I cut the addiction

Postby Axel on Sat Apr 21, 2007 4:00 pm

I'm soda free! I've went nearly two months drinking nearly nothing but water, or the water drink mixes.

I've posted before, and I've been highly addicted to sodas for all of my life. I would drink 3 liters of soda just in the time after school. It was killing my digestive tract, and I could tell within a week of cutting it out that it made a significant difference in my overall health. I feel rejuvenated. Sodas used to give me adverse reactions to eating. I would always get sick after dinner. Now I rarely drink sodas now unless I have no other alternative. In fact, they're so fizzy that they actually make me sick to drink them now.

I know people talk about drugs, but imo sodas and other unhealthy foods are just as bad. If anyone else is considering getting rid of sodas, it's really not as hard as you may think (maybe this is just for me though). I get the 16 oz drink bottles and constantly refill them. You can buy the crystal lite singles, which are drink mixes for a single bottle. Just pour it in and shake. There's so many different flavors, I don't think you could ever run out of different drinks (raspberry lemonade is my current fav).

gl to anyone else who wants to try.

Congrats! It's always good to notice the improvement of your health by simply cutting out something from your diet.

I haven't really drank pop or ate candy for the last 7 years or so. It might sound horrible, but I don't have cravings for it. It was "hard" to quit the first month or two, but after that, I really had no desire to drink pop or eat candy. Pizza, chinese food or hot dogs on the other hand...

As for drugs, never touched 'em.

it really isn't hard to cut out sodas from your diet. there's plenty of other sweet drinks out there to help your sweet tooth. I prefer Minute Maid Berry or Fruit Punch. I'm also trying to drink a lot more water.

Congrats, Axel. Hopefully I can do that sometime in the future. I am definitely addicted to caffiene/sodas, because when I don't have a soda withing a few hours of waking up, I get really fatigued and feel like laying down. One glass or can of soda and I'm wide awake. While I haven't noticed any problems with my digestive system, I know if I replace it with water, milk and/or juice drinks, I should get healthier.

Ketchup - catsup, what's the difference?

Good for Axel though.
I have the same feeling with sodas, I feel bloated even after drinking a glass or two.
I only drink sodas when I need an extra jolt of energy when no other alternatives are around like Gatorade.

Just don't drink it...soda really isn't that addictive. When you start drinking fruit juices and water , you realize how much better it tastes than soda. I'll have a soda every once in a while but I can't stand drinking Coke , Pepsi , or any of those beverages (N)

I drink soda everyday basically, not always a lot but I will have some soda in my diet. I know it's not really healthy but I don't feel sick or bad when or after I drink it. I think I might try to cut down and stop drinking it. I have a friend who randomly became a vegetarian and he has no interest in eating meat (no homo). So I mean if someone can give up chicken and steak and spiedies and stuff the it seems like it wouldn't be that hard to stop drinking soda.

I want to stop drinking soda as well. I've moved from drinking regular soda at home to only diet. It's a step in the right direction.

Congrats on breaking the addiction!

carbonated mineral water is the solution

anyways, can't believe how much sugar water some of ya'll drink. That's diabetes waiting to happen. I drink 90% pure water, and 10% soda and i've been doing that for the past 4 months.

Don't buy them. If your mom buys pop for you, tell her to stop buying them. Have the willpower to stop drinking it. It's not that hard once you actually stop drinking it.

I am lucky because we get natural spring water here. It tastes 100x better than the chlorinated city water.

I started out drinking those Dasani and Aquafina flavored waters. They're still healthy (sweetened with spelnda) yet are sweet enough to ease you out of the soda drinking habit. Carbonation doesn't have flavor that I'm aware of unless you just like belching or something. Anyway, it really is like cy said. Just be determined not to drink sodas. Now for me, I don't even have to think about it. Drink Mixes are good if you cant go to completely pure water. I like the instant lemonade drinks, and crystal lite is really good also. Try water with some lemon juice and a bit of spelnda, and that is really good too.

If you're addicted to the energy it provides, drink tea. I've never been much of a tea drinker myself, unless it is really sweetened. I do like green tea a lot, so try that if you never have before.

edit: thanks everyone!

I worked for Pepsi stocking supermarkets last summer.

But I don't drink caffeine and usually stick to water when I'm at college, mostly because I'm too lazy and poor to go out and buy stuff.

I used to only buy soda at lunch when at school. Now I get chocolate milk. Not sure how much better that is for me though.

Chocolate milk is actually just as good as white milk for you. Pretty much any health type article or story or advice will say that there's nothing wrong with drinking chocolate milk ... plus it tastes good. :P

well, for one, sugar rots your teeth. Stick a tooth into a glass of coke and it will disappear in 2 weeks.

obviously the big one is diabetes because of excess sugar consumption.
Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

I might have to follow your lead Axel, I've been slowly cutting back on my Pepsi Max & Coke Zero, but I think it's time for me to cut them out as you have....maybe just have them when I drink alcohol or eat pizza (& no, that isn't a whole lot these days anymore  )
