Half of it is learning to shoot free-throws on the go.

PS2's new way of shooting FTs (right analog) has to be the most moronic thing that EA has come up with yet.

There's hope, though.

Getting Roy back will help as well.

no. i like the free throws thing. with the old style, the good shooters would never miss because it is soooo easy to do it, but now you can miss if you slip or it is miss timed or you are under pressure.

so i like it

Blazers Fall Off In 4th Again

    Image
Clippers Forward Corey Maggette (#50) was a gunner this
past Monday evening, where he thoroughly drilled the
winless Blazers for 29 points and 5 rebounds. The
former Duke stud shot the ball 33 times, while only
hitting 1 of 11 three point attempts in the Clippers
    113-103 win over Portland.

    Image 103
    Image 113

Box Score: (Click here for Full Team/Player Statistics)

    Game Summary:

After a sloppy start for the Blazers (clanking 7 of their first 10 shots) and a sharp beginning for the Clippers (making 7 of their first 10 shots) Portland eventually got it together by the end of the Quarter, with a late-period run that left them down 5 by the end. Foul shooting was noticeably better for the Blazers though, as they'd bury 5 of 6 shots from the charity stripe in the Quarter, while Clipper forward Corey Maggette and Cuttino Mobley would combine for 20 of LA's 28 points after 12 minutes of play. (LAC 28-23)

The 2nd quarter would offer fans of both teams some serious hype, as the Blazers would make an early run and eventually take the lead off a Dan Dickau three pointer with 5:33 left in the period to set the score at 40-38. Yet sloppy Portland Defense, awful fouls, and landing the Clippers repeatedly at the free throw line (4 of 6 from the line) would lead to easy points for the home team whom would reconstruct a lead as big as 12 pts .. before the visiting underdogs with a fresher line-up to run the final two minutes of the half would explode a 6-0 run, wrapping up the first 24 minutes of play with the Clippers barely maintaining their lead. At the half, Clipper guard Cuttino Mobley would continue to set a pace for a possible 40 points scored, while Portland forward Zach Randolph with 15 would already of equaled his season average with half the game still to go. (LAC 54-50)

Throughout the 3rd, the Blazers would look for real with sharp shooting (11 of 20) and another solid game underneath, with an assortment of fouls drawn to the point of racking up 8 free throw attempts. But while Clippers Maggette (11 pts) Mobley and Thomas (13 combined) would continue to pour in the points, the Blazers as a team would dump in 29 points in the 3rd quarter to LA's 26 .. and utlimately cut the home team's lead to just a point heading into the final 12 minutes of play. (LAC 80-79)

But of course as the 4th quarter would gradually unfold, the immature Blazers would once again save their worst 12 minutes of basketball for the last of the game, with a 44% shooting performance that'd include no trips to the charity stripe, along with a trio of turnovers to the Clippers zero. Young LA point guard Shaun Livingston would score 11 of his 21 pts in the final quarter, while dishing 6 of his game-high 16 assists to the likes of guards Maggette/Mobley whom would combine for 12 more pts in the fourth. 33 pts later the Clippers will of won their first game of the 2006-07 NBA season, while the struggling Blazers would remain winless. (LAC 113-103)

    Reality's of the Game:

Clipper Guards Corey Maggette and Cuttino Mobley would combine for 60 of LA's 113 points scored. The two would also combine for 8 rebounds an da trio of steals leading to fast break points.

LAC center Chris Kaman would play only 16 minutes due to foul trouble, but in his place reserve center Z.Rebraca would grab a game-high 15 rebounds. Also in foul trouble was LAC forward Elton Brand, whom would register just 16 points and 6 rebounds in 33 minutes of play as a result.

Six more Blazers scored in double digits against the Clippers, including guards Martell Webster (10) Dan Dickau (11), Forwards Darius Miles (10) and Zach Randolph (26) and Centers Jamaal Magloire (12 pts) and rookie LaMarcus Aldridge (10).

Young Clipper guard Shaun Livingston registered a career high 16 assists, including 6 in the final period of play. He also scored 11 of his 21 pts in the 4th quarter, en route to earning the Gatorade Baller of the Game honors.

After such poor free throw shooting all season, the Blazers finally climbed back into the ranks of respect by connecting on 83% of their free throws in the loss to the Clippers.

    Game Photos:

    Image
Starting Center Jamaal Magloire of the Blazers (#20)
played tough all game against the Clippers en route to
registering 12 pts (2nd on the team for the game) and 6
rebounds. Magloire also went to the free throw line 4
times, and made all 4. He was a major reason why
Clippers Center Chris Kaman spent most of the game
on the bench in foul trouble.

    Image
Blazers Forward Darius Miles was his usual self (#23)
flying high on the fast breaks and helping out where
ever else. Miles finished the game with 10 points, 5
rebounds, 4 assists and a block to once again chip in
    all over the floor.

    Image
Clippers Guard Cuttino Mobley (#5) pretty much had
his way with the Portland Defense, as he'd score a
game high (for both teams) 31 pts on 11 of 16 shooting,
while making 8 of 9 free throw attempts. The former
Houston Rockets guard also logged a pair of steals
    and assists as well.

Pretty decent Dynasty here. Tough that you have not won a game yet, but I think you just need some time to develope. Looks like you do not have a leader though, which makes it very hard. I remember my Knicks dynasty were I totally lacked of a real leader and always had the scoring load shouldered on many guys which is not always good since you do not know who to give the ball when the clock is counting.

Good luck in your next games !

I think you hit the nail right on the head with the hammer.

I had hoped Roy would turn out to be a leader but he wound up injured in the first game and will not be back for a few more. I think this team right now is a cast of role players at best (nobody over 76 ovr) so I'll likely wait for Roy to come back and play 5-8 games (see if anyone changes their performance around him) before shipping anybody out to shake up the line-up.

