Summer '06
Owner James Dolan fires Coach Larry Brown and replaces him with Isiah Thomas. Dolan also relieves Thomas of his duties as President of Basketball Operations and replaces him with unknown "Jason Gold." Gold will have the tile of General Manager, but will have final say in all team transactions.

Isiah is definitely going to still be our Coach right now, but we think its time for him to leave the front office," said Dolan. "We think Jason will be a great fit and I trust him completely. He and I have already talked and we have laid out some new plans to improve the team. He and I see eye to eye on most things already and I'm looking forward to next season. We hope New Yorkwill be excited for the upcoming season and we're expecting to make the playoffs."

On the day of the season opener for the Knicks, new GM Jason G. made a blockbuster deal.

New York Recives:
- SG Tracy McGrady 93 overall, $16.40 million, 4 years left
- PF M. Lampei 62 Overall, $1.00 million, 1 year left

Houston Recieves:
- PG Stephon Marbury 82 overall, $17.28 million, 3 years left
- PG N. Robinson 69 overall, $1.19 million, 3 years left
- SF R. Balkman 65 overall, $1.42 million 4 years left

GM Jason Gold: "The Knicks today would like to announce the arrival of Tracy McGrady, 6-time NBA allstar. He holds a career scoring average of 22.2 point per game and should be able to fill our shooting guard spot nicely. Steve Francis will revert to being a point guard and take the number "3" jersey and Tracy will get number "1". Although we are sad to see Stephon go, we think that Tracy should be able to help us more."

Tracy McGrady spoke to the media just hours before the opener vs. Memphis.

Reporter : What was your reaction to the trade?
TM : Honestly, I was shocked. The Rockets organization never told me that they had any plans to move me so when I heard the news I was blown away. Right now I'm more stunned than anything. I will do all I can to help the Knicks reach their goals, and I'm looking forward to spending the rest of my career here.
Reporter #2 : Tracy! You and Francis were once traded for each other, weird?
TM : Haha yeah that's actually kinda funny. Its a little comical that Knicks would acquired both of us (him and Francis) from the Magic and Rockets, but hey me and Steve are tight. I've talked to him from allstar games and such and it should be fun to play together.
Reporter #3 : Do the Knicks have what it takes to make the playoffs and if so can you reach the 2nd round?
TM : I think so. I loved Houston, but the West is very very tough. Most of the elite teams are there, Dallas, Phoenix, San Antonio and (I like to include) Houston. I think with this team we should be able to easily make playoffs, and hopefully the 2nd round. The East is a lot more unpredictable.
Reporter #4 : Tracy, injuries have always been a problem for you what do you think you can do to stay healthy this season?
TM : Well, this trade should actually really benefit me. The Teams in the East are located much closer together than the teams in the West are. All the teams in our divison [NJ, 76ers, Raptors, Celtics] are all within 30 minute plane rides from each other. Since I will be traveling less, I should be more well rested and any minor injures should heal quicker and have less of a chance to develop into something series. I also worked out all summer and I feel better than I have in years.

Newly acquired swingman Tracy McGrady failed to play like the Allstar he is in his first week with the Knicks. Scoring only 5, 9 and 12 points in his first 3 games, so far Knicks fans must be dissapointed. The Knicks have not bonded together well yet and the team has very poor chemistry. GM Jason G. has told Coach Thomas to hold more team events to help the team bond. Worse yet, starting small forward Quentin Richardson sprained his finger and will be out for 3 weeks, making him impossible to move.
Image

(Real life note: I did not intervene in any games yet, I am working on making more deals and have not focused on results yet. Also the pictures are pretty poor because I did not have my normal camera, I should have better pictures in the future.)

Image
Realizing that the team still was not playing well, GM Jason G. made another blockbuster move the day after the Pacers game on 11/4/06:

Image

New York Recieves
- PF Chris Bosh 88 overall $4.24 million, 1 year left

Toronto Recieves
- C Eddy Curry 74 overall, $10.00 million 5 years left
- C Jerome James 57 overall $5.40 million, 4 years left

"To free up some more cap room and to improve our team the Knicks organization proudly introduces PF Chris Bosh into our Family," GM Jason said. "We are very excited to have Chris play for us and Channing will now slide over to Center. We are sad to see Eddy leave us, since we just acquired him last year and he played very well for us, but we think he and Jerome will thrive in Toronto."

