NY State Megacy: Rebuilding, Renewing & Reviving

Postby The X on Thu May 15, 2008 10:57 pm

Hey guys, I'm just going to use this thread to post updates every now & then on my legacies. For the legacies, I wanted to pick schools and pro teams that I thought had fallen on some hard times, but had in the past either being championship material or thereabouts. I also wanted them to be in one city, although I couldn't find the right mix of teams, so I extended it out to the state level. Some of the teams should be easier to rebuild than others. Some might be damn right hard, but I like the challenge.

The teams that I chose are as follows:

College Hoops 2k8: Syracuse Orange
NBA 2k8: New York Knickerbockers
NCAA Football 09: Syracuse Orange
Madden 09: Buffalo Bills/New York Jets (TBD)

Obviously I don't have the two gridiron games that are still yet to be released & I probably wouldn't have them both for another few months at least, but I just thought I'd let you know my intention. Obviously, if both games stink, I probably wouldn't buy them, I'm just hoping that the games put out are good. I hope to run this megacy for a while, as with the college hoops 2k series now dead, I don't plan on really buying anymore sporting games for a logn while, as I'm very happy with the patched versions of the two 2k bball titles.

I won't be doing numerous &/or regular updates, as mentioned before, it's more just trying to keep chronicles of seasons played. I'll obviously be simming a good portion of games (maybe 1/2 of college hoops, 2/3 nba, but not so much with shorter seasons of gridiron).

At first, I'll be doing just 2007/08 Syracuse bball season, as I need to complete that before I can export draft classes to my 2007/08 NY Knicks bball season. Hopefully in time, I'll be running 2 bball/fball dynasties concurrently, but for now, until I get the other games, it'll just be one at a time. Such is life when you can't export draft classes until you complete the season.

As always, feel free to comment &/or discuss if you wish.

Enjoy,
X

Have started my Syracuse men's basketball legacy. My roster to open the season is as follows:

STARTERS:
#21 C- Arinze Onuaku, Redshirt So, Lanham (MD)
# 5 F- Donte Green, Fr, Baltimore (MD)
#11 F- Paul Harris, So, Niagara Falls (NY)
#23 G- Eric Devendorf, Jr, Bay City (MI)
#10 G- Jonny Flynn, Fr, Niagara (NY)

BENCH:

#33 G- Scoop Jardine, Fr, Philadelphia (PA)
# 0 F- Rick Jackson, Fr, Philadelphia (PA)
# 1 G- Andy Rautins, Jr, Jamesville (NY)
#12 F- Kris Ongenaet, Jr, Ghent (Belgium)
#45 C- Sean Williams, Fr, Villa Park (CA)
# 2 G- Justin Thomas, Walkon Jr, Los Angeles (CA)

I am currently trying to recruit a PF and PG, although will take other positions if talent and interest are there. Aside from some 4 & 5 star prospects that I'm in recruiting wars for, I am also trying to recruit a 6'3" SG from Syracuse, NY by the name of Andrew Watson. He is a 4 star recruit who is ranked 49th in the country and 16th at his position. Whilst I have already offered him a scholarship, Watson seems to be leaning towards playing for the Virginia Tech Hokies, who have also offered him a scholarship, in the ACC. Although there is still time yet to catch up to the Hokies.

4 star PG prospect William Sit (ranked 47th in country and 17th at his position) is highly interested in our school, but he's lack of size (5'7") really doesn't fit into the team's plans, whose recruiting priorities are athleticism and size. Not to worry for him though, as he has Maryland and Villanova also recruiting him, as well as a scholarship offer on the table from Old Dominion.

Meanwhile 3 star PG prospect Travis Toon (ranked 280th in country and 90th at his position) has strong interest from Atlantic 10 schools Fordham (Smush Parker starred there) and UMass, although it's any guess where he will end up.

we all have egos (especially Will  ) so should be interesting to see how far as career lead us....it's more of a sidebar on legacy rather than main focus like some....

With the insertion of The X and Sit, this is already better than 99% of active dynasties right now. (Y) (Y) (Y)

ORANGE OPEN UP SEASON STEADILY, RANKED 24TH IN NATION

The Syracuse Orange (6-2), ranked 24th by the Media's Poll and 18th by the Coach's Poll, have started the season steadily, with resounding home victories over Siena (71-59), Fordham (73-48), UMass (83-63), Tulane (76-56), Rhode Island (81-64) and East Tennessee State (95-57). The only blemishes were a 2nd Round Pre-season NIT loss to Saint Joseph's (59-72) and a road loss at Virginia (56-78).

