Little things

Postby Ruff Ryder on Mon Sep 15, 2003 10:02 am

What kinda little things should the game have that enhances the NBA experience? Is it holding the shooting arm up, kicking that leg out, smacking the backboard, fans holding up signs, cutscenes of the fan cheering? What do you think?

The little thing I wan't is being able to have players wait to sub in at the scorer's table so you don;t have to pause at every dead ball and possibly forget.

One thing that would be tight is taking the NHL approach on cut-scenes. like if it is a call against the home team, then the camera could switch to teh crowd which will be fully 3d fans during the cutscene, and see the disgust on thier faces and maybe even have fans wearing the hometeams jersey, of the best player/player with highest rating on the team.

That's an awesome idea. But, you have to be in the developers' shoes. It is a complicated concept.

One thing I was thinking that would be cool to patch for live, since they'll have 3d fans on courtside(opposite side of the court) maybe we can patch say Spike Lee at Madison Square Garden wearing a Knicks jersey, or Jack Nicholson in LA, Billy Crystal and Penny Marshall at Clippers home games, or my dad at a Wizards game---you get the point.

Real music that you would hear at a game, like the organ at MSG or the Adams Family song in Orlando--would add so much to the atmosphere

Fans reacting to a play, like if someone had a break away or a huge dunk or big shot, the fans get up and cheer louder--or if the Home team is losing big time--have the fans boo or just have the fans boo when the opposite team does something.

When there is a 3pt play, have the players give eachother dap or a chest bump

After the game, have the players congratulate eachother--or have the 2 coaches shake hands before they go back in the locker room

After a Championship, if you win it at Home cover the screen with confetti and have all the players celebrating (they have the celebrating part)--I like how Stern gave the trophy to the player--I hope he gives the trophy to the coach and an MVP trophy to the MVP(not the center all the time)
* if you win it at another court, have a totally different celebration

Have the crowd actually wearing team jerseys, maybe even wearing the jersey of the best player on the team--or new rookie's jersey

I like how the crowd will empty if it's a blowout, or if the 2 teams aren't that great--it won't be a sellout and you can see some empty seats(ever seen a Hawks game)

Bring back signature free throw animations, Kidd's kiss etc..

those are a few that would add to the realism factor for me

I agree totally with cocobee but I'd like to see career stats, and record breakers (most 3 pointers in game etc.) I'd also like to see players numbers retired through the game like if Duncan retires throughout the franchise his number shows up in the rafters.

Man, i've been playing ESPN too--and I love the Half-time show with Berman and the Weekly wrap up show. I like how they even show 1 hight light from a random game that week. Very Cool. When I first saw it, i was like DAMMNNN! If ESPN NBA 2k4 can implement this with NBA2Night (the espn nba show equal to nfl primetime) man--it'd definetly be off the hook.

I'd love to see lots of stats and records. Things such as double doubles and triple doubles in League Leaders, the ability to view stats such as FG%, PPG, etc for home and away games seperately (to see if you shoot better at home or on the road, for example), and of course, career stats.

It would also be cool if you could view, set and break NBA records, as well as career highs for individual players. The ability to retire numbers would also be great.

Other little things...improved substitution in the All-Star game. The substitution pattern is basically the same as a regular game, with the CPU controlled All-Star team giving the starters the most minutes and often only playing 10 of the 12 players.

Before most things, I want the on-court bugs to be fixed. I want to see refs running up and down the court, I want tech fouls, real injuries, etc etc. What ever happens on the court, I want it in the game.

It's always the little things that make NBA Live realistic. And I, along with a few others crave for realism in the game. Whether it be the stats, dunking animation to the crowd, we crave it all. :D

Anyways, here are a few things that I could bring to the brainstorming and hopefully can be implemented in future editions of the NBA Live series.

1) Team MVP - A little icon next to a player's name indicating who the TEAM MVP for the season is so far.

2) I loved the idea of the MVP Candidates in NBA Live 2003 game. But why not do the same for ROTY, Most Improved, 6th man and Coach of the Year.

3) In the Playoffs, home crowds waving thunder sticks or towels to add depth and realism to playoff games.

4) Bring back player introductions, just like in Live 2001. I guess it could be a cut-in scene with players in their respective warm-up shirts instead of having their actual playing jerseys on.

5) Half-time shows are definately a must.

6) Team and individual stats popping up on the Franchise screen. If you have Madden 2004 and are playing a Franchise, you know what I mean. Stats would be on the Top 5 in each category (for example Teams PPG, Teams FG%, Players PPG, Rookies PPG, etc etc).

7) More variety in trash talk. I've always found trash talk interesting, especially when you first play the game.

8) Simple yet innovative High fives, chest and knuckle bump celebrations. Not every player in the L points to the ceiling after making a lay-up. Heck, in reality, a coach will blow at a player for doing that coz they're celebrating instead of having to go back on D. Yet, how awesome would it look for a player to give high-fives to all his team-mates from a potential three-point play?

9) Bench players in their warm-up shirts instead of their jerseys.

10) Madden 2004 has NFL Live Tickers that pop up during gameplay. I just LOVE that idea. Why not incorporate it into Live?

11) I sorta miss NBA/basketball trivia, just like the ones they had in Live 97. Would be interesting if the game could give you an extra point to spend on NBA Store when you get the correct answer.

