Assign a PLAYERPKG so that the player will utilise the portrait update, but do not change the FACEID to -1 in appearance.dbf.

From memory, that's all you need to edit. If that doesn't work, try changing the ISCREATED attribute to False but leave the FACEID assigned by the game in appearance.dbf.