    BLAZER'S GAME 5

    Pre-Game Report

    ImageAT
    Image
When: November 8th @ 830pm
Where: The Rose Garden Arena, Portland, OR
Blazers Record: 0-4
Lakers Record: 1-4

Inside The Lakers - ImageImageImageImageImage

Team Leaders:

    Scoring: SG Kobe Bryant (23.0)
    Rebounding: PF Lamar Odom (11.0)
    Assists: PF Lamar Odom (5.2)
    Steals: SG Kobe Bryant (3.60)
    Blocks: PF Lamar Odom (2.20)

Odom and Bryant (obviously) are their top scorers, as both can pretty much get it done from anywhere on the floor. Role players Parker, Walton and Brian Cook are all servicable at what they do, which is getting the ball to the Lakers top athletes. Forwards Cook and Radmanovic (starting) are both tall shooters that can bury the trey. Young centers in Kwame Brown and Andrew Bynum are both highly mistake prone underneath the hoop, but servicable on the boards where they make their living in yellow/purple jerseys.

Portland's Priorities - ImageImageImageImageImage

Team Leaders:

    Scoring: PF Zach Randolph (17.8)
    Rebounding: C Jamaal Magloire (8.8)
    Assists: SG Martell Webster (4.5)
    Steals: PG Dan Dickau (1.25)
    Blocks: SG Ime Udoko (0.33)

The Trailblazers saw an increase in their free throw shooting a game ago, something that ultimately kept them threatening the Clippers two nights ago. Still, the team has to be able to hit shots down the stretch. A leader has to develope at some point. The guards (Webster, Dickau, Udoko, Jack) have to continue to hit their jumpers down the stretch where they matter the most. But most importantly, big men Jamaal Magloire (team-leading 8.8 rpg) and Randolph (6.5) have to do a better job of clearing the glass Defensively, where 2nd chance put-backs by opponents are killing the team.
Look For:

Kobe Bryant to be driven at/around repeatedly in hopes of getting him in foul trouble, on top of being doubled regularly when in possession of the ball on the other end of the floor.

    Blazers Blow 4th Quarter Lead

    Image
Laker guard Smush Parker (pictured, in a 71-72 throw-back)
killed the Blazers in the 4th quarter where he'd score 17 of
his 26 points on the game, including knocking down a trio of
three balls that led LA (down 7 at the start of the 4th) past
Portland to a lead that they'd keep until the buzzer. Parker
also registered 9 of the Laker's 13 team assists on the game.

    Image 107
    Image 96

Box Score: (Click here for Full Team/Player Statistics)

    Game Summary:

Energy was aplenty early in the game for both the Blazers and the Lakers, as Kobe Bryant of LA quickly took the contest's opening tip only to zip up court and bury a three just seconds in. The NBA's best player would go on to score 4 more points in the game's opening minutes, even as Portland guard Jarrett Jack answered with three straight baskets (two lay-ups and a jumper from the elbow). The score would remain close, with the Lakers maintaining a short lead for a majority of the opening quarter until finally a Darius Miles jump shot put the Blazers in the lead at 22-21, with 1:13 left in the period. LA forward Lamar Odom would answer immediately with a three point play that would put the Lakers back up at 24-22, but a minute later with the quarter's end, the game would sit at a tie. (Tied 24-24)

However, in the 2nd quarter the Blazers would begin to capitalize on the Lakers horrid shooting (1st Q: 39% 2nd Q: 32% Half: 35%) with the insertion of guard Fred Jones, a hustler whom would energize the Portland line-up on fastbreak after fastbreak. After trading baskets for most of the beginning of the 2nd quarter, the Blazers would begin to pull away led by transition specialists Jones (4/4 for 8 pts) and Darius Miles (14 pts at the half) and sculpt a lead. Tough Defensive rebounding throughout the quarter would reduce the Lakers 2nd chance put-backs, and by the half the Blazers would sit ahead by 8, having built their biggest lead all year in a single quarter. (POR 53-45)

Playing tough throughout the 3rd quarter, the Blazers would continue their tear on the glass with 11 more boards (42 by the end of 3 quarters). The Lakers in the mean time would continue to run their Offense through Bryant, who would score 8 of the team's 25 points in the quarter, while Center Kwame Brown on a tear would register 9 of his 14 points along side Bryant. Portland would simply continue to feed the ball underneath to big men in Aldridge (6 pts) Randolph (4 pts) and Magloire (6 pts), a trio that would combine for 16 of the Blazers 24 points scored in the period, as the Lakers by the end of 36 minutes would cut the lead down a point at best. (POR 77-70)

Of course it was only a matter of time before the real Blazers showed up to finish out the game, as the typical 4th quarter statistics for Portland revealed themselves while scorer Kobe Bryant went about dumping in 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting, and the struggling Smush Parker an astonishing 17 after a mess of fastbreak points and a trio of three pointers that ultimately started the run that ended Portland's chances of finishing this one ahead, back at nearly the beginning of the quarter. Shooting poorly and literally handing the ball to the Lakers defenders every other possession, the Blazers would watch as their hard-earned lead built throughout three quarters of basketball could disappear just minutes into the 4th before the Lakers went about finishing off the NBA's team with the fewest wins this year. Portland would score just 19 pts in the 4th quarter (on a pathetic 8 of 21 shooting, after shooting above 50% the entire game) to the Lakers 37 and lose in what's become the expected fashion each game. (LAL 107-96)

    Reality's of the Game:

Laker guard Smush Parker would shoot just 2 of 15 in the 1st half before somehow celebrating his birthday at the half, and coming out in the 2nd to bury the Blazers with 20 of his 26 pts.

Portland's trio of towers in Zach Randolph (12 pts, 6 reb) Jamaal Magloire (15 pts, 8 reb) and LaMarcus Adridge (13 pts, 6 reb) combined for 40 of Portland's 96 pts scored in this one.

Both Blazer guards Dan Dickau and Martell Webster failed to score for Portland, as both would shoot 0 for 5 from the field.

Reserve guard Fred Jones in the mean time dumped in 12 pts on a perfect 6 of 6 shooting himself for the Blazers.

Forward Darius Miles led the Blazer's (who had 5 players in double digits) in scoring with 16 pts. He also snagged 8 rebounds.

Laker big men Kwame Brown (14 ps, 13 reb) and Lamar Odom (16 pts, 13 reb) both had their woes, as Brown (2 of 7) shot horrible from the free throw line while Odom (35 minutes) struggled to stay on the floor due to foul trouble.

Predictably (providing LA won) scoring guard Kobe Bryant took home the Gatorade Baller of the Game honors with 37 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. He scored 20 of his 37 points in the 2nd half, while registering 3 of his 4 steals in the final quarter of action. However, Bryant failed to log an assist on the game.

