It's negative because your team is over the salary cap. The only way to resolve that is to cut your payroll. Note that released players continue to count against your salary cap until their contracts expire or they sign with another team, so the only way to clear cap room during the season is to make deals with teams who are under the cap, trading your larger contracts for smaller ones.

So you mean I trade a high salary player into a lower one?... is that it?

Yes, but to do this, team that you will be trading players with, must be under the salary cap.

Depending on how far you are over the cap, it could be a difficult task to clear cap room. Note that you can also offer players minimum contracts and the Mid Level Exception. Note that you can only use the MLE on one player in NBA Live 08.

your cap room is actually your players salaries. so if you have a lot of superstars like kobe, kg, and shaq..... they are made around 20 million.... so if you are paying each one of them 20 million then your cap room will be around -$60,000,000. it all depends on wat players you have. hope this helps.

More accurately, cap room is a term that refers to the difference between your total salaries and the salary cap. If the total salaries are less than the salary cap, you are said to have cap room.

In this sense, it sort of depends how much you want the positive to be.
I downloaded a 500 mil cap space file (for every team) because I like having the options.
But if you're just looking for a few numbers above cap, just edit the file instead.

Presuming you're talking about legit, strategy-based methods the most effective would be to take on expiring contracts and gaining cap space at the end of the season. Trading with teams under the cap and giving them higher salaries in return is certainly effective short term but it's not always an option especially after you've taken advantage of it a couple of times (or depending on the deal you make, maybe even just once) since no teams are left under the cap.

a good way to free up some cap space is to release any players that arent any good but are paid alot.... for example, if you have a player thats rated a 62, and he is paid 4 million, release him because he is not going to do anything productive for you and he is just taking up space.

Actually, that's not a particularly good method as a released player's contract continues to count against your cap until his contract expires or he's signed by another team. Even if his contract is set to expire, that won't happen until the upcoming offseason so you might as well hold onto him and choose not to re-sign him.

The way I do it is go to the "Upcoming Free Agents" list and scour for expiring contracts that are big for players with low ratings, and habitually dump these bad contract in the off-season. Or trade 2-3 bad contracts for one good player with a really big salary. And from there on, rely on the minimum free agents and mid-level exception type players to keep my team going. Recently, I traded Beidrins, an MLE pg and a rookie for LeBron James. And since I traded the MLE player away, I was able to sign Rafer Alston. So that I didn't have to think about the salary cap anymore. My team is actually has a -90mil salary cap. Basically, my team looks now like this:

D. Howard/Oden
Gasol/Horford
LBJ/Melo/Marvin Williams
Kobe/B. Roy/
Paul/Alston + simmed player

Exactly, though the downside to that plan is that it's a long term solution. It is ultimately more effective than the quick fix of dealing with teams under the cap and dumping big salaries for smaller ones but as I said before that option isn't always feasible.

Then next step actually is to find a new home for Kobe and Gasol, since they are aging pretty fast. Even if I traded them for decent starters. Promoting the bench to a starting role would still constitute a very strong team. If I am not happy with the players I get for them, then I;d go trade them after a draft to get better players. Eventually, this plan will keep my roster well stocked.

Mind you, when it comes to a player like Kobe he's got a long way to decline so even if you want to keep him around for a few years and then trade him he's still going to have a lot of trade value thanks to an overall rating that should remain fairly high, probably still in the high 80s for a few years after he begins to decline. That's not always the case but you've usually got a larger window for superstar players.
