Live2004 graphics and gameplay vs ESPN

Postby bloodrage4 on Thu Oct 30, 2003 1:10 am

I read all the reviews on both games so I rented the games from blockbusters and this is what I think.

You guys who say espn graphics and game play is better then live all just made me waste $6.00 renting this espn bull.

I never played a 2k game before because am a CPU gamer and we only have live. You guys were going all crazy saying espn graphic are the best in any game.

NO WAY! You guys meant to say they have the best-cut scenes graphics in the game after a play.

The in game graphics are not better then live at all. I don’t care about cut scenes after a play I like nice graphic in the game as am playing the game, doing cuts scenes I push the X button to skip them anyway.

All you guy talking about the good thing about espn talk about the bad like.

1. Why every time I try to do a cross move over in the game am called for a charge. (I'm just going between my legs with the ball)

2. How can I put this in a nice way was up with the free-throw system OMG the worst ever in any game am not playing around.

3. Where is the spin move in the game?

4. Why does the AI jump when you give them a pump fake playing on superstar? (Live fix this in 2004)

5. When you hit the dribble button, the player with the ball start doing all these moves you don’t have any control over him until he's finish.

I can go on and on. I'm writing this because after all the reviews, I have read about both game the person writing the reviews always have more then five things they don’t like about LIVE and only good things to say about ESPN. .KEEP IT REAL.

I own both games and and enjoy both of them...but you are very biased....towards Live 2004....how are you actually going to say that Live's graphics are better than Espn's are you blind (i.e. Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles) Are you blind Stevie :? ....Wow :x please stop making these comparisson threads all of them need to be locked...No one cares about your preference....the Live vs. Espn discussions are so tired...so please drink some prune juice and let that shit go!!!

Biased am not. You have to understand I never played any 2k-bball games at all before I rented espn.

I was reading you guys reviews on both of the game and decide the job gave me a free playstation2 and nbalive2004 has not came out on the pc yet ill try both games.

I was all excited because I was going to play something different then Live for the first time. (And from the reviews a better game then Live) maybe my hopes were up to high for espn.

Because the different you see I don’t. The only different I see is in the cut scenes after a play or before the game start.

But as far as all ten of the player on the court running around at the same time, Live have the better graphics to me.( I said to me)

My friend who play the 2k games don’t even like the damn game. Him and I played Live from 12:30pm until the 76er and Heat game last night.

Then you ask if I was blind nice, you should know the different between cut scenes and in game graphics.

And can you please tell me how the hell you shoot freethrows on the damn game, talk about that.

You have a guy like Dirk 0 for 10 from the line realistic my ass.

I would really like to know how these games stack up also, because Im going to buy one this weekend. Ive only played each game a couple times, and here's what I can tell so far.

ESPN:
-faces are amazing
-lots of charges on crossover dribble, but in the long run this might be a good thing if I can get better at using this move and knowing how to use it.
-FT system is stupid
-very easy to block shots
-very easy to icon pass to players under the basket, even if they are being defended (though this might be because I am doing something wrong on defense)

LIVE
-Pro hop was exploited by both me and my opponent
-easy to block shots
-seemed faster than ESPN (not sure if this is good or bad)
-much better commentary

From all the magazine reviews Ive read, ESPN has the much better franchise mode, which could be the deciding factor for me. Still, if the gameplay proves to be drastically better in LIVE Ill go with that.

Anyone have constructive responses?

First of all (to the person who posted this topic); have you spent at least a month or 3 weeks playing the game? I doubt you have!

U see that's the problem with most gamers, they want to pick up a game one time, and inspect within an hour to know everything about the game. U say everytime u crossover u get called for a charge? Make an adjustment and try something else!

The difference between Live and 2k is, 2k is true to life basketball... it isn't live 2003 or 2004 where u can come down the court and crossover everytime; in the 2k series all the teams play differently just like in real life, u can't play fast paste with the Jazz, like u do with the Mavericks, and so on...