    Game Photos:

    Image
The Blazers got an unexpected boost by guard
Fred Jones (#22) when in the line-up. Jones led
several breaks that resulted in fast points for the Blazers,
and finished the night with 12 points on a perfect
6 of 6 shooting from the field, although he did miss
    both of his free throws.

    Image
Lakers Center Kwame Brown (#54) was all over the
glass against the Blazers, including this fierce dunk
off a Bryant miss. Brown racked up 13 rebounds
(4 of them Offensive) 3 blocks and a pair of steals to
go along with his 14 points in the Laker's win.

    Image
Forward Darius Miles (#23) fell a couple of rebounds
short (he had 8) of his first double-double of the year,
but still led all Blazers scorers with 16 points on a
healthy 6 of 8 shooting, and a perfect 4 of 4 from the
charity stripe. Similar to guard Fred Jones were a
majority of Miles baskets scored on fast breaks.

    Roy Returns/Won't Start

    Image
Portland guard Brandon Roy who (a former Huskie
who has played all of 1 game with the Blazers) is
coming off an achilles strain of an injury, could wind
up in the line-up against New Orleans tomorrow night.
November 9th, 2006

Blazers rookie guard Brandon Roy could be back in the Portland line-up as early as tomorrow night, when Portland will host the winless New Orleans Hornets at the Rose Garden Arena.

The talk has many folks and experts around the NBA questioning the Blazer's front office.

Roughly a week ago in the 2nd half of the Blazer's first game of the 2006-07 season, Roy came off the court limping following a lay-up attempt in which he was fouled. Unable to return to the game due to discomfort, Roy sat out and watched the Blazers fall at the hands of the Sonics before an MRI the following morning showed the extent of the injury.

Just a strain of the achilles tendon.

Originally predicted to sit without practicing for as long as a Week, Roy instead began practicing with the team after just 5 days. There is still some discomfort, however. And there still could be more against the Hornet's this Friday Night.

"I think they should let him really rest," one analyst for ESPN suggested, "An achilles strain is pretty serious. There's a possibility that he could injure it further if out there and landing wrong."

Trainer Emanuel Ibanez, who heads the Blazers Medical Staff as well, expressed some negativity with the situation, "It's not a very bright move that he's out there and really exerting himself, but nobody here in Portand can deny that this team needs him right now."

When approached and questioned, Roy was pretty positive on the subject, "I think I'll play," the rookie guard explained, "But not a whole lot. I'm going to slowly work myself back into the line-up. I don't want to rush things, but I am anxious to play."

One thing is for certain amongst the disagreements, differences in opinion and the feelings of the Blazer's rookie guard finally taking the floor again after a four game absence. Fans will definately be excited to see this young energizer baller back in action.

The Blazers will host the Hornets tomorrow night. It'll be Roy's first home game as a Blazer at the Rose Garden Arena. Whether he starts or not he should receive quite the Welcome.

    BLAZER'S GAME 6

    Pre-Game Report

    ImageAT
    Image
When: November 10th @ 8pm
Where: The Rose Garden Arena, Portland, OR
Blazers Record: 0-5
New Orleans Record: 0-5

Inside The Hornets Hive - ImageImageImageImageImage

Team Leaders:

    Scoring: PF David West (22.2)
    Rebounding: PF David West (10.6)
    Assists: PG Chris Paul (5.4)
    Steals: SF Peja Stojavovic (2.20)
    Blocks: C Tyson Chandler (2.20)

The Hornets are a young team that's up and coming, but for now they remain a tangled web of mystery. There is plenty of youth in Chris Paul, David West, Tyson Chandler and Devin Brown (all in the starting line-up) but a lack of experience is what seriously hurts this talented team the most. Paul is solid at the point, and can really push the ball in transition when surrounded by guys such as guards Devin Brown, veteran Bobby Jackson and the high-flying Desmond Mason. On the boards the Hornets are strong with big men such as Tyson Chandler (8.2) David West (10.6) and H.Armstrong. However, it's range that the team lacks, as nearly all starters struggle to hit from three regularly, while guards Jackson, R.Butler and J.Pargo, the team's shooters, just cannot ever get on the court at the same time with a guy like Chris Paul anchoring the one respectfully.

Portland's Priorities - ImageImageImageImageImage

Team Leaders:

    Scoring: PF Zach Randolph (16.6)
    Rebounding: C Jamaal Magloire (8.6)
    Assists: SG Martell Webster (3.8)
    Steals: Dickau/Roy (1.00)
    Blocks: PF Raef LaFrentz (0.40)

Whether the Blazers rebound well, shoot well, or play good Defense in the first three quarters of this game to come, what this team must do is figure out how to close out the contest. The story has been the same the past four games. Play on all fronts has more or less kept games relatively close, but come the fourth quarter things just fall apart repeatedly. The Blazers must make their late game shots, prevent teams from gaining late-game momentum off steals, and somehow snap this losing streak before it stings too deep into this season, and really has some type of an effect 20 games from now. This game is a very win-able game. The Blazers are home against a team that lacks talent.
Look For:

The Blazers to pound the ball underneath in this one. Although Chandler is a presence, he is literally all the Defensive ability that the Hornets possess.

Blazers Hang On For Win #1

    Image
In what turned out to be an interesting shoot out that resulted
in the Blazers first win of the 2006-07 season, rookie Center
LaMarcus Aldridge (pictured dunking) led all Portland scorers
with 26 pts. The game was easily his most dominant performance
this year in a Blazer uniform.

