Maybe what we can expect for current gen graphics?
Opinions are my own.

Ouch...no change...heh. It'll be a while before I get a new laptop with lighting capabilities, so it's all good for me. As long as the go-to stuff is there.

EDIT:...and as long as the interface is more keyboard-friendly, I'm good. That UI kinda reminds me of the stiff mouse-only menus on the PC.

Yeah, graphics look the same. IMO the graphics are fine, the game still looks great on a good PC. If they have basically left the graphics and have gone all out on gameplay, I will be very happy. Assuming the gameplay turns out good, of course.

These screens will probably lead to some "EA DIDNT CHANGE THE GRAPHIC   " posts, but I think this is a good sign. A sign that they have put alot of effort into the gameplay this year.

Well, that's what we thought last year, and that didn't really happen...:?
Hopefully you're right though, I really hope they improved the way it feels and plays, otherwise EA really doesn't learn its lessons.

I don't have a problem with it. I knew nothing would be different, I just hope the gameplay is good and the bugs are fixed and the jerseys look 512x512. If most of the things stay the same format, then most of the patches for 07 will work in 08. Especially the real shoes patch because that shine is killin me. That lighting looks really weird, too.

It's a lot easier to see in the other screenshot:
http://wiimedia.ign.com/wii/image/artic ... 459477.jpg

There's two of them right in the middle of the picture.
but I think this is a good sign. A sign that they have put alot of effort into the gameplay this year.

I think it's more of a sign they just did a roster update and slight tweak...

But I'm cynical.
the game still looks great on a good PC

Meh, it looks pretty lousy even maxed out. Live 2005 still looks good, Live 07 still looks like a major step backwards.

Wait a second...just realized something...

If PS2 and Xbox are considered "Current-gen", I can understand them being phased out in the years to come. But if the Wii, theoretically a next-gen system, is utilizing current-gen graphics, there are only three outcomes:

1. Current gen graphics will remain as long as the Wii remains on the market (and that's certain). Most likely there will still be years of "current-gen graphics" on the PC.

2. Next-gen takes over, eliminating Wii gameplay (which I doubt), and PC gets "next-gen graphics" (generation 8?)

3. Next-gen stays, current-gen stays. PC gets a port of next-gen graphics, Wii still gets current-gen graphics.

or 4, the Live franchise on Wii is eliminated, which is highly unlikely.

Personally, I'd love to see #3 happen, but seeing how EA this year decided to give PC the current-gen port, it seems as if they are reluctant to port next-gen graphics when the choice lies between current and next-gen. And the way I see it, EA will only port next-gen onto the PC if current-gen is totally phased out, which I don't see happening unless they decide to stop developping for the Wii....but god hope I'm wrong.

What do you all think about this?

check out some of the stadiums in 07, the textures that say Live 06 are still in there.

also i believe there was a german site posted that "confirmed" that this year will be current gen, and next year they are going to try to make the jump to next gen.
Opinions are my own.

I hope so, it's hard to watch all those next-gen trailers, then go back to play a lesser graphical game. As benji mentioned, I liked the 2005 lighting much better, it looked much more "next-gen" than the Live we have now.

If that's true, then I will probably skip 08 and wait for 09.

I dunno, i actually hated the 2005 lighting and love the lighting system we have now since we can do so much with the alphas and lighting direction. 2005 had a weird grey haze and when you got rid of it all the players looked "pastel" or like paints.

The only thing that I would take from 2005 would be moving shorts, net animation, and the real time shadows.
Opinions are my own.

if I owned a Wii (which I don't, but I may in the future), I'd want Live to think about maximising the graphics for the system, not just porting it from current gen....if that's the best that the Wii can do, which I doubt, then maybe they should rework the game's graphics for Wii & make them a little more cartoonish or something like that to make it look better, because that's pretty garbage graphics wise....

Well, I guess it's different from a patcher's point of view. Personally, I find the current Live's lighting too excessive, and the shadows a bit too dramatic. If you take a look at the screenshots above, you can see that the players have an unrealistic, and sharp shine on their bodies. In addition, the shadows look like dark smears of paint. Of course, I understand the fact that giving modders and patchers more accessibility to the graphics is a great thing, I just find that, from a player's point of view (having no front-end sliders to tweak the lighting options at all), the new lighting is a bit too harsh compared with Live 05's more subtle shading.

Just my opinion though :). Again, if I had the ability to mess around with the lighting options myself, I'd be a pretty happy camper (too bad I also don't have a lighting-capable card :(, so my judgements are solely based on screenshots from other players ).

*standard complaint about "current gen" and "next gen" usage being wrong*

That said. The question isn't whether or not the game continues for the Wii, but whether it continues for the PS2. The PS2 is still the most popular game console and that's why Live 08 is coming out for it. The Wii version starts as a port, but like Madden it may take on it's own seperate development path instead of merely being a port with new controls. EA has the tools well refined to port PS2 to PC, I doubt converting from (the eventual split) Wii version will be as productive. The change will probably be made to simply use the Microsoft devtools to port the X360 version as that will be the easiest one to do.

If we assume the PS2 is viable a year from now (very likely) then it'll get NBA Live 09 (i.e a roster update and further tweak to the 06 codepath), the Wii will hopefully get a NBA Live 09 that's midway between PS2 and X360 using the old engine but rewriting much of it to better suit the Wii or writing a new one from scratch, then the X360/PS3 version continues with the PC joining those two.

They can't continue the 06 engine past 09 on the Wii, because it'll be five years old for Live 2010. And even I don't think EA's that greedy.

Of course, there's also the possibility for 09 they make a new engine for the Wii version (v4 (or v5) in the 2001/2003, 2004 and 06 lines) and that's what the PC gets. But that seems like more work than it's worth, when you can just port the X360 version so easily.

Ideally, they would copy 2001, port the gameplay/graphic engines of the current gen version and build a PC-centric frontend. But kinda lost hope for that a few years ago...

It's just you. The jerseys look like ass, atleast they appear to be in 512x512 resolution.

The thing I have noticed is the dirty ass ankles and no socks on any of the players.
