One year later and all those pwnsome light patch makers still have a rather akward and ridiculously misleading idea that this has -anything- to do with 'next generation' or in some other patches case 'xbox' lighting.

It's not. All it does is leech ambient shadowing out of the picture making it a less visually appealing image that does not do at all what actual ambient occlusion and global illumination shader solutions do.

Gwah.

Yeah, I agree, but it's a limitation of the engine. I tried to get the lighting to hit the players' edges from above/behind to more resemble "xbox" lighting. It just is not possible, the light source is the players themselves.

There is no way to get accurate "next-gen" lighting. You can only just make the players more or less glossy.

As I explained it a year ago, there's a very core difference here between what current generation lighting does and what next generation lighting does in terms of shaders.

Current generation uses simple direct light shading. Next gen lighting uses HDR environments or shader ambient occlusion to simulate a better lighting dispersion in the scene. This means that if in current generation you need either more lights or increased maximum shadow darkness to bring out the details in the shadows, in next generation it's not necessary and it's shaded simply according to environmental lighting or ambient occlusion shading (I'm not sure which Live next gen uses, but it's one of the two, both give basically a similar effect in terms of lighting).

Just by eliminating shadows -on player model- does not mean it's next generation. All you do is make the characters glossy and shadowless. Just look at those screenshots, it's not better it's -different-, a delusion of desperate modder trying to get more hype by calling it next-gen.

I came to this thread hoping to find someone actually finding some bits of the next generation lighting, and instead found this fake mumbo jumbo false advertising.

HEY MAN,sorry about 'fake' next generation...in 08 or 07 ..we can't do next generation lighting...nobady can..nor jimmy.nor jaosming ..nor any one..so the patch name is 'next-gen'..it just a name..so if you really find the next-gen patch and HDR with 08..tell me please..!