    Image 125
    Image 126

Box Score: (Click here for Full Team/Player Statistics)

    Game Summary:

After a sluggish start (down 5-0) the Blazers quickly made up ground on the heels of guards Fred Jones (5 pts) and Jarrett Jack (4 pts) who combined for 9 of the team's points in the opening quarter. And it seemed as if Portland at one point would take the lead, if not for poor Defensive rebounding that ultimately led to New Orleans 17 1st quarter boards, 7 of them Offensive .. 4 of which came from the fingertips of young Tyson Chandler (6 reb 1st Q). Fouls committed (6) would also send the Hornets to the Free throw line 12 times in the 1st, where scoring leader Peja Stojacovic (5/6 FT) would gain a majority of his team-leading 9 pts scored. (NO 28-25)

Portland would come out running in the beginning of the 2nd period, and finally a pair of Webster free throws with 10:49 still to play in the half gave the Blazers their first lead (31-30) of the night. Playing tough, the Blazers running strong would gain a bit of a lead (2-4 pts mostly) throughout the quarter until a sudden slow down (and lack of stamina all around) would see shooter Peja Stojacovic back on the line and tying the game with 4:01 to go, at 45-45. Minutes later a huge Bobby Jackson three gave the Hornets a 50-49 edge with 2:36 to play. Refusing to go down so easily, a fresher Portland line-up would hit the floor with a minute to play, and led by Martell Webster and Darius Miles, the Blazers would string together a 6-0 run to end the half and take the lead beautifully. By the half sharp-shooting Peja Stojakovic would tally up 22 of his team's 54 points, while guard Fred Jones of Portland would appear on his way to a possible triple double with 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 points scored in just 15 minutes. (POR 57-54)

Despite shooting a staggering 58% from the field in the 1st half, the Blazers of the 2nd half wouldn't look so hot, as guard Martell Webster would miss a trio of wide open jumpers to start what appeared as if it'd be a Portland collapse. Yet the Blazers and Coach McMillan, working with various line-ups, would stay pecking at the Hornet's ankles long after New Orleans pulled away. (to as much as a 9 pt lead) Portland would leave a mess of points at the FT line (connecting on just 4 of 10 on the Q) yet still manage to tie the game (84-84) on an Aldridge dunk with 1:48. Pressuring still, the Blazers would dominate the glass throughout the last 2 minutes, and run off on a 6-0 run of fast breaks before a birthday half-court bank shot by guard Devin Brown of the Hornets would cut Portland's come-from-behind lead a bit heading into the 4th and final quarter. (POR 93-89)

The typical Blazers 4th Quarter give up seemed set to repeat itself as Portland throughout the start of the final quarter would rebound poorly, brick wide open shots and of course fail to get back on Defense in time to stop the Hornets from quickly tying the game back up at 96-96 just minutes in. But something seemed to calm the Blazers down the stretch, whom after the New Orleans attempt to run away with the game (as every other team succeeded in doing at this point) would settle down, slow the pace of the game back down .. and get back to scoring points in the paint enough to trade buckets with the winless Hornets, until finally a Stojakovic bucket with 2:23 to go gave New Orleans their first lead of the quarter at 115-114. Portland swiftly took it back with points from Randolph and Aldridge, and at 120-117 the Hornets (down 3) would come out of a timeout only for the guard Devin Brown to miss a lay-up, yet the Blazers complete disregard for Defensive rebounding bailing them out. Chandler would put the ball back up for 2, and at the other end of the floor Portland guard Dickau and Randolph would literally repeat the Hornets previous sequence of events with a miss and an Offensive put-back to put the home team back up at 122-119 with 1:01 to play in the game. Again, Brown would drive the lane on the much-smaller Fred Jones for a lay-up, only for Portland's Jarrett Jack to find Jones cutting to the hole at the other end of the floor for an energizing dunk to put the Blazers back up by 3. The crowd going wild, Chris Paul's fading jump shot from just inside the three pt line with 30.3 ticks left on the clock would drop, and Portland with a 1 pt lead still .. would sit seconds from perhaps their first victory this year. The inbound pass going to guard Jarrett Jack, the 2nd year specialist out of Georgia Tech would dribble up the floor and float one inside for power forward Zach Randolph to lay-up at 24.7 ticks. Then the Hornets would come, with Stojakovic predictably firing, missing, and forward David West's Offensive put-back falling short .. only for Tyson Chandler's 7th and 8th Offensive rebounds to lead to his 8th and 9th pts on the game (he's miss the first put back, but tip in the 2nd) setting the score at 126-125, Portland still up with 7 ticks in the game. At 5.1 seconds Jack would draw the intentional foul near half-court following a couple of dribbles. And two clangs later .. New Orleans with no time outs remaining would get the ball up to half-court before a 35 footer by guard Chris Paul at the buzzer (from the exact same spot that Brown's 1st half bank-shot fell from) would fall short giving the Blazers there first win of the year. (POR WINS 126-125)

    Reality's of the Game:

The Blazers got absolutely hammered on the rebounds, although the margin only sits at 10+ in the Hornets favor overall. New Orleans however snagged 17 Offensive rebounds to Portland's 6, a majority of which led directly to easy points to keep the Hornets in the game.

Just when it looked as if Blazers forward Zach Randolph stepped his game up in the final quarter of play to define his role as the team's leader (with 24 pts, including 10 in the final Q) rookie Center LaMarcus Aldridge actually looked much better in the paint, where he may of been out-rebounded by Chandler (14 to just 3) but he certainly was not out-scored (Aldridge led Portland with 26, Chandler with just 9) down the stretch. 8 of Aldridge's team high 26 pts came in the 4th to help lift Portland to their first victory of the year.

Hornets guard Chris Paul registered a double double with 19 pts and 10 assists, as well as 4 steals on the game.

Blazer guard Fred Jones continues to look like a real gunner in transition, where in just 26 minutes of time the high-energy guard piled up 13 assists, 9 points .. and he even grabbed 6 rebounds, a figure that ties two other Blazers for the team lead on the game (Randolph, Outlaw).

Devin Brown of New Orleans spent most of the game in foul trouble (26 mins) but still drained 11 of 16 shots, including 4 of 7 from down town to pile up 26 pts on the game.

Portland players Jack (10 pts, 4 assist, 4 reb in 17 mins) Outlaw (7 pts, 6 reb in 14 mins) and reserve Center Przybilla (11 pts, 1 blk in 13 mins) all pleasantly surprised the Portland coaching staff with great support off the bench.

New Orleans guards Bobby Jackson (16 pts, 6/8 FT) and Jason Pargo (2 pts, 1/5 shooting) were polar opposites off the bench for the Hornets.

Starting Blazer's guard Martell Webster (7 pts, 2 assist, 2 steals, 3 turnovers) continues to struggle in rookie Brandon Roy's place, while guard Dan Dickau (0/3 shooting in 22 mins, 4 assist) went his 2nd straight game without hitting a shot.

Forward Peja Stojakovic of the Hornets, despite the loss, still earned the Gatorade Baller of the Game honors due to his 38 pts and 14 rebounds .. both game highs for both teams.

Injured Portland guard Brandon Roy played just 7 minutes, but scored 4 points, dished a pair of assists and grabbed a rebound somehow.

