This isn't about the latest GTA, but I recently pulled out GTA 3 again (never passed any of the games, figured I would give GTA 3 a shot). The thing that is annoying the hell out of me is the mission where you gotta kill Kenji on top of that car park. The guards have M4's (I think) and they fire super fast and blow up the Cartel Cruiser you have to kill him with in a matter of seconds. I have tried a quick drive by, but they when I go too fast I don't hit him enough to kill him and when I go too slow I get the car blown up. I also tried running him over and managed to kill him, but then I got blown up right after.

Aaaaaargh! :x

That mission frustrated me too, especially since none of the suggested shortcuts (standing one level underneath with the rocket launcher and blowing up his security before running him down to name one) failed to work.

When I passed that mission it was probably a bit of a fluke because previous attempts had gone awry. I just lined him up, avoided the Yakuza guards and ran over him at full speed, driving straight off the roof and ditching the Cartel Cruiser when I hit the ground. If you hesitate on the roof or try to double back and go back down to the entrance you'll get blown up. Just get on the roof, head at Kenji with your foot to the floor (well, finger right down on the button anyway :P) and fly off the roof. The Cruiser will probably land upside down or roll when you land so get ready to bail and sprint away from it.

Get 100 hidden packages and rocket launch the ground where he is located, from a lower level. Easy-peasy.

Well, not really, since you need 100.

I'd just drive up and pray. That's what I did before I heard about the rocket launcher thing. I managed to double flip and had black smoke when I landed.

Sun Apr 01, 2007 9:16 pm

It really is the most straightforward method, it may just take a couple of attempts since if you do get caught up you'll probably take too much fire and blow up. It definitely helps if the Cartel Cruiser is in good condition when you get to the car park. ;)

I beat it! I managed to kill him and get off the roof, but I was on fire on the way down and blew up basically on impact. I gave up and pulled the rocket launcher and shot underneath like 15 times to make sure, and quickly got back in and drove off and it worked. I'm up to the one where you have to kill Catalina now, so I was on a good run after I got past the Kenji mission. This Catalina one wasn't too bad, except I got run over by that army type truck that drives out and failed. I couldn't be bothered trying again just yet.

The only mission that was more frustrating so far than the Kenji one was "Kingdom Come" (?). The one with the vanloads of crazy suicidal SPANK addicts.

If you need help with "the Exchange", check out my hints on Page 2 of this thread. It's a snap if you have Ray's bulletproof Patroit & 100 special packages.

Get the stuff from your hideout with a fast car. It makes things much easier and a lot more fun.

But you're better off with the bulletproof Patriot. That way, you don't have to worry about the Colombians bullets. Just plow through the barricades and drive straight for the stairs leading to Maria.

Make sure you run over the Colombian with the flamethrower.

Yeah, I messed up the quoting.

I'd just use grenades or the launcher to blow through the blockade though.

Admittedly it's not the most challenging way of finishing the mission but I completed "The Exchange" using a tank, which with a little work you can accomplish without using any cheats. All you need to do is complete the Emergency Vehicle crane in Portland Docks. Getting most of the emergency vehicles is easy but the tank is more of a challenge.

To get the tank, you'll need to do a little prep work. Make sure you have at least four police bribes at your hideouts and enough ammo and firearms to cause some chaos; some body armour would definitely make things easier too. The easiest place to do this is Kenji's casino because you can snipe pedestrians and take out any police, FBI agents or soldiers that come after you. You'll also need to be able to get a six star wanted level, which won't be an issue for you since you're already up to the third island.

Once you've got a six star wanted level and the tanks start rolling in, you'll need to take out any soldiers, steal a tank and make your escape. Take it back to your hideout on Staunton, collecting the police bribes and saving the tank in your garage. Then take it over to Portland Docks to complete the EV crane side mission, thus allowing you to get a tank whenever you want.