If u give the game sometime, and learn, you'll see that 2k is better than nba live; and i'm an nba live fan.... I've owned every single nba live except 2004 so far.... and i've only played nba 2k2, and i can clearly say 2k2 alone to me, was better than all the lives I've played... nba live 99 to me was the best nba live, and i've yet to see better!

And clearly nba 2k series is a better looking game than nba live, not to mention... i've read reviews and even people in this form has said that live 2004 graphics have gone down from last year... so if 2004's graphics is worse than 2003, i doubt Live 2004 is a better looking game than NBA 2k4?

But it doesn't matter how much graphics a video game has, it's all about the gameplay and realism; and that's why 2k ihas been on-top for 5 years striaght now, and still is, and probably will be on-top for a long time!

I will give you that ESPN is an okay game but it just feels to me that they took a step in the wrong direction this year. This is coming from a long time Sega bball fan that only switched to Live this year.

There is NO WAY Live's graphics are better than ESPN at least that is for consoles not for Live PC. Like one poster said you must be blind. However, the player animations of Live is better than 2k3...the whole 10 man freestyle really makes you believe that it is kinda real. As for gamplay it all comes down to preference. Live has improved dramtically but Espn is still a better sim but not to the extent like last year where 2k3 blew Live 03 away. It is much closer this time but Espn still has the edges. The features in Espn are also better. Live has better presentation. Overall it all comes down to preference. I have been a loyal Live player for years and an avid PC gamer so although I DO think that Espn is a better overall game I still play Live 9 times out of 10.

I own both for ps2.

I don't like ESPN's graphics AT ALL!!! the faces and their bodies don't match... they look weird, almost spookey. They tried too hard to be realistic, and IMO, it doesn't work for a video game. I also don't like the animations when players are running. They are stiff as a board and it feels like you can only move in 8 directions even though you're using an analog controller. Also, not having any control over dribble moves and whether to do a layup or a jumpshot feels really lame now.
The atmosphere in ESPN is just too weird. The stadiums and crowd noises aren't varied enough. it's supposed to be a realistic sim but it just feels, i don't know, unfinished or something... the play by play is sooooo weak after playing Live. I swear Tom Tolbert said the same thing 8 times in one game... "no one is gonna confuse this guy with an offensive juggernaut...." come on! that is TERRIBLE!
oh, and not being able to edit players numbers is just inexcusable in todays sports games. (i could have missed this option though, but i looked and looked and looked).

Live's graphics, although not hyper-realistic, are more appealing to me. I think the cyper faces are good enough, but i don't really care, cuz i use the zoomed out press cam. The courts and arenas are far better than ESPN's.

I'm not saying that Live's graphics are technically better, but i prefer looking at Live than ESPN.

I will say this though... I like the court size in ESPN better. the scale of players:court size seems more acurate. it feels like you have way more floor to work with.

1. Why every time I try to do a cross move over in the game am called for a charge. (I'm just going between my legs with the ball)

Sorry if the learning curve doesn't suit you well. And if you do the crossover right then you won't be called for a charge, though I'm sure that "every time" is higly an exageration.
2. How can I put this in a nice way was up with the free-throw system OMG the worst ever in any game am not playing around.

Yes, the free throw system poses as a challenge to many, which is why you must get better. It's harder than Live's but who doesn't like a good challenge? You can always turn "Freethrow Help" on which will make it so you only need to press the shoot button, and it goes in depending on the percentage of the shooter.
3. Where is the spin move in the game?

Press turbo while doing IsoMotion or "B"(Xbox) or "Circle"(PS2). If you had played more of the 2K series you probably would've known that.
Why does the AI jump when you give them a pump fake playing on superstar?

Must not be on Superstar because the AI defense is really good on that level. It might fall for it if you do it at a good time but that's all.
When you hit the dribble button, the player with the ball start doing all these moves you don’t have any control over him until he's finish.

The IsoMotion thumbstick is much better than the dribble button, so I recommend that you use that. The moves are different depending on which way you turn or point the thumbstick.[/quote]

I highly doubt that you've even played 2K4, judging by that response.