    Game Photos:

    Image
Despite Portland players swarming under the basket on every shot,
Hornets Center Tyson Chandler (pictured with the ball) somehow
grabbed 8 Offensive rebounds to give him 14 on the night along with
    his 9 pts scored.

    Image
Portland forward Zach Randolph was a fearless force throughout the
game for the Blazers in scoring 24 pts on 11 of 16 shooting from
    the paint.

    Image
Despite failing to knock down a three pointer throughout the game
New Orleans Forward Peja Stojakovic led all scorers with 38 pts,
including a 12 of 13 shooting performance from the charity stripe.
Stojakovic also grabbed 14 rebounds for the Hornets, efforts that
earned him player of the game honors despite New Orleans losing.

    BLAZER'S GAME 7

    Pre-Game Report

    ImageAT
    Image
When: November 12th @ 730pm
Where: The Rose Garden Arena, Portland, OR
Blazers Record: 1-5
Dallas Record: 1-4

Maverick's Scouting Report - ImageImageImageImageImage

Team Leaders:

    Scoring: SF Josh Howard (16.6)
    Rebounding: C Erick Dampier (11.2)
    Assists: SG Jason Terry (7.2)
    Steals: SG Jason Terry (2.50)
    Blocks: C Erick Dampier (2.50)

Despite their sloppy record to start out the 2006-07 season the Mavericks are definately a playoff contender this year out of the West. Led by forward Dirk Nowitzki (ppg/reb) the Mavs biggest liability is their shooting. Not a player on the roster outside of the Center position (where heavy rebounders Dampier, Diop and Mbengo are at) lacks range. Even reserve power forward Austin Croshere is a threat from down town. With youngsters such as Josh Howard and Devin Harris speeding things up amidst the starting line-up, and reserves like Jerry Stackhouse and Greg Buckner coming off the bench, this team can go for 125 on any given night if they're hitting. Starting SG Jason Terry may be undersized at the #2 position, but he plays hard at both ends of the floor and can't be slept on. One thing though is that speedy forward Devean George will not dress due to injury (arm) .. something that could hurt Dallas' transition game down the stretch.

Portland's Priorities - ImageImageImageImageImage

Team Leaders:

    Scoring: PF Zach Randolph (17.8)
    Rebounding: C Jamaal Magloire (7.8)
    Assists: SG Fred Jones (3.7)
    Steals: SG Martell Webster (1.00)
    Blocks: C LaMarcus Aldridge (0.50)

The Blazers were killed on the Offensive boards and from the free throw line a game ago, so that'll be there focus in this game to come against the high-scoring Dallas Mavericks. Big men Randolph, Magloire and Aldridge have to stay more focused on cleaning up the Maverick's missed shots if Portland is to have a shot at another win. From the free throw line the team simply lacks consistency all the way around (even Jack was 3 of 8 a game ago). Repetitive hesitation to shoot the ball from the outside has thoroughly made this Trailblazer's team into a force under the hoop where isolated post-up specialists such as Randolph and Aldridge have begun to gain respect in the last few games. However, the Blazers must hit their open shots from the outside if they're to be respected there.
Look For:

The Blazers to take time off the clock and bring the ball up the floor slowly with each possession. Although they were able to (barely) out run New Orleans a game ago, playing Defense like that against the Mavericks will no doubt see the Blazers outscored and spanked if they go at that pace vs Dallas.

The Mavs aren't really playing too well so I think you might be able to come out with the W. Good luck

What do you call a power forward that averages 7 rebounds?
A small forward.

yes! Finally! (I was terrified Paul was going to hit a half-court shot for the game-winner .. especially after Brown hit one at the half lol)

LaMarcus is turning into a beast. I don't think Magloire will be around next year. It's tough getting them both minutes.

The Mavs game is finished .. and man are they playing bad. I will post it in a minute. Somehow my plan to double Dirk all game long actually worked (it didn't against Stojakovic or Garnett lol)

thanks man .. thanks for following.

I was hoping I wouldn't get to 10 losses before I finally beat somebody. Sucks that it came by a point though.

    Blazers Pound Struggling Mavs

    Image
Although he did not start, Blazers rookie guard Brandon
Roy put on a show from the bench with a team-high 25
pts scored in Portland's win over the struggling Dallas
Mavericks, including 20 pts scored in the 1st and 4th
Quarters. It's likely that Roy, somewhere around 100% in
terms of health, will be back in the starting line-up by the
Blazers next game: a re-match with the Kevin Garnett and
the Minnesota T-Wolves this November 14th.

    Image 79
    Image 101

Box Score: (Click here for Full Team/Player Statistics)

    Game Summary:

The Blazer's last of three straight home games, this one against the Mavericks, would definately fail to start in their favor, as Portland in the first 3 minutes of action would clank their first 8 shots before Coach Nate McMillan finally called for a timeout to talk things over .. reluctant to only be down 6-0 at least. Looking to try something different, McMillan would send guards Dan Dickau and Brandon Roy into the game for Jack and Webster, and see instant results with Roy putting Portland on the board with a deep three on his first touch. Several minutes later Roy would make his third basket, giving him 7 of the team's first 11 pts with 5:37 remaining in the Q. Playing aggressively, the Blazers and Roy would shoot just 10 of 29 from the field throughout the quarter, and fail to make it to the free throw line .. leaving the Mavs ahead by 3 despite an 11 pt effort from Portland's rookie shooting guard. (DAL 24-21)

Heading through the first few minutes of the 2nd quarter, things didn't seem poised to change at all as the Mavs held their lead, until abruptly the penetration of guard Jason Terry and the post play of Dampier (11 pts combined through the first 6 minutes of the Q) came to a screeching halt. Down by a few, the Blazers with shooting from guards Fred Jones, Martell Webster and forward Raef LaFrentz sped past to not only take the lead, but string together an 11-0 run at one point .. up by as much as 10 pts with 4 minutes still to play in the half .. the sudden burst of points enough to bring Dallas coach Avery Johnson motioning for time outs twice. The Mavs would succeed in slowing the Portland momentum, but only while struggling as well to hit their shots .. at one point missing 7 consecutively through the remainder of the half. Following a nasty collision of opponents (Josh Howard of Dallas, Martell Webster of Portland) that would send both victims to the sideline to be checked out more thoroughly for injury, both teams would trade baskets before the halftime buzzer sounded. Portland still with a commanding lead, and 14 pts from rookie Brandon Roy. The desperately struggling Mavs led by guard Jason Terry (14 pts) and down almost by double digits. (POR 49-40)

