Your thoughts on the split?

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

Your thoughts on the split?

Postby Jackal on Fri Jul 27, 2007 2:51 am

Uhm, I don't know how I feel as yet. For now I'm annoyed because now I've got a whole new section to visit and can't just be in General Talk.

Is there any reason in particuliar that the extra section was made? I thought we did fairly well with it being in General Talk. How much more General can it get?

I can't think of any good reason why. There was nothing wrong with general talk including entertainment.

It'll be weird for a while, I guess. It's kinda strange, I don't want the forum to have sections for religion, politics, etc.

Its kind of a hassle to go through so many different threads. Oh well, I guess its just for organization and neatness purposes, but sometimes it feels like there are too many sub-forums in this place.

I suppose its for organization like Its_asdf said. I didn't really had a problem with the movies thread being in the General talk or any other thread that is now in the entertainment talk area.

Though It'll take some time for me to get adjusted to it. Twice now I went to General Talk and was wondering why the movie's thread isn't there.

In the end, its a bit confusing, but its probably for the best.

I don't think it should've been split up. The General Talk forum isn't a busy place on day-to-day standards. I'd bring it back to what it was before, imo.

the question is, is entertainment alone big enough to warrent its own section?it seems like the movie thread could be a section by it self so i dont see the problem. i personally hate going through 15 pages of posts just to get caught up on whats being said so i guess i am good with it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way, meaning, I don't really see the point.

General Talk has spurts when it dies down totally, the movies or shows thread usually serve as a pick me up.

I thought the exclusive use of stickies for movie discussions and the like might be too restrictive. Considering there's been requests for a split in the past I thought it couldn't hurt to give it a try. If worst comes to worst, I'll just merge it all back into one big General Talk section.

My feeling is that we are becoming too reliant on centralised threads like the movies sticky and while they do serve their purpose, I don't think there's any harm in allowing additional threads whenever a new movie comes out. Obviously we don't need umpteen threads on the same movie or topic but my view is that the central threads should be random/general discussion about a broad topic while any threads of significance should be allowed.

That's what I was looking to do with the new Entertainment Talk section. If it proves to be overkill then I'll call it a failed experiment and we'll go back to simply using General Talk for all those threads.

I would have liked the split - a year ago.

I just don't think there is enough traffic here now to warrant splitting General Talk into two sections. The Music and Movies thread are essentially pointless in an Entertainment forum. My reasoning behind it is this. If all we are to talk about in this forum is entertainment, why should such threads exist? In keeping with the essence of the forum, we should be able to have threads about rap, rock, black sabbath, 2pac, or whatever - without having to consolidate them into one thread.

What I am trying to say is this. By creating a new forum for entertainment only, the Music and Movies threads should be done away with. Otherwise, all talk in that forum will be in those two threads anyway. What else is there entertaining to talk about besides music and movies, right?

Well, the sticky threads are in there because I didn't feel it was appropriate to flat out delete them and would be used as general/random discussion threads. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback, I'll see how it goes and like I said if it fails, it fails and everything will be merged back into General Talk. I felt it was something we could try.

I want the way things were.
The concept of Entertainment is also relative. It might create confusion whether to post a topic in the Entertainment section or General Talk

It brings up the question of where the WWE thread belongs. In Sports or Entertainment?

Entertainment I'd guess, given it's a horrible (not to mention fake) "sport". :P

Perhaps, but the kind of topics that belong in the Entertainment section are specified in the forum description. Anyway, I take it the split is not popular so if things don't pick up we'll go back to the old arrangement.