Completing the Exchange with the tank is pretty straightforward. Just run over/blast anything that gets in your way and hop out occassionally to take out the Columbians on higher levels with a sniper rifle, assault rifle or any other long range weapon.

I tried "The Exchange" with the bullet proof Patriot but when I ran out the mansion to get into it and chase the helicopter somebody stole it

I still nearly finished the mission but when I got up the stairs to Catalina, the Helicopter took off and she was left standing there... what was I supposed to do? I figured I had to kill her? So I shot her and it said mission failed :(

Oh well, I'll try again.

EDIT:    I just realized, I killed Maria, not Catalina!

Anyway I just beat the mission, after I remembered the whole point in the mission - exchanging the cash for Maria. I can't believe I forgot about it. I almost died when I had the pistol in my hand so I could sprint to grab the Rocket Launcher and a random Columbian popped out from behind the box shaped part of the roof and nearly killed me, luckily I switched guns quickly and shot him. Anyone know why there was a gun shot when Maria is talking at the very end?

After I try get 100% in this its on to Vice City, by then I should be able to buy San Andreas and have a go at that.

 I still can't believe I didn't realize it was Maria I killed.

Consensus is that Claude shoots her because she won't shut up. ;)

Wed Apr 04, 2007 1:25 am

 So he goes through all that, pays 500,000 dollars, gets tricked, kills over 20 Columbian Cartel members on the way there to save her and kills her for talking to much? Wow.

I discovered the tricks of using the Dodo tonight, anyone have any good flight times?

Wed Apr 04, 2007 2:25 am

yah, infinity :D

i just got bored one day and got really good at flying the thing. I think it was after they announced Vice City would have copters and planes.

anyway, not that you can fly the dodo you should check out the ghost town

edit, just found a interesting article on wiki about pre and post 9/11 GTA 3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GTA_3#Cuts ... F11_effect

and from gouranga
School children were announced as one of the ped types.

Just checked it out, pretty weird. Also, if you turn right after the ghost town and head towards the hills, everything goes upside down and you hit an upside down hill and light on fire. I might check out the names on the radar part later, thanks for the link.

Wed Apr 04, 2007 3:20 am

really? whenever i go back under the city i dont catch on fire, just kinda drift into "Blue Hell"

Wed Apr 04, 2007 3:58 am

Yeah, I turned right just after I passed the ghost town, then headed towards the hills directly in front - except they were upside down. I figured I would probably go through them because they looked like a glitch but when I hit them it was exactly like hitting nose first into the ground. After I hit them I went into that blue hell thing and the plane spun around on fire, then crashed into the water that came out of no where. I should of recorded it (but fraps probably couldn't record that long).

Wed Apr 04, 2007 6:24 am

About the Maria thing...the theory is that Claude just fired in the air to give her a fright to shut her up. You don't hear the bullet actually hitting something.

And you can Frap anything on GTA. Hell, I got one of my silly flamethrower trick on VC where I took down the helicopter you're supposed to use...

Just speculation, this image came in my EB newsletter today

Think it could be another character for IV?

That usually happens when you park on the sidewalk. Park next to the curb and it shouldn't be a problem.

That's Maria, from the cover of LCS.

Wed Apr 04, 2007 1:47 pm

ah thanks (Y)

Thu Apr 05, 2007 3:19 pm

In LCS, if you go to the cemetery behind the Staunton church, you'll see names of characters Tony's killed on the headstones.

It is just one theory but I do feel it's a plausible one. She has caused him a lot of trouble throughout the game.

I wouldn't say the absence of further sound effects of the bullet hitting something/someone or someone falling to the ground is necessarily proof Maria didn't get shot. As a cinematic technique, it's more powerful to end the story with an offscreen gunshot followed by the closing theme and credits. In any event, I think we can all agree that given the trouble Maria put Claude through and her talkative nature, a frustrated Claude fired a shot at the end of GTA3. Perhaps GTA IV will reveal what actually happened to Maria within the GTA canon.
