Favourite Mortal Kombat

Thu Jan 31, 2008 11:20 pm

If there's any other Mortal Kombat fans still around, which was your favourite game in the series? I've only included the main canonical releases that dealt directly with the storyline that was carried over from game to game. I've also made MK3, Ultimate MK3 and MK Trilogy as one option because they were all pretty much the same game/plot with different characters and a couple of different features here and there.

I'm kind of torn between the two eras. I know the series' return to its dark roots in MK4 and Deadly Alliance was widely popular but I've always liked the cartoonish, over-the-top stuff they were doing circa Mortal Kombat 3, with Friendships and Babalities providing some comic relief. That generation of the MK franchise was a lot of fun back in the day.

However, I do really like what they've done with the series in recent years, expanding the storyline further, giving characters deeper backgrounds and making the MK universe much bigger. To that end, Deception is one of my favourites because of its long Konquest mode that has a timeline that's somewhat flawed but weaves some of the established storylines together. They've come a long way since the story was basically seven fighters trying to defeat a four armed monster and an evil sorcerer who were running rampant over an ancient tournament to determine the fate of all existence.

Armageddon was a fine game too but the lack of bios has bothered me since the game's release since it left a lot of holes in the ongoing MK saga. It was cool to have such a huge roster of kombatants but since many of them were killed or otherwise unaccounted for in previous instalments their presence in the tournament went unexplained, except for the fact that they were all part of a huge group of kombatants whose battles were on the verge of bringing about the apocalypse. Also, the Kreate-a-Fatality feature was alright but I would have preferred the traditional character-specific fatalities, since that's always been such a big part of the game.

I think I'll have to cast my vote for the MK3/Ultimate MK3/MK Trilogy instalment though. It also wins points for the supreme fatality demonstration available after beating the game on the hardest level. :)

I'll take UMK3. Haven't played the newer ones 'cause I don't have a console or friends.

Which is why you should get a console. Everyone who doesn't have friends gets a console. Duh.

Uhm, I guess I'll pick MK2, that's the only one I really ever played. I had MK1 on Gameboy, but yeah...Killer Instinct kicked that one's ass.

It's MK1 or 2 for me. I'd say the first one because I was about 5 at the time and my older cousins were playing it, they used to know all the fatalities and stuff so I thought they were awesome. Number two because that's when I started playing it alot and memorized all the moves and fatalities for Liu Kang and Shang Tsung. Overall I think I'll pick number 1 since at that age I was genuinely scared when I saw Goro for the first time

Id pick MK3 i used to like the Robots Cyrax and Sektor but i was also a fan of Jax :D damn those metal arms rocked! Sub Zero is also awesome, this makes me so eager to go dig these games out now.

I'll gonna go with MK3 because it was the first Mortal Kombat that I have played and after that, I haven't played the next series of MK.

MK Trilogy was the best of the 2-D MKs, Armaggedon the best of the current series. All the fighters at your fingertips - that's what I want.

I definitely liked Armageddon for that reason but as I said I missed the character specific fatalities since that's always been a staple of the series. The lack of character bios and whatnot was a bit of a letdown as well after they'd continued and expanded the story arc in Deadly Alliance and Deception. It felt like they missed a chapter between Deception and Armageddon.

Apparently the new Mortal Kombat will feature a full set of new characters and a new storyline, I'm not sure if this will be any good but if some of the new characters have ties to the classic ones then it might be o.k i suppose, still cant beat the originals though.

new characters & new storylines usually turns into an unpopular game. just look at Street Fighter 3.

I go with Mortal Kombat II. I enjoyed countless hours playing that in my Sega Genesis. The 3 ninjas (Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Reptile) rocked along with their fatalities. I was even amazed at the graphics. Memories...

As long as it somewhat follows the events of the last game a new story arc wouldn't be so bad. Hopefully some of the popular mainstays like Sub-Zero and Scorpion will still be around.

Mon Feb 04, 2008 10:25 am

Man I sucked so bad I only knew two fatalities. One with Scorpion and one with Sub Zero.

Scorpion would take off his mask and burn you (easiest combo ever) and Sub Zero would freeze and break you. The other guys did some nasty shit I could never do. Still dont know Liu Kang's bicycle kick of death.

Mon Feb 04, 2008 12:15 pm

That was one move they definitely improved in the more recent games in the series, Liu Kang's bicycle kick. Back in the day you'd have to hold low kick for five seconds which wasn't always convenient (nor did it apply to the CPU who could perform it at will) but in recent games it's involved a more user-friendly combination.

I only played one MK, the very first one I think on the SNES/

So that's my favourite.

On the topic of MK, favorite character? For me is Sub-Zero.

Mon Feb 04, 2008 6:48 pm

MK I or II?...such a tough choice but for sheer character and move selection im going with MK II (and the fact i couldnt beat goro cuz he could fucking block sub zeros freeze and scorpions harpoon). I remember me and my buddies used to be so good, beating shao kahn with ease. Now i play the thing on emulators and i die on the 2nd round...ah nostalgia.

Favorite characters: Once again a tough Choice: liu kang was spammers paradise, Shang Tsung could do any move, Sub Zero freezes people for fucks sake, and scorpion's "get over here" is immortal. Katana's fans, Jax's arms, hell even Baraka's claws...but Sub zero gets the nod solely because blue is greater than yellow and his freeze moves were more versatile than scorpion's harpoon: although there is way too many of them.

My vote goes to Sub-Zero as well.

My favourite MK is MK2. Because it's my first MK and loved it so much.

My favourite fighter is Sub-Zero as always.

MK3 Kabal was wicked - a combo machine. Too bad they toned him down after that.

Favourite character is kung lao....shaolin kung fu expert and then the bruce lee rip off guy comes second. Favourite of the series goes to the last one...simply cause it has all the characters ever and some nice gameplay mechanics. I refuse to fall into the crowd of mk 2 bandwangoners.

Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:24 am

Chalk up another vote for Sub-Zero. (The ninja version, not the without ninja mask version.)

No matter what happens though, I still love Noob-Saibot's name. (Sub's brother.)

Thu Feb 07, 2008 11:54 am

Mileena? MK2?

Cyrax and Sektor? MK3?

Sub-Zero? Pfft. What cheap move does he have?

I'm pretty sure, MK2 is the "only right answer" in some places if you want to get out alive.

Thu Feb 07, 2008 7:20 pm

I was probably the lousiest MK player back then among my friends but, I'll take MKII and Scorpion, barely over MK1.
