Tallest player unable to dunk?

Postby Leander on Tue Apr 08, 2008 1:35 am

Who is or was the tallest player unable to dunk?
I don't mean unathletic guys but who really cannot get as high to dunk although they are tall.

The opposite would be Nate Robinson and Spud Webb. The smallest player being able to dunk.

Who is tall and can't dunk (-> can only make layups), e.g. 6' 6'' or something like that.

Shawn Bradley had a lot of moments where he couldn't dunk. It was pathetic to watch.

I'm not sure what the answer is to your question, but the first person who comes to my mind is Larry Bird, but he was physically able to dunk. Just not often.

What the hell is with all these questions about tall guys and their capabilities? This may be one instance where we just need an "Official Tall Guys Fetishist Thread" or something.

Jason Kidd can still dunk. When he was in college he was actually quite an impressive dunker. I cba to search for a youtube link right now, but try searching for Jason Kidd College Mix or something an you'll see.

I remember reading an interview with Jeff Hornacek (sp?) where he said he had never dunked in a game, not even a practise game, and he was arounf 6'4 as far as I remember.

This is an impossible question. Even if a player never dunks in a game, how do we know he is unable to dunk?

Yes but if you are as tall and have arms as long as this guy, it's even hard to believe that you can never dunk in an actual game.

Since we can only speculate on a player's inability to dunk, an easier task might be to name players taller players who you would expect to dunk when the opportunity arose but rarely did. Stacey King would be a good example of that, he was 6'11" but seemed to prefer to lay the ball in rather than dunk. There's nothing wrong with that, two points is two points, but it's noteworthy since players that size generally get there share of dunks around the hoop, being a high percentage shot and an effective weapon.

Some of them came up being taught not to dunk. All the old timers could dunk, but didn't because of the stigma attached. Both Wilt and Kareem had been told by other coaches to not dunk, it was considered bad sportsmenship, then when they could, they went on a couple dunk sprees just because they could finally do it.

Wasn't it the same when Julius Erving was in college? I believe the NCAA had placed a ban on the dunk at the time, in addition to the general stigma that you mentioned.

I was just reminded of that:
Someone mentally challenged, through copy and pasting, wrote:Dunking was banned in the NCAA from 1967 to 1976. Many have attributed this to the dominance of the then-college phenomenon Lew Alcindor (now called Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) upon his entry into the NCAA. Subsequently, the no-dunking rule is sometimes referred to as the "Lew Alcindor Rule."

Kinda off-topic, but what does cba to search mean? Is cba slang for something that I'm missing?

I don't know, its hard to know since I don't know why anyone would just say "Yeah I can't dunk", or how that would be brought up. Plus many veterans who can't or don't dunk now, could probably do it when they were younger...

Heck, Even now Nique Wilkins still has hops. He can still jump straight-up vertical below the basket to dunk. I think I saw it in a feature about him and his journey to the HOF.

Just random trivia.

How about the shortest player that can dunk?

Nate is 5'7'', can Boykins (5'5'') or Muggsy Bogues (5'3'') dunk?
