation. I would be happy as hell if that happened. Plus, my computer is really fucked up, there is some issue regarding my HD and I just can't use it. I'm in my dad's computer right now. Think about losing all your uni stuff, 5 years of it, researches I developed since 2000 or so... Damn.

I just hope next year, 2004, will be a better one for me. Gettin'a full-time job, graduating on uni, gettin' a real good girlfriend (I need someone to stick to), keepin' my researches on uni, havin' a good family & friends environment, and most importantly, takin' good care of my health.

Thanks again guys, god bless you all.

I know how the family stuff goes. My grandpa died on about the 3rd of January 2003. And this month my grandma passed out or fainted somehow (it's unknown) got cold, and went into a coma. She was in it for about 3 days, but now she's fine, talks, walks (with a cane.) My thoughts go out to you. Too bad about the uni and comp shit. You said Researches, are you a scientist?