The Orange have been led by strong play from freshman forward Donte Greene (14ppg, 7rpg, 1spg), which included a 30pt, 11reb & 2stl performance in his debut game against Siena. Sophomore forward Paul Harris (11pg, 7rpg, 2.5spg) started the season slowly but is picking up pace, as he has averaged 16ppg, 10rpg and 4.5spg over the last three games. Reserve freshman 6'1" combo guard Scoop Jardine (7.5ppg, 2apg) is also providing strong play off the bench.

STEPHEN CURRY LEADS DAVIDSON OVER GOLIATHS

Sophomore guard Stephen Curry led Davidson (4-2, 2-1 vs Top 25) to two huge victories in the first month of the season, over UNC 82-71 on a neutral court and at UCLA 82-81. I'll be keeping an eye on Davidson to see if they can knock of any other big names.

EARLY SEASON SIGNING PERIOD COMES UP SHORT FOR THE ORANGE

The early signing period wasn't kind for Syracuse as they missed out on their number one target, 5-star, All-American recruit 6'10" PF Brooks Sargent from Brooklyn (NY), who would've gone a long ways to securing the Orange's frontcourt depth well into the future. Sargent ended up committing to Georgetown, who is renowned for it's production of quality bigs, including Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo. Whether he ends up as the next great Georgetown product is another thing, but the 13th ranked prospect in the nation, will surely have a big impact for Syracuse's Big East rivals. Combined with two other good to very good prospects that Georgetown picked up, and the rest of the Big East might be playing catchup for years to come.

Syracuse's second target was hometown 4-star recruit, 6'3" SG Andrew Watson. However in the end, Watson chose the Virginia Tech Hokies of the ACC. Whilst Watson's body and game would've probably suited Big East play more than ACC play, Watson liked the opportunity to be able to step in straight away and contribute for the Hokies.

Syracuse missed out on another few 4-star PF recruits from around the country as they already had their scholarship offers tied up in bigger prospects, and instead had to settle on adding two 3-star recruit forwards.

Committed Recruits:

PF- Rubin Mohammed, 6'8", Richmond (VA), Prep Rank = 331, 3-star recruit, Potential = B+
SF- Latece Nabors, 6'5", Nashua (NH), Prep Rank = 343, 3-star recruit, Potential = A-

It seems there is a strong likelihood that Coach Jim Boeheim will redshirt one of these prospects, probably most likely Nabors, given that the team is covered at that position with Greene and Harris.

Not all is lost for the Orange as far as recruiting goes, with one scholarship still to be given, they are currently the favourites to secure the commitment of 5-star, All-American recruit, 6'1" PG Velmar Jacobsen of Staten Island (NY), who has had famous duels with 47th ranked 5'7" PG William Sit since they were freshmen. Jacobsen is a top level recruit, but they'll have to hold out Villanova, UNC and Ohio State if they want him to ever wear an orange uniform.

Even if Jacobsen signs with another school, it is believed that Boeheim's staff is looking at a 6'3" PG D'Jamal Doyle from Freemont (CA), who is ranked 85th overall in the country. The fact is that given his size and athleticism, Doyle may actually be a better fit for Syracuse's program than Jacobsen.

RECRUIT SIGNING NOTES FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY

The number 1 overall recruit, All-American and Mr. Basketball of the State of Colorado, 6'2" PG Jerry Dixon of Denver (CO), committed to Arizona. The Wildcats' program is a renowned guard factory for the NBA, producing such college stars as Gilbert Arenas, Mike Bibby and Jason Terry in more recent times. Dixon will be an immediate impact player, and if Bayless sticks around more than a year, and if Lute Olsen can convince Budinger to return for his junior campaign, this could truly be a special team that dances all the way to the title.

The Memphis Tigers signed the 3rd ranked prospect in the country, 6'2" PG Raqul Fellows, a local product out of Memphis, Tennessee. This is another big coup for coach John Calipari, who keeps the state's Mr. Basketball and All-American in-state. This signing indicates that the Tigers don't expect super freshman Derrick Rose to stick around past his freshman season.