Into the 3rd period the Mavs would lose forward Dirk Nowitzki (who had struggled to this point just to get touches) to foul trouble, and from there the game would thoroughly spiral out of control .. with the shooting of forward Josh Howard (1 of 7) and Jason Terry (2 of 7) to blame. The Blazers in the mean time would rebound effectively (rebounding 13 of a possible 16 missed shots by the Mavs) and continue to work the ball underneath to big men LaFrentz (6 pts) and Aldridge (6 pts) with others getting to the rack in transition. And by the end of the 3rd, the great play of the Blazers will of awarded them with an 18 pt lead heading into the final period .. having scored 26 in the 3rd Q to the Mavs 33 scored in the past 2 Q's. (POR 75-57)

Very little for both teams would change throughout the 4th quarter as the Mavs would struggle to find the basket even with Dirk returned to the floor, and the Blazers seemingly turning the scoring load back over to rookie Brandon Roy (9 pts scored in the 4th). Despite efforts by Terry and Howard (16 of the Mavs final 22 pts combined) the Mavs would fail to so much as chip at the 18 pt lead that Portland built throughout the first three quarters. Down the stretch the Blazers maintained the aggressive rebounding, thoroughly eliminating any 2nd chance shots for the Mavs en route to recording their 2nd win of the 2006-07 season. (POR WINS 101-79)

    Reality's of the Game:

Dallas head coach Avery Johnson told the media after the game that his Mavs played splendid Defense (10 steals, 6 blocks, 32 defensive rebounds and 12 turnovers forced) but it was definately the Offense (33 of 92 from the field, 0 for 10 from trey) that failed in this contest, along with a lack of ball movement.

The Blazers were monsters on the glass, where at least six players registered 5 rebounds or more. Of the staggering 59 shots that the Mavs missed from the field the Blazers rebounded 49. "I knew we had it in us to play like this," Coach Nate McMillan said after the game, "We need to stay aggressive on the boards, eliminate 2nd chance points and we can run with these guys. Any team in the NBA," the coach concluded.

With Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki (3 of 12 FG, 0/2 3pt, 12 reb, 2 blk, 6 pts in 34 mins) denied the ball (by a combination of Randolph and Miles) the entire game and in foul trouble until the very end, the scoring load fell on the shoulders of other Mavericks who simply could not deliver.

Leading the Blazers was rookie guard Brandon Roy, who registered his first serious amount of minutes since injuring a leg a week and a half ago on November 1st. The stud out of Washington dropped in 10 of 26 shots for a team-high 25 points. Roy also dished 5 assists, efforts that earned him the Gatorade Baller of the Game honors.

Mavericks guard Jason Terry dropped in a team-high 26 pts on 12 of 27 shooting from the field. He also snagged 6 rebounds.

Portland forward Zach Randolph recorded a double double with 12 pts and 14 rebs. Most importantly, 5 of his 14 rebounds came on the Offensive side of things.

Despite colliding with Blazers guard Martell Webster at the end of the 2nd half and limping off the court, Mavs forward Josh Howard would return to put up 20 pts by the end of the night, although his shooting (9 of 28 FG, 0 of 7 3pt) seemed less accurate after the return from injury.

Other Blazers scoring in double digits were Center Jamaal Magloire (12 pts, 7 reb) forward Raef LaFrentz (12 pts, 4 reb, blk) and rising star LaMarcus Aldridge (18 pts, 7 reb, 3 assist) who was good for 8 of his 12 shot attempts from the field. Guard Martell Webster (9 pts, 7 assist) and forward Darius Miles (4 pts, 5 assist, 9 reb) also had solid games.

Mavs Center Erick Dampier was the central pillar of the Mavs Defense, en route to logging 4 blocks, 3 steals and 10 rebounds to go along with his 9 pts.

    Game Photos:

    Image
Blazers rookie Center LaMarcus Aldridge (#12) continued to
blossom against the Mavs in scoring 18 pts .. mostly on Dallas
Center Erick Dampier, a Defensive centerpiece of sorts. The
rookie out of Texas also recorded 7 rebounds and a trio of
assists .. all in just 22 minutes of action. "He's hanging with the
big boys," Coach Nate McMillan praised after the game.

    Image
With Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki struggling and sidelined due to
foul trouble, guys such as Mavs guard Jason Terry (#31) tried to
get something going, but to no real effect. Terry did lead the
Mavs with 26 pts scored on a brutal 12 of 27 shooting.

    Image
His name was not at the top of the scoreboard, but he was all over
the court doing everything imaginable, including slamming a put-back
right over forward Dirk Nowitzki in the 3rd quarter that drew a
whistle to send the Dallas stud to the bench until late in the 4th.
Portland Coach Nate McMillan gave Miles (#23) much of the credit
for Nowitzki's game-long hardships while recording 9 rebounds,
5 assists and 4 points as well.

    Roy Back In Starting Line-Up

    Image
Portland guard Brandon Roy dumped in a team high 25
pts against the Mavs last night, and he did it from off the
    Blazers bench in limited time.
November 13th, 2006

After a 25 pt effort in a win over the struggling Dallas Maverick's last night, it's pretty much safe to say that Blazers rookie guard Brandon Roy is back to 100 percent health.

Roy, who suffered a strained achilles during the Blazers opening contest against the Golden State Warriors on November 1st, has since either sat on the sideline in street clothes or played sparingly.

The injury, experts cautioned, could lead to catastrophy if the young rookie guard were to try playing through it. Despite it being a strain, any further injury may of sidelined the stud out of Washington for months. That was a risk that the Portland front office was not prepared to take.

"It felt good," Roy told the media after the Dallas game, where he scored 20 of his 25 pts in the 1st and 4th quarters. "No soreness. Pain. Nothing. I definately feel 100 percent," he concluded.

Coach Nate McMillan was also interviewed and questioned. His answers were similar to Roy's, as well as telling us something along the lines of, "You saw him out there yourself. How do you think he's feeling?"

