LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Lakers' season began in the same way as last season ended: a double-digit loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Los Angeles led 75-67 entering the final frame, but Phoenix scored 40 points in the fourth quarter to give LA a 107-97 defeat in the team's first game of the season.

Kobe Bryant led the way with 30 points on an efficient 13-of-24 shooting, Lamar Odom scored 14 points, and starting point guard Jordan Farmar had 10. Off the bench, Farmar's backup Smush Parker scored 15.

Amare Stoudemire led Phoenix with 36 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in a backup role, while two-time MVP Steve Nash had 18 points and 8 assists.

Bynum's crucial block on Wallace.

LOS ANGELES- Vladimir Radmanovic hit a 15-foot jumper off a Kobe Bryant pass with 7.5 seconds left in the game to put Los Angeles up 80-78, and Andrew Bynum rejected Rasheed Wallace's seemingly open game-tying dunk attempt to seal an 82-78 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

It was a close game throughout, with neither team leading by double digits. LA was up 69-68 with 3:42 left in the fourth quarter, but Bryant scored six straight points to put Los Angeles up 75-69. Detroit came charging back, however, and tied the game at 78-78 with 57.2 seconds remaining.

With 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Lamar Odom injured his leg and did not return to the game. Radmanovic got extended playing time in Odom's absence. Trainers said Odom will not miss any games.

Bryant led the Lakers with 27 points but shot a poor 10-of-30 from the field, and dished out 6 assists. In Odom's place, Radmanovic scored 19 points, and Andrew Bynum had a solid game with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocks. Odom had 10 points before he left the game.

Chauncey Billups also struggled mightily as he scored 32 points but shot 12-of-32 from the floor. Rasheed Wallace had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Tayshaun Prince reached double figures with 10 points but shot only 2-of-8.

Nice Dinasty! IMO you can increase the quality of your recaps.
A suggestion: change the gameball with the real one (HERE - Preview)

LAKERS BLOWOUT GRIZZLIES IN UGLY FASHION
Grizzles score 8 in the first quarter, 10 in the fourth

Kobe flies in against two defenders.

LOS ANGELES- Usually in blowouts, it's tough to see one team play so badly.

However, in this case, both teams played badly.

Memphis had only Damon Stoudamire (16 points on 5-of-26 shooting) and Hakeem Warrick (12 points) in double figures. No other player scored more than 8.

Los Angeles wasn't any better.

Shooting 7-of-21, Kobe Bryant scored 19 points to lead the Lakers to a 72-44 win. The only other player in double figures was injured forward Lamar Odom, who scored 16 points on a much better 7-of-11 clip. No other Laker scored more than 8.

"Terrible game, by both squads," Phil Jackson said. "Both teams were getting their shots off, it just wasn't going in."

Los Angeles shot 42.9% while Memphis shot a lowly 26.5%.

Pau Gasol did not play in tonight's game.

BRYANT'S 58 IS TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE

LOS ANGELES - Last time the Lakers faced Toronto on Staples Center hardwood, Kobe Bryant erupted for 81 points as he led the Lakers from 18 points down for a 122-104 victory.

In tonight's game, Toronto led 53-44 at halftime, with Bryant scoring 14 points in the first half. Then, the Raptors feared for the worst.

It seemed like history would repeat itself as Kobe Bryant exploded in the 3rd quarter, eventually tying the game at 73-73. However, late in the game with the Lakers in possesion trailing by two, Lamar Odom was called for a three second violation which proved to be the game-deciding play.

Toronto then pulled away to give Los Angeles a 115-107 defeat.

Besides Bryant's 58, Kwame Brown was the only one in double figures with 14.

TJ Ford, despite 12-of-40 shooting, was the main man for Toronto with 34 points and 14 assists. Chris Bosh also had a monster game with 29 points and 17 rebounds; 10 on the offensive end.

"He's a great young player," Bryant said of Bosh. "Phenominal athlete."

"He almost beat us by himself," Bosh said of Bryant. "He's the best player in the world."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson had no compliments for his team's effort.

"No energy whatsoever," he said. "We kinda just 'went through the motions' tonight. The team was down virtually the entire game, and no desire was shown to actually want to win the game."

The 222 total team points was well over what the Lakers and the Grizzlies scored in their game: 116.

Morris Peterson was injured during the game and did not return.