4-star recruit, 5'7" PG Will Sit of Staten Island (NY), ranked 47th overall, committed to Old Dominion (CAA) during the early signing period. This was a surprise as both Maryland (ACC) and Villanova (Big East) had strong interest in Sit, but Old Dominion was the only one of those schools that was willing to put a scholarship offer forward for such a diminutive guard. I wonder if it would've been better for Sit to wait it out until off-season signing period and some of the bigger schools might've come to play. Either way, the CAA just got a nice prospect.

3-star recruit, 5'11" PG Travis Toon of Queens (NY), ranked 280th overall, was a late signing by Fordham (Atlantic Ten). Interestingly enough, Trav is in for a fight for playing time as Fordham also got commitments from three other PG's, so something has got to give.

------------------

Hey guys, in case I didn't mention it before, I am simming every second game I play to keep the seasons moving. Once I get to it, I'll probably sim 3/4 of my NBA Association too.

cheers, I fixed up that mistake, I had written thing without knowing recruit's name, but I added it, but forgot there. I'll blame my sickness, as have been sick the last week.

cheers, yep, tis a tad ambitious....but I liked the idea, so I'll run with it....unfortunately Boston C's & New England Pats were too good to choose that city/state

I think I'll go alright with it, but it's a long term project, but this thread is as much as keeping me informed of what's gone on as informing you guys....I'll get some pics up every now & then, but due to it not being on PC, it's always a bit more inconvenient to do so....I'd say this thread will get quiet during my professional studies (Sept to early Dec) but pick up in times I'm not studying, like right now....

as always, I'm keen for some suggestions, or if you guys want any specific info or stats & I'll check it out for you....

Struggle city at the moment guys, the team has fallen to 16-11 (7-9 in conference play). I'm unranked & a bubble team. I have some good wins, like a home & away conference wins over Georgetown, but also bad losses (home & away losses to South Florida, home loss to St John's, road loss to DePaul). My RPI is solid at 29 & currently I'm projected as a 10 seed in the tourney, but it just takes some mid-major conference getting multiple bids due to top team not winning conference tourney & I'm screwed. I'm 1-4 in last 5 (win vs G-Town, losses @ South Florida, Louisville & Notre Dame & a heartbreaking home loss vs Pittsburgh). As you can see run home has been tough games except for South Florida which I blew.

My final 2 conference games are at Seton Hall (a simmed game) which is a must win. If I lose this, I think I'm headed to NIT like real life team did (N) The other game is vs Marquette, who is a top 5 team & fighting for a number 1 seed in the NCAA Tourney, so that is tough. I'm probably going to split those 2 games & end up a disappoint 8-10 in conference play which would suggest I would need at least 2 wins in conference tourney to secure a ticket to the Big Dance....

I'm going to have to call the Big East the Big Beast from now on....it is the top ranked conference in the country, you have teams like Marquette (top 5), Louisville (top 10), G-Town (top 15), Providence & Notre Dame (top 25), not to mention teams like Pittsburgh & Villanova....fortunate for me, UConn is having a horrid year, but they should bounce back in future years....

whilst discussing the Big Beast, Patrick Ewing Jr got injured early in season & has been lost for the season with a broken patella or something similar, so he's a medical redshirt, so G-Town is a little weaker than originally expected....

SYRACUSE MEN'S BASKETBALL 2007/08 SEASON SUMMARY

Just as soon as the Syracuse Orange's (21-14) season was looking up after getting by 10 seed Providence in the Round of 64, the draw seemed to open up for the Orange to advance to the Sweet 16 as the 2 seed West Virginia Mountaineers drop a close game to 15 seed UC-Irvine, although it wasn't as much of an upset as expected due to the key injuries to star junior forward Joe Alexander and guard Alex Ruoff. 3 seed UNC would be waiting in Sweet 16 for an epic matchup, unfortunately it all came crashing down as the 7th seeded Orange of the Midwest Region got upset and thoroughly outplayed by a senior-laden lineup by 15 seed UC-Irvine Anteaters in an 11 point loss that showed the team's glaring weaknesses, that have been popping up all season long.

