There's been tips on clearing cap space posted several times before so you might want to search around a bit, but here are the basics.
If you want to clear cap space without editing any files (ie. do it the hard/challenging/legitimate way), there's two basic strategies. If you want to try and clear cap space immediately, your only option is to find a team that's under the cap and make trades that see you dumping your highly paid players to that team and taking on cheaper players in return. This usually means taking on lesser players so that the CPU will accept the deal but if you're looking to sign expensive free agents then it doesn't matter.
The other way is to wait until the end of the season when player contracts expire and come off the books. To maximise your cap space, you can make deals for players with contracts that are set to end in the upcoming offseason, getting rid of any unwanted players with longer contracts in the process. When the offseason comes, those players will be gone and you can choose not to re-sign them, instead going after the expensive free agents.
If you want to make any moves in the current season, you'll need to go for the first strategy.