12) A simple and practical method of adding ditties into the game. It was impossible to do in Live 2003, yet easy to do in Live 2001.

13) Ability to add your own music folder and the ability to play straight off mp3 files. Would be a lot easier than converting those mp3 files into the required format.

14) More variety of dorna ads. I've always loved creating dorna ads. But the max number of dorna ads for a set was 7 or 8? Don't know, but that's not enough. :P

OK, that's enough for now. I know I may just be repeating what I and what others have said, but I just felt like getting these things out in open. But anyway, these are just a few simple things that could totally enhance the NBA gaming experience.

Alright, some might not be so simple, but you can sorta catch my drift.

Take it easy fellas....

I like the Team MVP idea and the having the contenders for the other awards shown. I also want them to bring back the team leaders stats screen that I believe was in 2001. That was nice

4) Bring back player introductions, just like in Live 2001. I guess it could be a cut-in scene with players in their respective warm-up shirts instead of having their actual playing jerseys on.
This would be just awesome, I love the idea of players actually being in their warm-ups, the startup for Madden 2004 (at least the demo, which is all I have) is really nice, it shows players actually throwing the ball and doing sprints. I think the start up should be more focused on players shooting with ball boys rebounding and others at halfcourt streching. That's another idea, ball boys that mop the floor would be kinda cool, but just have them stand on the sideline since you're downcourt by the time they come out and you don't get to see them.

5) Half-time shows are definately a must.
But having gay clips of the cheerleaders in real life from teams would be dumb. Actual simulated games happening that night in the franchise showing up would be oh so cool.

6) Team and individual stats popping up on the Franchise screen. If you have Madden 2004 and are playing a Franchise, you know what I mean. Stats would be on the Top 5 in each category (for example Teams PPG, Teams FG%, Players PPG, Rookies PPG, etc etc).
I would like that to show up in select team, I remember they used to have the team rankings for every category, that was very handy and was useful when I didn't know a lot about all the teams like I do now.

7) More variety in trash talk. I've always found trash talk interesting, especially when you first play the game.
That's another great idea, in 2003 they had an insanely low ammount of phrases. For one-on-one there was "That's [number of points]", there was somehting like "You like that" and that's all I remember.

I would like all that stuff without going to a cutscene. Just on the way back high fiving a teammate would be cool. Although a cut scene for that after a foul at the whistle would be cool.

9) Bench players in their warm-up shirts instead of their jerseys.
If they include warm-ups in the intro they must have this IMO.

10) Madden 2004 has NFL Live Tickers that pop up during gameplay. I just LOVE that idea. Why not incorporate it into Live?
Didn't they have that in Live 99? I never liked it very much anyway.

11) I sorta miss NBA/basketball trivia, just like the ones they had in Live 97. Would be interesting if the game could give you an extra point to spend on NBA Store when you get the correct answer.
I'd get so many points doing that. Great idea again.

13) Ability to add your own music folder and the ability to play straight off mp3 files. Would be a lot easier than converting those mp3 files into the required format.
It takes way too much effort to import your own songs, all that needs to be used are mp3's. I know for THPS it's great because all the graphics are just .png files.

One more thing. Let's not turn this into another thread about

Crowd

Postby Larry Bird on Wed Sep 17, 2003 9:12 am

The crowd needs to be more realistic. They should be deafeningly loud during close games, comebacks, big (or important) plays, and ESPECIALLY playoff games. Especially in places like the Fleet Center where the fans are nuts, booing everytime a player like Kidd or Iverson got the ball and not stoping until they shot it or passed it. If the crowd reactions were fixed it would definitely enhance the atmosphere.

Also, we need more in-game stats. Not after every shot, but a lot more frequently.

Also, player interactions with eachother should be drastically changed. There should be a lot more smack-talking, players getting into eachother's faces, If Ron Artest dunks on Dale Davis, he should give him a little bump as he runs back up the court, or stare him down. Things like that. If I'm the Celtics and Kenyon Martin dunks over Walker, then gives him a bump or talks some smack to him, the next trip down the court I'm going to give the ball to Walker and go after Martin. This could especially come into play when two rivals play, like the Mavericks & Kings, or Celtics and Nets. It could even highlight player rivalries, like Vince and T-Mac, or Player-team rivalries like Reggie and the Knicks. How great would it be if you were the Pacers and you went into MSG, and every time you passed the ball to Reggie the crowd shouted at him and booed, then when you'd hit a 3, Reggie would throw his hands in the air and twirl around as he headed back on defense? How satisfying would that feel?

That's enough for now....

Yeah that's right, they did have it in Live 99. But I think that was for real games that were being played in the NBA (you had to be online Iif I'm right). The live ticker i was talking about was from other games in your franchise.

As far as dorna ads are concerened maybe EA doesnt have legal rights to advertise in their games but they should have nike ea sports, team logos,Other EA games, etc.

Also maybe on breakaways the crowd beginning to stand before the dunk or they boo if you have kobe or t-mac and do a lay-up.

Do you know if there will be some kind of ingame save option???

I rarely have enough time to play a 48 minute game straight. It is a "must have" option. I will never understand why it was possible in Live 2001 and they decided to remove it...

There has been no mention of ingame saves. My guess is that they won't be in NBA Live 2004.
