HOW DO YOU PATCH? I mean im having a diffcult time understanding the basics . Can anyone help?

like say for instance ive downloaded and patch the nlsc roster release right. But i try downloading maybe a basketball court and it doesnt work because its a RAR.file or something like that. Im guessing you need a DBF file in order for these patches to work right? So can you help me get started if you will thank you.
