Boston Officially Signs Cassell

Postby Not Me on Fri Feb 29, 2008 9:24 am

The Los Angeles Clippers today waived point guard Sam Cassell.

In 38 games played this season, Cassell averaged 12.8 points, 4.7 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 25.7 minutes per game. In his 15th NBA season, Cassell had missed the last four games with a sprained right wrist while missing 12 games earlier in the season with a strained left calf.

“After weighing all of the options and after conversations with Sam we believe this is the best solution for this team,” stated Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. “We know and appreciate the many contributions Sam made during the last three years, and we wish him nothing but the best.”

Cassell notched his most productive season with the Clippers during the 2005-06 campaign when he tallied 17.2 points and 6.3 assists while helping lead the Clippers to within one game of the 2006 Western Conference Finals. During the Clippers’ 2006 Playoff run, Cassell averaged 18.0 points, 5.8 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 33.7 minutes in 12 games played.

This just in...sprewell decided that the league minimum of 400 thousand dollars a year is enough to feed his kids and rejoins the knicks. The team he wanted to finish his career in.

They're nothing new though. I think it's a noble gesture to grant a player like Cassell his release so he can sign on with a team that has a shot at winning a championship. Of course, Cassell already has two rings which not every player in a situation similar to his can boast.

I'll pick Boston as well.

The thing I don't like is that Cassell is looking for a team that already has a good chance of winning so he can ride them to a ring. I'd rather see him go to a contender where his presence could actually boost the team.

I wouldn't totally say he's riding along with a team to a championship if he does join the Celtics. Yes, he'll be on for the ride with the big 3 leading the way, but I think Cassell would actually play important minutes and an important part for the Celtics.

Where else could he go though? San Antonio picked up Stoudamire to backup Parker, so there's not many minutes there. Phoenix has Nash and Barbosa and even if Barbosa was to spend more time at shooting guard, the Suns generally use a very short rotation. He'd be in the rotation if he went to Detroit or Dallas but in Billups and Kidd they already have point guards who are going to be getting most of the minutes. Most of the contenders are set, one way or another, at point guard.

In Boston, he could still see some significant minutes since House is more of a shooting guard and Rondo, while looking like he could be a fine player, lacks Cassell's experience. Of all the frontrunners, Boston is likely to offer him the most prominent role and can make the best use of his services.

With his injuries, I don't seem him getting many minutes, anyway.

Most of my gripe is because I am a Clipper fan and his presence on the Clippers helped boost the team to one game from the WCF just in his first year with the team. Instead of sticking around for next year when Brand and Livingston get back, he sees an opportunity for a championship in what could quite possibly be his final season. I can't say I really blame him.

The good thing that comes out of this is just like the good thing of Al Thornton that came out of the Brand injury. A spot opens up for another player to get some playing time and thrive. The Clippers signed Andre Barrett from the D-League to fill that spot.

I understand that Cassell's leadership and experience can really help Boston in the playoffs and that he will get to play with KG again. I would like to see him go to the Cavs.

So, if Cassell is not signed today, he won't be eligible to play in the playoffs, correct?

Good for you. It's a good thing to share one's own opinions and not just repeat/quote what others said.

I think you're right. They really need a backup plan if Rondo injures "him".
Whoever "him" is.