Roy will replace 2nd year guard Martell Webster, a former highschool-to-pro draft pick from a year ago that visibly struggled on the floor as the Blazer's starter. Through 7 games (6 starts) Webster has averaged just 7.9 ppg on .301% shooting, while dishing 4 apg and grabbing 1.9 rpg.

In just three games of limited action Roy has averaged 14 ppg, 1.3 rpg and 3.3 apg .. all on a much more impressive .474% shooting from the field.

"To say that having him back at 100 percent and in the line-up means nothing to this team is foolish," McMillan told the press following the victory over the Mavs, "He's a good ball player and a big part of this team."
Other Depth Chart News

In other depth chart news, guard/forward Ime Udoko has once again moved from the inactive list to the actual Blazers roster. Udoko did not dress for the first two Blazers games of the year, instead sitting out as the 13th man on what could only be a 12 man game roster. However, with Roy's injury the former free agent became active.

He gradually worked his way into playing time amidst McMillan's complex rotation, and eventually even with Roy's return to the 12 man roster, beat out 3rd Center/Forward Joel Przybilla as Portland's 12th active body.

The move comes surprisingly enough even after Przybilla's 11 pt effort off the bench during the Blazer's first win of the year against Golden State three nights ago.

"They have a lot of guard/forward combinations activated and on the roster right now, and Nate will play all of them," one NBA analyst explained, "It's pretty obvious that he wants to have the ability to run and move the ball hurriedly with all these light weight swingmen."

Through five games Udoko has averaged 4 ppg, 1.8 rpg and 2.0 apg.

    BLAZER'S GAME 8

    Pre-Game Report

    ImageAT
    Image
When: November 14th @ 8pm
Where: The Target Center Arena, Minneapolis, MN
Blazers Record: 2-5
T-Wolves Record: 6-0

Blast From The Past

November 4th @ Portland: The undefeated T-Wolves (2-0) pretty much stormed the Rose Garden Arena and destroyed the poor disoriented Portland Trailblazers (104-93). All NBA Forward Kevin Garnett went off for 29 pts and 21 rebounds, while 2nd year shooter Rashad McCants piled up 31 pts of his own. The Blazers in the mean time left a mess of points at the free throw line in hitting just 6 of 21 attempts .. an aspect of the contest that maybe just an average performance could of turned this beat down around.

A Look at the T-Wolves - ImageImageImageImageImage

Team Leaders:

    Scoring: PF Kevin Garnett (22.2)
    Rebounding: PF Kevin Garnett (13.7)
    Assists: SG Randy Foye (4.7)
    Steals: PF Kevin Garnett (1.83)
    Blocks: PF Kevin Garnett (2.00)

The T-Wolves are playing some pretty good basketball right now, and it has everything to do with the team revolving around KG. Guards McCants, Foye and Davis will get there shots. It's up to the Blazers perimeter defenders to stay aggressive, which is where Jaric and McCants did the most damage the last time these two teams met -- Portland's perimeter Defense was not the least bit aggressive. At any rate KG must be double-teamed regularly, and big men Mark Blount, Mark Madsen and Eddie Griffin bodied up regularly. Portland should have a hard enough time keeping KG off the Offensive glass without others crashing and getting easy put backs.

Portland's Priorities - ImageImageImageImageImage

Team Leaders:

    Scoring: PF Zach Randolph (17.0)
    Rebounding: C Jamaal Magloire (7.7)
    Assists: SG Martell Webster (4.0)
    Steals: SG Martell Webster (0.86)
    Blocks: Aldridge/LaFrentz (0.43)

The return of guard Brandon Roy gives the Blazers a potential go-to guy in tough situations. Roy proved a game ago that he could handle pressure, upon entering the contest against the Mavs after a 3 minute scoreless start by his team, only to bury a deep three fearlessly to get the Blazers on the board and kick-started. It's likely that his role (as well as to put points on the board as often as possible) will remain the same against Minnesota, who saw him in street clothes when last these two teams met. In the mean time, the big men of the Blazers (Aldridge, Randolph, LaFrentz, Magloire) have got to stay extra-aggressive on the Defensive glass in this one, considering who's lurking under the basket and all. Feeding these guys on Offense in the paint should also be a priority, as they are knowledgable enough to know when to kick out to a teammate for an open look.
Look For:

The Blazers slashers to really go at KG in his one, in hopes of getting him in early foul trouble -- something that worked wonders against the Mavs (Nowitzki) two nights ago.

Yeah .. he's probably one of the most athletic players at 6'9" in the game not named T-Mac, LeBron James and so forth. He definately has his uses.

I tend to stick him on the top shooter on the other team by the 2nd Q, and though he gets lit up .. the stat sheet does not lie. Some of these guys are bricking 15-20 times en route to their 30 pts.

Providing we clean up those missed shots, it's a success regardless of what they score.

He's our Ben Wallace of sorts. Mostly under the radar, no where to be found on the scoring sheet, but definately involved in the game.

Rta

We'll need a surplus of that against the T-Wolves. They're undefeated and at home. lol

Blazers Win 3rd Over Undefeated T-Wolves

    Image
In his first significant amount of action since a Game 1 injury that
left him sidelined for up to a Week, Blazers guard Brandon Roy
lit up the stat sheet for Portland with a 30 pt, 9 assist and 7 rebound
effort in the Blazers victory over one of the last of two undefeated
teams in the West, the Minnesota Timberwolves.

    Image 107
    Image 99

Box Score: (Click here for Full Team/Player Statistics)

    Game Summary:

Predictably the Blazers (forecasted to struggle in Minnesota) would come out clanging away in the 1st quarter, at one point missing as many as 8 shots consecutively while the high-powered T-Wolves Offense pulled away at a leisurely pace. But then with 4 minutes to play in the period, a Garnett block attempt on a Brandon Roy lay-up would draw the All NBA stud forward's 2nd whistle of the game, and with his departure would the T-Wolves scoring suddenly slow down. Still the sharp shooting of guards Jaric and Foye (8 pts combined) along with the penetration of forward Ricky Davis (5 of 9 FGs for 11 pts) gave the T-Wolves a lead down the stretch .. up by as much as 10 pts (29-19) before the Blazers with 54 ticks left in the quarter would wrap up strong, with a 4-0 run. (MIN 29-23)

