Well, the last 3-4 seasons have been lagging, no arguments there. But this first episode last night was hilarious. Anybody see it?

i remembered that i had to watch it, when it was like 6pm, so clearly i had to wait. so i joined a online poker tournement to kill some time. the next time i looked at the clock it said 8:41 and i was very angry(though it meant i was doing good lol). so i missed it, care to tell me what i missed?

It wasn't bad at all. I can't say it was hilarious like it used to be a few years ago, but there was certainly some good highlights...
I never thought I'd say that, but I'm actually more excited about the new South Park season that starts next week...

I haven't caught it yet but I'm determined to watch The Simpsons until the bitter end, though I haven't been overly enthusiastic about the last few seasons. I'd like to see it run at least 20 seasons though, just to claim the milestone. There's been a few episodes the last couple of years that I've enjoyed, not as much as the classic era but compared to other recent eps.

I watched it and found the opening themesong/chalkboard gags funnier than the entire episode...*shrugs*

I liked the new intro, I wonder if it is going to stay, or if it was just for the premiere. It wasn't a bad episode, but I hope it get's better as the season progresses.

The intro is really cool!! But I think it will be only on the first episode...
Thu Sep 27, 2007 10:22 am
I liked that they updated the intro to reference the movie but I don't see it becoming a fixture. I thought it was quite a good episode as far as the newer eps are concerned. It was still a long way from the classic era which will probably never be recaptured (if only due to the high standard it set) but I was relieved it didn't degenerate into another "Homer and Marge's marriage is in trouble" plot.

question i often ask people, do you think we remember the older episodes of the simpsons as being far better cause they actually were or just cause the bad memories have been lost to time? also, i feel sometimes when you view certain shows at a certain age they are great but as you yourself age the show becomes less funny, or less interesting, even if the show itself is not changing, just you.
for instance i fondly remember transformers being the most kick ass cartoon ever but if i try to watch it now it sucks, i just sit there trying to relive old memories and the show i am actually sitting there watching is nothing like i remember it. another example is beavis and butthead, loved it then, annoying now
anyway its just a question i like to ask people, i personally still love the simpsons but i will agree that they are not as good now as they were in thier prime, however i like them far more now than the first few seasons. well some of the episodes on the first few seasons were good, some were rather boring imo. i like how the show has made marge and lise more interesting. i used to hate the shows based of either of them but now its ok.
oh well i am rambling now

To a certain extent but the tone and the style of the show has changed a lot since that era. There’s always more of a plot than Family Guy but it’s adopted a similar approach with its humour these days, at least in spots. That approach works for Family Guy but doesn’t really suit The Simpsons since that’s not how the show was established. At times the new Simpsons eps rely too heavily on the same plots and jokes in my opinion, namely most of the secondary and tertiary characters being depressed or disturbed and the number of episodes that have ended up being about Homer and Marge’s marriage being in trouble. I suppose holding the new episodes to the standards of the “good old days” is setting the bar really high and I’ve really enjoyed some recent episodes that have avoided the traits I dislike and explored something new (not an easy task after 400 episodes) but in all fairness I wouldn’t place Season 18 at the same level as Season 8, for example.

I've heard a lot of people complain that the Marge and Homer's marrige is in trouble plot has gotten old and stale. While yes, they've used that storyline a million times, every time its done it seems to have a new and original twist. It's always told in an interesting way and the jokes are always fresh.
I know I said that I admit that the quality has gone down, but I am someone that defends the newer seasons more then bashes them.

I still love watching old eps of Beavis and Butthead. Call me retarded, I don't care.

I'd have to disagree there, these days it always seems to be the same routine with Homer somehow upsetting Marge who suddenly questions their entire marriage and Homer quickly smoothing things over with some kind of gesture. Perhaps it's just a case of the current style of humour combined with the fact that Homer isn't portrayed as being as sympathetic a character as he once was diminishing what would otherwise be a good story. I'm just bothered that they keep going that route so often because it's become a bit predictable.

I thought "The Homer of Seville" was pretty good by current standards. I was pleased to see it didn't descend into another "Homer and Marge's marriage is in trouble but it saved by the episode's end by a grand gesture that still feels somewhat contrived" when Marge confronted Homer about not being able to spend time alone.

I wasn't too fond of the way the Maggie subplot turned out as I thought it pushed the boundaries of realism a bit too much and not in a good way, though I guess in terms of her intelligence, resourcefulness and independence it's equivalent to her searching for Marge in "Homer Alone" or the Great Escape parody in "A Streetcar Named Marge". I loved the scene where Bart and Lisa are trying to teach Marge how to use the Internet as it not only reminded me of dealing with customers at work but also trying to help my own parents with computer troubles. The Homer plot was another "Homer gets a new job" angle but I found it enjoyable all the same. These days, anything that doesn't degenerate into a Homer/Marge argument plot tends to sit well with me.

I thought the latest ep was a bit forgettable, nothing overly good or bad about it. This year's Treehouse of Horror sounds promising though.

every year i look forward to the ToH episode. some years it turns out to be a rather big disapointment, but like you said looks like it will be good

I think the direct parodies/references in some of the segments have sometimes hurt them, especially in recent years. The King Kong parody in THOH III is definitely an exception though, one of my favourite THOH stories.

Any thoughts on the recent episodes?
I liked THOH XVIII and "Little Orphan Millie" was alright, "Husbands and Knives" was a bit weak though. I'm looking forward to "Funeral for a Fiend" though, if only because it's a Sideshow Bob ep.

the last few episodes have been alright, nothing really special though...hopefully tonight's episode will be good
Mon Nov 26, 2007 11:19 am
I'm not sure it was this season, might have been last, but I really enjoyed the EverQuest/WoW themed episode.
Thu Nov 29, 2007 9:38 am
It had its moments but the latest episode was disappointing for a Sideshow Bob episode, in my opinion. The way in which Bob swayed the courtroom wasn't as humourous in its eloquence as the previous episode with Cecil ("Brother from another series") and some of the silly gags just didn't work for me. Like a lot of episiodes in recent years, it just felt like something was amiss, even with the presence of a classic character.

The best "The Simpsons" episode in a hell of a long time. The "
life flashing before eyes" parody was epic.
Far more impressive than the movie, by parsecs. The movie wishes it could be as good as this episode was.

yeah this episode was pretty good...did anyone else recognize that the music while they were showing Homer's life before his eyes was the nba "where amazing happens" music?
