Official NBA 2K8 Thread

Talk about NBA 2K9 here, as well as all previous games in the NBA 2K series.

I never got into lives dynasty mode because you have to sign agents, coaches, and a bunch of shit i could care less about. Plus the gameplay sucked! Ive been playing Association and its fun, gameplay is great, and after 9 games im still interested. Now i play on 10 minute quarters, so its similar to nba games. It seems i can practice if i want, i can do all those extra things "IF" i wanted. But i dont NEED to. The only thing im having a bit of trouble with is Morale. Bogut, shaq, and now penny keep going lower and lower no matter what i do. They dont tell you why they are having low morale. Its like "find the answer, though we wont give you ANY hints as to what would make thier morale higher" game. I honestly dont know. I had shaq at 70%, then i said i wanted him to be the start of the team and it stayed the same. So i put it back to your spot is solid, and no one will take it and he jumped to 77%. Morale just seems so random. Unless im missing something. Other then those 3 players, my teams morale is high.

^ I think morale is low because Shaq and Penny is on the same team ;)

Actually i found out if you click the RS in on a player in your roster it shows their morale, what they are set at, and a comment from their agent saying how happy they are. I guess it was because they werent getting enough minutes. But i only took them out because they were getting tired. :? But im moving to a minutes rotation that the cpu will do by itself. So i dont have to worry about getting minutes for each player.

I saw that the home retro jerseys for orlando, for whoever wears a #6 has a white spot in the circle of the 6. Graphics error! LOL.

By the way, is there anyway to unlock more retro uniforms? How Orlando doesnt have their old blue pinstrips is a good question!

Not sure if this would apply for ps2 but....

A quick video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKrtsxZogsc

And a cheat sheet.
Here's a summary for everyone:

Isomotion Moves list for 2K8:
________________________________________
Note: “stick” refers to left stick and Isomotion Modifier is Right Trigger.

Basic Crossover. flick the stick to the side opposite your dribble hand. No trigger required.

In and out. You can do this with any crossover, including the hesitation crossover, and the stutter crossover. Immediately throw the stick back towards the original dribble hand. So if the balls in your left hand, attempt to crossover right, but b4 the ball actually touches the ground, throw the stick back left. No trigger is required for this.

Step back dribble. This is a pretty easy move, and it can create a little space between you and the defender. No trigger is required, simply flick the stick opposite the direction you are moving..

Size up moves. Tapping the L trigger while standing in place will activate a size up move, which can be chained into a drive or crossover. Tapping the R trigger while standing will also activate a stutter size up move, which can also be chained into a drive or crossover.

Stutter. tap R, and from there you can do a stutter cross, or a stutter drive. Tap R, then hold, and move the stick towards your dribble hand for a stutter drive. Tap R, then throw stick towards off hand for a stutter cross.

Step out/Side step move. This is used to sorta step out and drive around a guy who might be a little too close. You have to be moving to do this. Tap L while moving, and your player will attempt to step out and go around his man.

Spin. This can be a little trickier for some. If you do it correctly, it'll always work. This also does not require the use of a trigger. The easiest way to learn the spin, is to chain it with a stutter drive. So stutter drive right, with the stick held down hard right, spin the stick hard left, be sure to make a circle motion, or it wont work.

advanced moves that require the trigger

Behind the back. This done the same exact way you do a spin, except your holding R to execute the behind the back.

Half spin. You do this the same way you do the step back move, accept your holding the R (flick stick opposite of moving direction).

Double crossover. done the same way you do the in and out (start a crossver, throw stick back to original dribble hand) accept you hold R.

Hop Step/Spinning hop step. To do a step back hop, press triangle or Y while on the perimeter. This creates a little space so that you can possibly get an open jumper. A regular hop step when driving inside, is simply done by pressing triangle or Y. To do a spinning hop step, you hold R and press triangle or Y..

Hesitation crossover - Hold both triggers & flick the stick in the direction of non dribbling hand

Post Moves:
Spinning out of the post is done by holding R and flicking the left stick in the direction of the dribble hand. To turn your back to the basket, and have the defender lean on you, press L, when the players back is turned and hes in the post position.

Triple Threat Moves:
To activate triple threat moves, you hold both trigger. I beleive, once you move a foot, the opposite will be the pivot, so pay attention to that.

Protect ball is done by holding L and R and holding the stick back, you can explode out of this by flicking left or right, and releasing both triggers at the same time.

Jab step is done by flicking the stick opposite the direction of your pivot foot, exploding out of this is done by releasing both triggers, and flicking left or right.

Step in/ step over. Flick stick up to step in to the defender, flick stick towards pivot foot to step over. They are basically the same move, step over takes up more space though.

Other Info:
By the way if you guys switch your controller layout to “Config A”, you will have the B button for "Easy Iso".

EZ Iso:
Crossover = Tap EZ Iso
Behind the back = Hold LT + Tap EZ Iso
Regular Spin = Double Tap EZ Iso
Half Spin = Hold LT + Double Tap EZ Iso
In & Out = Tap EZ ISO + left stick toward ball hand

call for pick = Hold LB, select the player you want to pick for you (use D pad to switch the players) and tell them to "Set Screen" (I think its B)

Alley oop = LT plus pass.

