Have you ever seen a basket ball game...

It is the jump that ends your dribble without causing a dribbling infraction.

When a player comes to a full stop from relatively fast speed. They usually do the pro-hop.

It's a move that's allowed in the NBA but usually not in amateur leagues.

damn...i was hoping that the pro hop made you pick up your dribble and take two steps...not a hop step... :(

Is the Pro Hop that little Kiki Vandweigh step through, which Larry Hughes did to the Lakers in Washington this season past?

If so, I've done it a few times here in Ozzie, and it's been allowed.

Guess it depends on the refs. I was once called for travelling when I didn't even have the ball. That's how the refs are in Newcastle.

Well the refs here in SA (except for a extremely small group) are that bad that I was once called for a foul, even though I was on the other side of the court, and I didn't argue it coz I didn't know it was called on me. And I've been called for a tripping foul, even though I was on the ground first, and the other guy jumped on my back.

I've never heard it called the "pro hop" before EA either...and I've seen it and done it...

It's one of those moves that comes very close to violating the rules so usually only guys like Iverson or McGrady get away with it. They probably shouldn't call it a "hop" because that would make it travelling...it's actually just picking the ball up and taking a big step past a defender. The NBA changed their travelling rules in the past few years to allow a "two count rhythm" of movement after a player picks up his dribble so it's okay. On other levels it probably is travelling.

 That's hilarious. It;s like getting called for a flagrant foul while you are sitting on the bench, watching. (maybe not so good an example but oh well)

I've only heard it called a "jump stop". The way I understand it, is that you are allowed to take a step, then come to a jump stop, but then you're not allowed to pivot your foot.

jump stop

Postby nickjgar on Tue Sep 16, 2003 5:21 am

yeah its called a jump stop. My coach used to make us practice it in high school. You have to do it off the dribble with no steps and you land on both feet at the same time.

But 'pro hop' in this game won't be like a normal jump stop where you shoot. It's instead something you do, jumping in to traffic, hopping off of 2 legs and doing a layup.

The pro hop thing ea is talkin bout was in 2003 as part of a layup animation. you really had no control of when u do it or how it was done but it was there in that one particular layup. As far as the name goes i really dont care what they call it as long as it works well in game as it does in real life.

Vince Carter did this and dunked (360) over Kobe Bryant in a All-Star game a while back.

I should mention that I got a technical foul as a result of that incident.

My apologies for another off-topic post, but what really annoyed me was how inconsistent the refs were. For example, I'd cleanly block someone's shot and a foul would be called. A couple of plays later I'd block someone else's shot but there'd be enough contact off the ball for a shooting foul to be called, and they'd say it was clean. I know it wasn't a make-up call, because that referee didn't like our team.

Sounds about right EG. (Y)

Refs are just people... And they do make a lot of mistakes.

And this is why we should have that "complain to the ref" minigame included into this, that I was going on about a way back. It was a good concept in my mind, but you people really didn't seem to respond to it.

I might get too technical with my text sometimes... But that's just the way it is.

I remember towards the end of a game, my team was up 1, a guy went for a layup, I cleanly blocked it, and was called for a foul, and I yelled "ALL BALL' at the ref, and he T'd me up, so we ended up losing by 2 points, even though I had a chance at a game winning 3, but the ref signalled to the bench to start the clock before I even touched the ball, and no one else had touched it, so we lost.
