To all Live fanatics: can you explain why ESPN/NBA 2k suck ?

Postby valrond on Wed Oct 22, 2003 7:53 am

I've been a live player since '95 till 2003, last year game was horrible, and here have been many reasons why it was. However, nobody says why ESPN sucks, maybe because it's quite real and you don't like real basketball in a game.

Here's a theory, mabey people hate on other basketball games like ESPN because they never make a PC version and we can't patch them. I think the reason people have stayed loyal to EA is because they give us a platform to improve their games through the PC version. Through the amazing work of some of the patchers here on this very website EA is able to
gage what people want to see in basketball video games. We beg and plea (PLEASE PUT IN A DUNK CONTEST!) and on occasion we see our ideas implemented. If it wasn't for the success of NBA Live there would be no ESPN or 2k series. Or if they still made those games they probably wouldn't be as good because through NBA Live's trials and failures (3pt contest) they've manages to see what works and what doesn't to keep a game entertaining. Just take a look at the history of NBA Live and see how it's drastically changed both in graphics and in gameplay. I guess their is a history factor their too. With NBA Live and the Madden series EA and us go waaaaaaay back unlike ESPN it's just hard to turn your back on them.

I will admit however that change can be good but not in this case. One company I did turn my back on after so many years of loyalty is Nintendo . They refused to grow up along with their customers and now they are paying the price with Sony taking all their teenage-adult demographic. :x

espn basketball is gonna be a great game.... haha.. there i said it. :D

anyways, personally, i like both 2k's (or espn) and live.... they're both great games. i've played and had sooo much fun with both previous versions(lucky me); while some may dislike one or the other, depending on your playing style. but i'm more in favor towards live series because i have had more history with them. not that i hate espn basketball.

also, this is a live fan site. so, there's gonna be a lot of favortism towards live games and, perhaps, some dislike towards its rival game, espn basketball....

as we well know, it's pretty damn hard to make a fan NOT to dislike his team's rival... :D

I'm just glad this topic was first replied by an articulate and reasonable person like Redbulls and wasn't turned into a pointless bashing of the sega series. :)

I really have no opinion on espn basketball because I've never played it, but I heard it's quite realistic. And I really, really, really, want a realistic basketball game. If espn ever came out for the pc (which I think will never happen), I would definitely try it.

After playing 'live etc' since lakers vs celtics I found live 2001 a HUGE disappointment, so I decided to give ESPN a go, and quite fankly found it dull. The last two versions have been by far superior to live in gameplay and graphics, and the dynasty/franchise mode was so far ahead of live it was laughable. But in saying this, there was something about it that didnt inspire me like live has always done. I didnt want to play a lot, and once I did play I found myself quite bored mid-game, and often turned it off. I even ended up buying inside drive for my sisters x-box. I cant quite put my finger on what it was, maybe slower gameplay, less variation in play, not sure, but it didnt have the life of live. And now that live seems to have woken from their slumber a little, I am very happy to be back..

This is pretty much a flame waiting to happen...and should be in the 'Other Games' thread anyway...

No one said 2k sucks. People here like Live. Adults can like one thing without hating the other...

I dont think the espn basketball game sucks...im just loyal to live due to the many many years ive been playing the series and the fact that espn basketball isn't ported to the pc. The espn fanatics are the ones saying the nba live series sucks.

Im not loyal to either I just like a good ball game, which in my opinion neither gaves have really done. I am looking for a basketball game on the line with madden. I tearn for the day people stop saying why can't Live be like Madden and instead, why can't Madden/NHL be like Live.

However I have yet to play either Live or ESPN.

I just know that in Game Informer ESPN got a 9.5 and Live got a 8.5...

Then again I am not one to agree with most of the review magazines do, I'd wait for IGN or Gamespots review.

One thing is for sure Live'04 gameplay kicks ass! I think live'04 got a lower rating because of the VERY POOR DYNASTY mode.

you really cant compare nba live 2004 PC to espn because ESPN is not for PC if ESPN was out for pc then we could have compare. I would love if sega put espn for PC but that will never happen...like everyone else i prefer basketball on PC...so SEGA (N) EA (Y)

I kind of like the 2k series but live more. Mainly because of freestyle. NBA 2k3 had a serious lack of fastbreaks. The d got back at unrealistic speeds. Tim dDuncan would beat kobe up the floor. I still prefer live though, for now. I havent played ESPN NBA Bball yet.

I played the ESPN, and it does not have the EDIT NUMBER feature. I traded Arenas to Orlando just to test it, and he has "0", problem is, Drew Gooden is also "0," so now there are two players with the same damn number. NBA does not allow the same number on the same team. How stupid!

No retros or 3rd jerseys either, but they said they can be unlocked. There are also all-time teams to be unlocked. But why do I have to unlock it, it should be available right off the bat. The Magic only have 12 players in the roster.

Those unlockable stuff is typical console sheit that us PC users don't need. And EA even tried it with NHL series in the form of all those "cool" player cards, but let's just say that I haven't seen those cards around since.

ESPN 2k series cannot compete with Live until it comes out for the PC too. Case closed. Live reigns supreme.