NBA 2K8 - Breaking Down Your Defender

Basic Moves

Basic Crossover
Nothing fancy. No trigger required, just flick the stick to your off-hand to quickly shift the ball to your other hand. Effective for separation if you opponent is overplaying the ball-side.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In and Out
This modifier can be applied to any crossover including the hesitation crossover and the stutter crossover. Instead of switching the ball to your offhand, the player fakes the motion and keeps the ball in his original hand. This is done executing a crossover and flicking the stick back towards the original hand before the dribble. No trigger needed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step Back
Get used to this move because this is what you will be using the majority of the time for spot up shooting off the dribble. To execute, simply flick the stick opposite the direction you are moving. Again no trigger. This is most effective when you realize that the drive isn't there.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Size Up
Tapping the left trigger while standing in place will activate a size up move. This can be chained into a drive or crossover. Tapping the right trigger while standing will also activate a stutter size up move, which can also be chained. Effective to draw the defender closer before you explode.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stutter
To do a stutter, you simply tap the right trigger. From there you chain to a stutter crossover (tap right trigger, then hold, and move the stick towards your dribble hand) or a stutter drive (tap right trigger) then flip the stick towards offhand for a stutter cross. Great move to create separation after you have set up the defender with your basic crossover and drive.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step Out/Side Step Drive
You have to be moving to execute this move. Simply tap left trigger while moving, and your player will attempt to step out and go around his man. Use this move when your defender is too close to recover.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spin
Another move you will find yourself using often. To execute the spin, rotate the stick to toward your offhand. This may take some practice to perfect in full stride. This also does not require the use of a trigger. Great way to blow by a crowding defender or get separation for a spot up.

Advanced Moves

Behind the back
Behind the back crossover. Executed just like the spin except you'll need to hold down the right trigger. Effective when your drive takes you too far wide as your opponent's momentum will be going in the opposite direction.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Half Spin
The complement to the spin move. You do this the same way you do the step back move, except you need to hold the right trigger. If you have setup your opponent properly, he should over compensate when he sees the spin starting
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Double Crossover
Executed the same way you do the in and out except again you will be holding the right trigger. If the crossover is your move of choice, use this move to occasionally catch your opponent overplaying your first move.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hop Step/Spinning Hop Step
Not as effective as last year's version but should help you create space in close quarters or slide past a double team. To initiate the move just tap the Y or triangle button. To do the spinning variety, press the Y or triangle button while holding down the right trigger. To do a step back hop, simply press triangle or Y while on the perimeter.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hesitation Crossover
Similar to last year's version but it is much easier to execute. Simply hold both triggers while flicking the stick in the direction of your offhand. Like the basic stutter, this is a great move to create separation after you have set up the defender with your basic moves.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Protect Ball
This is done by holding both the left and right triggers and holding the stick back. You can immediately chain this into a drive by flicking left or right, and releasing both triggers at the same time. Again, this is effective to draw an overzealous defender in or draw a foul on defenders that like to reach.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jab Step
Compliments the drive. The Jab step is done by flicking the stick opposite the direction of your pivot foot. Like the protect ball, you can immediately chain this into a drive by flicking left or right, and releasing both triggers at the same time. This can be used for spot-up shooting or as a hesitation drive.

It's nothing like freestyle. Don't try to do too much or you will hate it. Use practice mode and try some simple sequences over and over until you start to get it.

Or change the control scheme to the one where the B button is "EZ Iso" (Isomotion). Then you can just tap it to do a move. This replaces "Get Open" which you can still do by holding the left bumper, selecting a player with the right analog stick, and hitting the corresponding option on the HUD.

Question - do you have more than 1 choice of headband in this years game?

I hated playing with knicks at home with white headbands and now live 08 pulls that same bullshit !

Honestly. . .There's this thing called the excitement factor. And I played NBA 2k8 then played Live. Live was so boring compared to 2k. I love getting frustrated playing a game. . I don't really get that frustration playing live. . meaning you feel more "In the game" when playing 2k. I mean the ref would make a call, and I'm like WAT THE FUCK. . and the player on the screen is reacting the same way as me. . .it's unreal lol!!!

I'm in love with this game, it just feels so real. I don't know, I wish EA were able to create such a great gameplay for NBA Live series. I mean, the graphics are better in NBA Live 08, no doubt, but when the game is running and the players are moving NBA 2k8 feels smooth and real while NBA Live 08 is a cyborg's battle.

By the way, I'm being constantly creamed by CPU's backdoor passes and it seems to be very little I can do to prevent this kinda plays. Someone said in another forum it can be significantly reduced by increasing the Def Awareness to 75. Has someone tried this??

LOL. . I have defense awareness turned all the way up. . .some teams are clueless on how to play in Defense in NBA 2k8. Sometimes there's a 24-4 run in games, doesn't matter who you are playin' . My brother picks the Spurs and it's hard to beat him, cause the game is so cheat

Scotty, i too have been waiting for the 26th. However just out of curiosity i called up EB and they confirmed for me that they have been selling it since Monday

Hopefully picking it up tomorrow. Not sure if i want to trade 2K7 in for $50 or however much they give me. Like, i happily would of before, but a few dodgy reviews have scared me a little. 2K7 was the best fun i've had with a ball game since Kobe's courtside and maybe Jam 99. Even though 2K8 will most likely be an expanded version basically, i think i will keep a hold of 2k7 for good measure.

So I've gone to the darkside already. I got 2k8 for xbox 360. NBA Live 08 isn't a terrible game, but sheesh, 2k8 really does beat it in every way. It looks REAL when you're zoomed out. If it cuts in close, it really kind of looks like claymation or something. And the coaches look awful. But overall, 2k8 >>>> NBA Live 08.