Team analysis
The Trades would be met with raving reviews:
"Wow, James Dolan finally made a good decision; hiring GM Jason G. Jason has really made some nice moves, and although the Knicks have started 0-3, I'm looking for them to be one of the top teams in the league. Francis, McGrady, and Bosh?? I didn't realize it was possible for those 3 to team up, but the Knicks have somehow managed to do it."
- Marc Stein, ESPN.com

"How in the world did they manage to trade Jerome James? James is possibly one of the worst mid-level exception decision ever. Somehow GM Jason G. has made the impossible a reality."
- Mike Wilbom, Pardon The Interuption

"The Knicks have somehow improved their team and reduced payroll, an impressive feat. The Knicks, if they let Maurice Taylor, and Jalen Rose and a few other players go should only be about $10 million over the cap before they resign Chris Bosh, which they should and will do. Somehow they managed to convince Toronto to use up all of their caproom."
- Bill Walton, ESPN analyst

4-0, A Perfect Week
The Knicks, having started the season 0-3 faced a difficult schedule in their 2nd week. Playing the Spurs twice, and then the Nuggets and the Rockets, no one would be too surprised if they went 1-3 or even 0-4. However, the Knicks shocked everyone by winning all 4 games.

In the 1st game against the Spurs Tracy McGrady finally had his first good game as a Knick, scoring 31 points. He was named the Jordan player of the Game. Chris Bosh in his debut as a Knick, would only score 8 points and grab 5 rebounds, but it was his first game and he must have been nervous playing his first game in the Garden as a Knick.

The Knicks then packed their bags to face A.I. and the Nuggets in Denver. Although they were trailing by 4 entering the final quarter, the Knicks outscored the Nuggets by 11 in the final quarter and ended up winning by 7. Steve Francis, would lead the Knicks with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Iverson would score 18 of his 38 points in the 4th, but it was not enough as he received little help.

In the 6th game of the season, Tracy Mcgrady and Steve Francis would return to Houston to play their former team, the Rockets and face Stephon Marbury and Yao Ming. The Rockets, considered to have gotten the worse end of the deal, had he league's best record at 4-1 and had near perfect chemistry. However, the Knicks would embarass the Rockets and led 94-65 entering the 4th. Coach Isiah Thomas elected to rest all his starters except for Crawford in the 4th quarter. Crawford would be named the player of the game.

In the final game of the week, T-Mac would lead the Knicks to a surprising win in San Antonio, their first in 18 years. Tracy McGrady would catch fire in the 4th, nailing four 3 pointers. Ultimely though, after Tony Parker's incredible 3-pointer tied the game at 95 with 7.6 seconds left,T-Mac would race down the court only to be double-teamed. He would somehow manage to find recently acquired Chris Bosh, who would heave the ball towards the basket with less than a second to go. His shot somehow went it, causing the Knicks to run off the floor celebrating Chris' miraculous 3-pointer at the buzzer.

RECAP

Chicago, Ill. - Steve Francis and the Knicks can't stop winning as they won their 13th game in a row. The Knicks outplayed the Bulls for the 2nd straight game with Steve Francis leading the way with his 35 points and 9 assists. Jamal Crawford scored 22 points, Tracy McGrady added 20, and Mardy Collins had 11 off the bench in only 4 minutes.

"Oh man the best part about this streak is knowing how happy our fans are," Francis said. "After all these years of mediocrity, it must feel good for our fans to be part of our winning streak."

This blowout was not as easy as their previous win over the Bulls (when they won 90-64) because the Knicks did not really pull away until the final quarter. Francis' 3 point play with just over 3 minutes to go, finally gave the Knicks a comfortable 19 point lead. Coach Thomas was able to give his reserves some more time, but they didn't play very well. The Bulls cut the lead to 9 with 43.7 seconds to go. However, clutch free throw shooting by Francis sealed the victory for the Knicks.

The game started out very close. For most of the 1st quarter, the Knicks had a 5-point lead, but an 8-0 run in the final minute gave the Bulls a 24-21 lead. In the 2nd quarter, star power forward, Chris Bosh picked up 2 more fouls, sending him to the bench with his 3rd with 4:40 to go in the quarter. Marvin Williams checked in for him and his layup with 1:15 to go gave the Knicks the lead for god, 44-43. At the half the score was 48-47 Knicks. Francis and Kirk Hinrich were the players at the half, both having near identical numbers.

At The Half
Francis: 13 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists
Hinrich: 12 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists

In the 3rd, the Knicks used a 14-4 run, 2 minutes into the quarter, giving themselves a 71-59 lead. However, Bosh picked up another foul and didn't play the rest of the quarter. Coach Thomas elected to rest all of his starters for the rest of third as well, and Collins picked up the slack by scoring all 11 of his points in the quarter. The lead got to be as big as 14, but the Bulls trimmed it to 7 entering the 4th. (87-80)

"I didn't feel that our reserves played well in the 4th," Coach Thomas said. "Mardy defintely contributed in the 3rd, but with 3 minutes to go in the last quarter, we nearly blew the lead. Yes, the Bulls did not pull their starters, but we should have been able to hold the lead. I am slightly dissapointed right now."

"We got the win that's all that matters," McGrady said. "The Bulls are a better team than their record suggests, and I'm sure they will make the playoffs. I'm really pleased though with our current streak, 13 games is it? Wow, we are really clicking right now."