Then again, the Big Dance was not looking less than a month prior as the team sat periously on the bubble at 16-11 (7-9). In the final 2 regular season games the Orange showed heart, with a 71-70 win at Seton Hall and a tough loss against 5th seed in nation Marquette 67-76. That left Syracuse ending conference play at 17-12 (8-10) and the 9 seed in the conference tourney. Surely the team would need at least 2 wins in the tourney to improve their at-large bid chances. The young Syracuse lineup did not disappoint as they won a sensational overtime affair over 8 seed Villanova 92-89. The game looked almost over in the 4th quarter with 'Nova up by 2 points with under 10 seconds to play. They inbounded the ball and freshman PG Jonny Flynn somehow got a hand on the ball and knocked it clear. Then from nowhere, sophomore forward Paul Harris pounced on the ball and drove it in for a game-tying dunk to send it into overtime. In a see-sawing overtime, it wasn't decided until freshman forward Donte Greene stepped up huge. Down 87-89 with only about 20 ticks left, he stepped up and with no hesitation hit a huge trifecta to put the Orange up 90-89. On the ensuing Wildcats' possession, Greene came out of nowhere and used his wingspan to block a Scottie Reynolds layup attempt. Jonny Flynn would seal the game with two free throws, as the Orange lived to fight another day.

After gathering momentum late in the Villanova game, the Orange would roll through the Big East conference tourney as they pick up the scalps of top seeds Marquette 66-64 and beat a very tough Georgetown team 60-57 to advance to the conference finals. Whilst they would lose to an inspired West Virginia outfit (playing without Joe Alexander and Alex Ruoff) 73-83, the Orange, now sitting at a more respectable 20-13, had done enough in the conference tournament to be well and truly off the bubble and in the Tournament.

Overall, it was a relatively successful 2007/08 season for the Orange. With such a young and inexperienced lineup (no seniors and only one of top 7 players was a junior), there were the expected lumps on the way. At times, the team looked and played like a Top 10 team, at other times, they played like a bunch of unorganised kids. Outside of the last game of season, Syracuse finished the season strong and with no departures (Donte Greene elected not to test the NBA Draft waters) and a more experienced squad, with two to three recruits coming in to strengthen the depth and versatility of the squad, this team should compete for Big East honours with the likes of Georgetown, West Virginia and Villanova.

I have a feeling that Big East Freshman of the Year and member of the All-American Freshman and All-Big East Freshman 1st Teams and All-Big East 2nd Team, Donte Greene, will have a big say in how far this team goes.

Image
With Greene goes this team, if he can be consistent that is. He will remain at Syracuse at least one more year. Lets not waste it.

NCAA TOURNAMENT

The 2 seed Tennessee Volunteers came out of the West Region to beat 3 seed North Carolina Tarheels of the Midwest Region in the Championship game.

The Volunteers earned their way to San Antonio by beating teams like Georgetown (Sweet 16), Arizona State (Elite Eight) and Notre Dame (Final Four) who somehow find a way to topple 1 seed Kansas (my favourite to win it all) in the Elite Eight.

The Tarheels earned their way to San Antonio by beating teams like Xavier (Round of 32), UC-Irvine (Sweet 16), Wisconsin (Elite Eight) and Michigan State (Final Four) who had previously toppled number 1 overall seed Marquette (they shouldn't have been though, KU should've been) in the Round of 32.

The Cinderella story of the Tournament had to be 7 seed of the East region, Davidson. They had qualified into the Big Dance on an at-large bid after being stunned in their conference tourney final, with an impressive resume that included wins over UNC and at UCLA. As the bracket opened up for them, Davidson danced all the way to the Elite Eight behind stellar play of sophomore guard Stephen Curry. Unfortunately Michigan State was too tough for them in the end, as they fell one game short of a historic trip for the program to the Final Four.

NIT TOURNAMENT

UCLA, probably the team who had the most grievance with missing out on the NCAA Tournament after a 9-9 record in the tough PAC-10 Conference, didn't let it bother them as they ran the table all the way to Madison Square Garden, as they won another trophy for their collection (although not the one they wanted) by beating upstart New Orleans, who beat some pretty good schools on their way to the Finals.

For me, I guess the most surprising decisions were from OJ Mayo and Jeryd Bayless. Although Mayo led USC to a losing season, which didn't help his stock, so he is returning to hopefully lead USC back to the Big Dance. As for Bayless, he lost most of the season to an ACL injury, so he had no choice but to come back and rehab that knee and try again next year.

------------------

Just a side note, I've now just started my Knicks' Association. Boy do they suck. It's going to be a long season. Btw, draft class importing isn't accurate to real life, so guys like Beasley and Rose might not be in lottery, but such is life I guess. It's not perfect, but it'll have to do. Once I get past first year of draft classes, it probably won't bother me.