Down by 6 heading into the 2nd quarter, the Blazers would remain persistent, and rebound well as the T-Wolves continued to struggle with Garnett off the floor. Shooters Foye, Jaric and Davis would look to shoulder the scoring load, but the Blazers instead would force some crucial turnovers leading to a bit of a comeback, until finally a Brandon Roy lay-up with 7:39 to play in the half brought the game to a tie (37-37). Over 120 seconds later, following a Jaric three and an Aldridge lay-up, a deep Dickau three for the Blazers would give them their first official lead of the game (42-40) with Minnesota's Garnett watching from the sidelines. The half still with a good 5 minutes to play, a run would be an understatement to describe the Blazers finale, as they'd go on to out-score the T-Wolves 12-4 .. led by hot-handed Brandon Roy (17 pts, 5 reb, 7 assist at the half) whose 7th field goal of the half would count with 0.9 left on the clock. For the T-Wolves forward Ricky Davis (13 pts) and guard Marco Jaric (11 pts) would sit as Minnesota's top producers after two quarters of play. (POR 54-44)

Very little would stand out about the 3rd quarter, as both teams would simply trade baskets throughout the bulk of the minutes, with the T-Wolves at one point pulling to within 5 of the Blazers, before Portland would re-take the momentum and escape back up to a comfortable 8-10 pt lead. Both teams would shoot below 50% from the field, with the Blazers converting on 7 of 8 free throw attempts, and rookie guard Brandon Roy pouring in 9 more pts (26 pts in 36 minutes). Minnesota in the mean time with the presence of Garnett on the court (8 pts, 5 reb in the Q) put up a pedestrian 23 pts in the 3rd .. still down by 10+ by it's end. (POR 79-67)

Coasting through the first few minutes of the 4th quarter, with the Blazers finally sitting rookie Brandon Roy after 36 straight minutes, Portland would seem in control of the game and en route to their third straight victory before a sudden barrage of turnovers and sloppy shooting would result in a swarm of points in the other direction. Led by Ricky Davis, whose 3 pt conversion (lay-up and FT made) followed by a monster pair of threes to narrow the Blazers lead to just 2 (88-86) with 5:05 still to play, the T-Wolves would battle back into the game and show all intentions of making this one a game for the home crowd to remember. Less than 2 minutes later more sloppy play out of the Blazers (a missed lay-up by Roy, then a pass thrown out of bounds) and buckets to capitalize by Minnesota (Garnett, Foye) suddenly tied the game up with 3:15 to go. Playing hard, the T-Wolves would struggle over the course of the next two minutes while the Blazers would simply run .. before a pair of Brandon Roy free throws (fouled in transition) would fall to give Portland a stout 100-94 lead with 58.3 still to play. Then a steal off the T-Wolves in bound to follow would lead to a D-Miles lay-up with 50.6 left. After numerous T-Wolves fouls, and plenty of efficiency at the free throw line for the Blazers, Portland would sit up by 8 before Darius Miles off the final inbound would dribble out the last 7 ticks of the clock for the team's 3rd consecutive win. (POR WINS 107-99)

    Reality's of the Game:

In foul trouble most of the game, All NBA forward Kevin Garnett of the T-Wolves still managed to register 20 pts, 10 rebs, 2 steals and the T-Wolves only 2 blocks of the game in 36 minutes. But it was Garnett's first exit of the floor after his 2nd foul in the 1st quarter that ultimately led to the Blazers capturing the lead and running with it.

Blazer rookie guard Brandon Roy scored 17 pts in the first quarter on 7 of 16 shooting, before wrapping up the game in the 2nd half with 13 more pts on a 4 of 16 performance. However it was free throws down the stretch (8 of 10 on the game, 4 of 4 in the final 3 minutes) that gave the Blazers an edge on the T-Wolves to halt their comeback attempt. Roy also missed out on his first double double of his short NBA career in registering 9 assists, as well as 7 rebounds and 3 steals. He led Portland in pts, assists and steals for the game, efforts that earned him Gatorade's Baller of the Game honors for the second consecutive game.

Forward Ricky Davis of the T-Wolves, who only scored 10 pts the first time these two teams clashed, dumped in a game-high 31 this time around on a pretty effective 14 of 30 shooting (just under 50%). In fact it was 9 pts by Davis scored in a matter of minutes that eventually led to the T-Wolves come back down the stretch.

Portland forward Darius Miles seemed on pace to record a triple double at one point as he'd finish the contest with 15 pts, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Miles was second on the team in scoring (behind Roy with 30 pts) and tied for the team high in rebounds with rookie LaMarcus Aldridge (who also grabbed 9 rebs).

T-Wolves guards Randy Foye and Marko Jaric both scored 14 and 15 pts respectfully, as the two would combine for 29 on 11 of 28 shooting. The two also combined for 13 of the T-Wolves 26 assists.

Rookie Center LaMarcus Aldridge of the Blazers missed recording a double double (10 pts, 9 reb) but came away with both of Portland's two blocked shots in the game, something that the Coaching Staff has been itching to see out of Aldridge.

Point guard Mike James of the T-Wolves scored only 7 pts in 23 minutes due to foul trouble, but he'd still log 9 assists and a pair of steals.

Blazer big men Zach Randolph (14 pts, 7 reb, a steal) and Jamaal Magloire (10 pts, 5 reb, 2 steals) both had solid games. The two also combined for 4 Offensive rebounds.

After struggling the past three games to put points on the board, Blazer guard Dan Dickau came up big against the T-Wolves with a trio of three pointers and 9 pts on 3 of 4 shooting .. all from down town.

T-Wolves scoring forward Ricky Davis (#31) flew over the Blazers at
one point en route to recording his game high 31 pts on a solid 14 of 30
shooting. Although he struggled from beyond the arc (2 of 6) Davis
made up for it down the stretch as both of his threes came in the midst of
a T-Wolves run to tie the game from down 10+ pts.

    Image
Forward Darius Miles (#21) of the Blazers may of been Portland's
2nd in command against the T-Wolves (behind Roy) in scoring 15 pts,
along with logging 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Miles did plenty of
slashing and dishing throughout the contest, while staying aggressive
    on the glass as well.

    Image
He was in foul trouble for a majority of the 1st half, but his presence
was felt throughout the 2nd where he'd score 12 of his 20 pts while
grabbing 10 rebounds. Garnett (#21) also stole the ball twice from
the Blazers and blocked inside shots twice.
